Wonderful house for a family

We had a wonderful week in this house. The house is big and comfortable. Lots of rooms to just hang out as a family. The back deck is huge and the sun room is nice if you get a wet day. The house is very private and close to the beach.

Good Location. OK House.

Rented this house with another couple and their 16 year old daughter so there were 5 of us. The house can sleep 9 or 10 but I think that would be pushing it with only 2 bathrooms, 1 of which is on the first floor where there aren't any bedrooms. The queen beds weren't very comfortable and were very creaky.

I will say that the house has great potential in that it looks to be older and have "good bones" but it isn't really well maintained. The ad was truthful in that it is 800 feet to the private Bay Beach which was Ok to visit and take a walk on but not something we wanted to stay on for the day. Nice Ocean Beaches were a quick drive away but you need to get to them early or else no parking.

It felt homey enough but is definitely dated which is a shame because it could be so much nicer with a little TLC. It smelled musty when we arrived even though there had been a renter just prior to us. Lots of Febreze and scented candles helped. The kitchen wasn't all that well stocked if you plan on cooking. Basic tools like a set of tongs for pasta or salad were missing. I tried cooking scrambled eggs for the 5 of us but the biggest pan I found wasn't nearly big enough to accommodate a dozen eggs. The coffee maker brewed an OK cup of coffee but the heating element barely worked so unless you drank the coffee immediately after brewing it got cold quickly. We never used the Weber Grill because it didn't look that appealing either. The washer looks new and the dryer worked fine if you like to do laundry which is always nice to be able to do. The WiFi signal was strong which was a plus for us unless you want to totally disconnect from the world. Cell service for AT&T was spotty but that was all throughout Cape Cod.

The outside shower was deemed "scary" by our group and no one used it which is a shame too since that was a big draw for us. I love the outside shower concept but this house isn't one I would have ever used. There were lots of random things like boats and bathtubs in the backyard and under the deck which took away from whatever quaintness the house once had a long time ago. This house has such potential to be homey and quaint and antique, but it isn't nearly there due to lack of proper caretaking. The Central AC worked pretty well but we didn't really need it that much due to cooler temps at night during our week. The sliding glass door to the back porch/greenhouse doesn't lock. We had to insert a broom handle for security to block it from opening. I spoke to the owner about it, who lives next door and he said he hadn't gotten around to fixing it yet. He also said he never locks the house anyway. It must be ingrained for those of us from the NY/NJ area to always lock our houses before leaving.

The owner seems like a nice enough guy and might have been open to addressing some of these issues but that isn't what you want to be dealing with when you're on a one week vacation. We also had two small adult dogs with us so that was nice of the owner to allow us to bring them. There was a slight up charge for the privilege but nothing crazy. The fact that we had pets with us probably seriously limited our house selection so this might have been the best of what we had to choose from when we booked in June. Compare that to our friends who rented a house in Wellfleet for the same amount of money, and their house looked like something out of a Beach & Home magazine. The kitchen was huge, gourmet and well stocked. The rooms were beautiful and clean, airy and light, exactly what a beach house should look like. Ours was very dark and musty. Their house only slept 5 but had 3 full bathrooms. We had major house envy. The ad for our house was technically accurate enough but it certainly wasn't what any of us expected. We were all disappointed and that was before we saw our friends' house in Wellfleet. Now it's up to those reading this review to decide if this house is

Owner Response:

This home in 2014 winter was interior painted, woodwork restrained, 2 new Anderson windows installed in the 14foot by 26foot living room. The glass slider (with the lock that works but is missing a screw) opens onto a glassed in deck with two locking doors to the outside. In taking to the tenant in the driveway of the home, I did state that the doors on the deck locked and my doors are not locked, thinking to inform him the we are in a safe area, The kitchen in 2014 received a new glass top ranger, SS dishwasher, and a full two door refrigerator. The kitchen is stocked with dishes, flatware, and pans for 20 visitors and renters. We even stock paper towels, napkins and extras. The home has two full bathrooms, one on the first floor (I would not want to run up stairs to use the restroom, or not have the option of giving baths to children upstairs while the rest of the family living is downstairs.). The other full bath is upstairs, located near the four bedrooms. The queen size beds are 2 year old pillow top beds, and the creaky bed must be the new protective queen bed covers.

The yard is big for walking dogs, I spent some time cleaning the lawn of dog dropping. The boat is in the yard next door and the new bath tub, that is covered under the deck is to be used in the winter of 2015. We rent to pet owners and a fee of $100 is charged per dog, in this case two dogs showed and no extra charge was given to us. Our outdoor shower is rustic ( has two sections) made from red mahogany and decorated with lobster pots with a glass top (we find it Cape Cod-ish and not to this tenant's liking. This home is a colonial home with dark woodwork, crosswood doors, the interior is painted white, with lots of windows. We do not think it is dark in this home, but we think that if this tenant's modern standards are not met with our home, then he needs not to rent a home sight unseen. (We invite any renter to come and check our home and area before renting.)

Wonderful House, Wonderul Location!!!

My boyfriend and I loved this house! This house has so much to offer. It is so warm and cozy, while at the same time being very spacious. Every room in the house is large, giving all guests enough space. The furniture is comfortable and it truly feels like a home away from home. The back deck and sunroom are wonderful! I would exercise on the back deck almost daily and also loved lying in the sunroom catching some rays. In addition to the house being comfortable, the location is perfect! The house is set in a very private location, with a good size yard. There are mature trees and lots of nice bushes/plants. You are also very close to some yummy restaurants, markets, gas stations, bakeries, and also the ocean side beaches! One of the best things about the location of this home is that you are only a two minute walk to the beautiful bayside! I woke up early every morning to take a walk along the beach at low tide. At high tide you feel like you are on the ocean side, and the sunsets at night are so amazing!

I loved this house, loved the location and the surrounding area! I cannot wait to go back again and would highly recommend this for a getaway! It is peaceful, relaxing, beautiful and provides total rejuvenation!

Best vacation

I was not sure, after reading the other reviews, what to expect but I can tell you we love this house! The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen has full size modern appliances and the living room has plenty of room for entertaining. The large deck overlooking the well maintained yard is perfect for parents and children. The owner provided beach chairs, beach umbrellas and boogie boards. It was great not to have to find room in the car for them. After a fun day at the beach it was wonderful to come home to a house with A/C. This house has all the comforts of home and just a short walk to the beach! show more show less

Excellent Rental

We have been renting from Dennis for many, many years. This home is spacious and sleeps many people very comfortably. The house is on a quiet dirt road within walking distance to a beautiful bay beach. It is also very close to town by car. The house has a very large kitchen and all that you will need for a wonderful vacation. Dennis is always accommodating and will try and get you anything you need to make your stay more comfortable. Anyone who rents this house will truly enjoy a classic Cape Cod vacation and really enjoy themselves. Perfect for families. show more show less

Another Great Week in the Yellow House

My family has been staying in this house since around 1985. The kids have grown up spending a week here in the summers. We love this house, and have wonderful memories. Some of the kids now have kids of their own, and are so happy to be able to bring them to the same "Cape Cod house" they spent so many happy weeks in growing up. The house was clean, had brand new living room furniture, and some rooms were freshly painted. The owner has always been very attentive and accommodating. This trip, the TV wasn't working before we got there, so he brought a flat screen TV and DVR from his home for us. The house is older and has some antique pieces. My family finds that part of the charm. We've been staying here for almost 30 years now, and my family doesn't want to discuss staying anywhere else. This is our home away from home. We look forward to our next stay, as always. show more show less

Old, Dirty, Overgrown & Smelled!

Don't trust the pictures of this house!!! What you don't see is the overgrown lawn and shrubs (so overgrown we never went out to play on it). We've rented 5 times on the Cape and this was by far the worst place of all. There are old junked cars and boats in the back for your view from the old splintered deck. Underneath the deck is also filled with all kinds of junk. There was a huge hole dug out for some type of water drainage issue that was just left there with shovels. The actual house must have been beautiful at some point when someone was taking care of it (a long time ago!) We arrived to find a coffee maker with mold growing in it, a toaster so old and dirty we wouldn't use it, a grill outside with dirty utensils on it (we wouldn't use that either) and broken glass on the lawn. The homeowner lives across the road and could easily do what's necessary to clean this up but when you speak to him he starts talking more about family health issues and everything but the house. I think he's got it down to a science, you're there with kids and dogs and already paid so what can you do? He seems nice and makes you feel bad for him so you don't complain. He even mentioned in my conversation that he needs to get in there and do some projects like painting and fixing the broken tiles etc. While my husband was speaking to him he mentioned needing to mow the lawn (it was over 12 inches high!) There's a list on the side of the frig of things he expects you to clean saying this is a housekeeping rental! I don't see that anywhere on this listing or in my contract. There were cob webs in every corner and over the lamp shades (I had to clean some of them because I couldn't sit there and stare at them). The walls were so dirty around the bunk beds my daughter wouldn't sleep there (and she was really excited about the bunk beds). Old bathrooms with broken tiles and mold issues, kitchen and bathroom counters with the trim ripped off, oh and a washing machine right next to a puddle on the floor with some sort of drain issue so if you can stand the smell down there you can do laundry. Basically choosing this house ruined our vacation for this year. We spent more on this house than ever before expecting a clean beautiful house with a nice yard. We brought volleyball and can jam (a frisbee game) we never set up and spent so much more than ever before eating out because we usually grill a few nights and the grill and outdoor furniture was so dirty we couldn't bring ourselves to use them. I also need to mention how uncomfortable the beds and couches are, they must be more than 20 years old, if you look under the couch there's actually a brick holding it up! My husband saw exposed wiring in the basement and none of the smoke detectors worked (an accident waiting to happen). We were so fed up we left a day early to get home to relax because we couldn't relax there! show more show less

Owner Response:

The old car was on a neighbor's lot and has been removed. The brick under the sofa was because the renters the week before broke one of the legs. The tall grass was from working on the broken water discharge from the Geo air conditioning system, but we kept the home fully air conditioned (the rest of the 1/2 acre yard was mowed.) (The water furnace company worked on the problem for two days). The wire was in the utility room and was not plugged in. The grill was clean and new utensils were in a drawer in the kitchen. Some renters would like to get all their funds back and never complain to you until they their week is over, like eating a meal and then wanting to skip out on the check.show moreshow less

Great family spot

This was a great place for our family for 4 adults and 4 kids. We loved it and would be back in a heartbeat. The owner is very friendly and right next door if you need anything, which you won't. Some things other reviewers won't tell you - the hot water is abundant and the water pressure good, no problem for a big group. The bathrooms are small, shower bath combo small vanity and toilet. If you want to spend hours in a spa like bathroom then this is not the place for you. The place is fairly kid friendly bear in mind there are stairs and a bunk bed. The baby crib is a bit dated so you probably will feel better to bring your own pac n play. The deck is high and you will have to keep an eye on toddlers and crawlers. The kitchen is very well equipped. Tons of plates, cookware, utensils. The can opener is wall mounted. This is a very safe place for kids out in the yard as it is set back from the street and it is a dead end. But there are a few junker trucks, overgrown vegetation and other yard junk so again supervise little ones. There are plenty of beach chairs, body boards, umbrellas etc. The beach varies greatly with the tide from non existent at high tide to way out at low. Nauset and Coast Guard beaches are an easy bike ride away (I say bike ride because parking for cars is a pain). Internet connection is good -- we had no problems with it. show more show less
