Description

SEALIGHT: A great beach house, a classic cottage located along the beach road between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. It is within walking distance of Oak Bluffs center, steps from Inkwell Beach, and a minute from the bike path start at Farm Pond.

The house is elevated over a front yard which is hedged by beach roses and pines, and equipped with chairs. There are sweeping, boat-filled Sound views by day over Cape Cod and Chappaquiddick Island from the yard, porch, and dining/sitting areas. An ocean sunrise over the horizon gives a great start to the day.

Almost all the rooms have stunning views. You enter an interior porch whose windows can be opened wide enough to make it feel like a screened porch facing the ocean. Off the interior porch is the grill deck with work table and several chairs for the cook's helpers... facing the Sound. Beyond the glass slider is the open floor plan dining/living room. There is a very large round white dining table for 6.

A cabinet provides table linens and a box of flatware. The kitchen is off the dining room, with a wide five foot opening to it so that it doesn't feel closed off.

It is an open floor plan to the living room, with a pillar. The feel of the first floor dining and living area is open with an L shape.
The living room has several long couches and four wicker club chairs. The TV is a flat screen with HD and Blu-ray DVD.
French doors leading to the outside porch is off the living room. The porch is as comfortable as a living room, and guests like to spend evening hours there, maybe enjoying the moon coming up over the water.

A deck or balcony is part of each bedroom, and from each of the beds it is possible to only view Nantucket Sound, without a building in view! The lightness and brightness of the views give a great sense of well-being. The primary bedroom has water views on 3 sides through large windows and a glass door which goes to the deck overlooking Farm Pond, an osprey nest and 6 miles of the coastal curvature of State Beach. This bedroom has the original marble sink.. The 'children's suite,' which has a double bed and a pair of twins, counted as 2 bedrooms, views a lighthouse in the distance over Chappaquiddick through the glass slider that goes to its deck overlooking the Sound. The other double-bedded room has a sink and medicine cabinet as well as its own charming Victorian balcony overlooking the Sound, a perfect place for an afternoon of reading.

Beach swimming is diagonally opposite the house. One mile up the road begins State Beach which is popular for families: wide, life guarded, and 6 miles long with gentle waves. 8 miles from house is the ocean surf beach at Katama, the only public OCEAN SURF BEACH, and is reachable by connecting bike paths starting a few seconds from the house! Guests always mention the convenient location of the home (in-town and a great town for children & shopping, including lots of new upscale shops in town and new fine-dining.) The marina, with it's restaurants, pubs and outdoor areas dog-friendly, is an interesting and fun place to be. The marina hosts ocean-going yachts as well as party fishing boats and charter boats.

The furniture is primarily white wood cottage-style in the bedrooms with a period iron bed, a brass bed, and a pair of wooden beds. LL Bean in feel, with several sinks in bedrooms. In the living room, there is furniture and art from around the world. (Extensive Haitian collection of original oil paintings & steel sculpture by recognized artists.) There are two large sofas, 4 wicker chairs and satellite TV. The house is comfortable and interesting, consistently maintained by the same owner for many years. Much was redesigned in winter '06-'07 & fall creating an almost widescreen view of the Sound on the first floor & enlarged living room with new beadboard throughout.
Bring your own or have sheets & towels delivered to house through local linen service? This is a well-loved, year round home.

Internet connection is high-speed and wifi.

Beautiful views from every room!

Three generations enjoyed the serene porches, special decks and quiet spaces of this wonderful sea view home. The good size, well laid out kitchen lent itself to wonderful meals looking out at the harbor. Perfectly located -- the 10 minute walk to town became a twice a day ritual. Very relaxing. A memorable vacation!!

We have stayed in this wonderful house for a week in the summer since 2006. We have had nothing but a wonderful experience in this perfect house. The location is perfect, close to town and the bike path. The view of the ocean from the front porch and several of the bedrooms is spectacular! The house is large with plenty of room. An added feature is a nice front yard where the kids can play. The landlady is wonderful and can be easily reached if any issues arise. Overall, a great place to stay on Marthas' Vineyard!!!. show more show less

Just a small note with a big thank you for a wonderful stay in your home. Even the raging storm was an adventure! We are considering making the Vineyard part of our summer plans for the future. Thanks again.

rating 5 out of 5 JUST RETURNED FROM A WONDERFUL WEEK IN JULY review submitted July 15 2009 The location could not be better...we enjoyed walking to town for coffee each morning, nightly strolls and incredible views from almost every window. We live on the water year round so it takes alot to get us excited but this home did it. Owner was quick to return security deposit and home was exactly as represented. More room than we needed and while we didn't do much cooking...the kitchen is well equipped for a large family. One issue we had was the week went by too quickly! We also had the good fortune of being there over the 4th of July and saw fireworks all along the coast of Cape Cod from one of the many decks! show more show less

What is special about this property?
The house is located within the historic Copeland district, which is the nation's FIRST planned community. It was done brilliantly, with curved streets going around parks.

My house has porches, a balcony, and now decks, so one can enjoy nature and people without ever having to leave the house. It is just a ten minute walk through these interesting streets to 'downtown.'
