Description

Charming summer home on Oyster Pond sleeps 9, boating, fishing, very private.
Sitting directly on Oyster Pond with a view of Vineyard Sound, tucked away on a private wooded peninsula, this 1930's summer home radiates charm and comfort with its own dock, two rowboats (with sails), a large canoe, and a kayak. Oyster Pond (actually a half-mile-wide deep water lake) is ideal for swimming and fishing. The water is warmer than the nearby ocean, and many a kid has caught his or her first fish from the dock.

The lake and yard are filled with wildlife from hummingbirds to turtles, osprey, swans, ducks, geese, gulls, cormorants, and heron. The lake-side living room windows swing up to the porch ceiling, opening the house wide to the sea breeze. For cool evenings enjoy a roaring fire in the huge fieldstone fireplace -- we supply firewood.

There are four bedrooms: three off the living room, one with full bed and private bath, the second with full bed and single bunk, the third with two twins. A breezeway from the screened porch leads to the master bedroom (queen bed) with a luxury private bath and large windows overlooking the lake. A daybed in the screened porch accommodates one more person.

The kitchen, with its huge wall-sized window, looks directly onto the lake. The house is equipped with a gas grill and WiFi.

The three full bathrooms include one bathtub and two showers, and a private outdoor hot shower has a view of the lake and Vineyard Sound.

The home is located midway between Woods Hole and Falmouth, and is adjacent to conservation land, including woods trails through Zinn Memorial Park and Spohr Gardens. Minutes away is the stunning Shining Sea Bikeway, running along the shore between the towns. A fifteen minute walk (or row) takes you to ocean beaches. Woods Hole, a world renowned center for marine science, is a seven minute drive or 20 minute bike ride. The town also has the ferry terminal to Martha's Vineyard. Falmouth is a larger town with shops, restaurants, and theaters.

The house was first built as a hunting cabin in the middle of undeveloped woods, consisting of just a few rooms and the large stone fireplace. Additions over the years have added modern conveniences, but the essential old-time charm has been retained. The interior is still the original knotty-pine bead-board, and the rooms are full of nooks and crannies. Being the last house on a dead end road provides complete privacy -- the most common sounds are birds and the occasional bullfrog. The half-mile swim across the lake is a great challenge for anyone who is up for it.

The main place to hang out and eat meals is the large screened porch, just a few feet from lake's edge. The house is about eight feet above the water (up a steep slope covered with low bushes, roses, and ferns). Heading out the porch door towards the dock takes you to a natural stone patio area, with a small table and comfortable chairs. The dock itself is perfect for sunbathing or stargazing.

The lake is excellent for swimming. The middle of the lake is very deep, so people who may want to get beyond the bits of seaweed may swim off the rowboats. The water gets quite warm by mid to late summer -- above 80 F -- and in June and September it is still comfortable.

My family and my sister's family recently spent a long July 4th weekend at this rustic cottage. Located at the end of a quiet street on the way to Woods Hole, we enjoyed stunning views of Oyster Pond and Vineyard Sound beyond. The kids could fish and swim off the small dock and there were several boats to take out onto the water. It was only a 15 minute walk to Quisset Beach. The cottage has been lovingly maintained by its original owners and is perfect in all kinds of New England weather - beachy with a big screen porch and plenty of breeze and cozy in the rustic living room with a big stone fireplace. Two bedrooms have their own bathroom - great for two families or two couples. One master bedroom is new with a queen bed (the rest are twins or doubles) and is attached to the house by a small breezeway. There is a third bathroom in between two bedrooms for kids. Fantastic view from the outdoor shower. We will be back! show more show less

Our family stayed for a week in mid June 2017 and loved the place! The location is perfect - very private, serene, beautiful. We walked and biked to the ocean but also swam and kayaked in Oyster Pond. The new master bedroom addition is awesome -- you see nothing but the lake while laying in bed and the shower is quite nice. The rest of the house is dated and small but this is part of its charm. We sat in the big screened-in porch at night and played card games. NOTE: This home is very close to Woods Hole and the ferry to Martha's Vineyard where we spent one day. Since there's no parking at the ferry, we dropped everyone at the ferry and then the driver drove back to the house to leave the car and biked to the ferry using one of the bikes that the owners have at the house. The owners were very nice and responsive the one time we had an issue. We would definitely return again. show more show less

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for two weeks at the end of July and into August. Our children joined us for the second week. The listing description was very accurate and the property is clean and well maintained. The cottage is very special! It is right on Oyster Pond and I found myself very often watching and listening to the Ospreys and geese and turtles and other birds going about their business of soaring and fishing and foraging. In fact, it was difficult not to constantly stare at the Pond there is so much interesting stuff happening! I didn't get a chance to take a boat out but there are several to choose from. My son took the kayak out and really enjoyed himself. We all loved the outdoor shower, the convenient trail through the woods that gets you to Fells Road and right near the Bike trail on Surf Drive running towards Woods Hole or in the opposite direction towards Falmouth for 10 miles. Of course swimming off of surf drive or in the Pond is a must! We also really enjoyed the Woods Hole Film Festival, Ben and Bill's ice cream in Falmouth, Pie in the Sky (popovers!), Jimmy's ice cream in Woods Hole, the Glass Onion restaurant (not cheap but delicious!), Quicks Hole, and the new Water Street Kitchen in Woods Hole, and much more! We highly recommend the cottage! It is magical! And the location can't be beat! show more show less

My husband and I had our most relaxing vacation ever at the Davis cottage. Despite the fact that I had to work much of the time, I was doing so sitting on the screened porch, looking over the water, with birds chirping in my ears. The peace of the house and property were only interrupted by occasional bike rides, swims, kayak explorations, and dog walks.

We'd never been to woods hole or Falmouth before, and while we missed the ocean beaches at the national seashore, we completely enjoyed exploring the beaches, winding lanes, and downtown areas of this part of the cape.

The Davis cottage is very well stocked with anything we could possibly have needed to make our stay pleasant. Having gas burners on the stove was a wonderful treat for me (as every other rental we've had has electric). And it was a joy not to have to find and pack sheets and towels! The Davis family was generous with their time and help in getting us acclimated to both the house and the area. We hope to be back in the near future!

We took our three boys - aged 10 to 17 - to the lake house on the spur of the moment for Labor Day weekend. Their thoughts on being unplugged for a long weekend from all electronics with slow wifi and no TV were fairly uncomplimentary. But from the moment we arrived we felt like we had stepped through a portal into a different (and better) time.

The cabin is beautiful, peaceful and full of quirks and charm. The owners were terrifically kind and helpful with the rental of what is clearly a cherished family home. The rickety dock and rowing boats became a focal point for our 10 year old, who braved the beautiful cool water for several hours a day. The screen porch was an idyllic place to sit and read. We watched hummingbirds feeding and saw chipmunks flitting in the shrubs. There were fish in the very peaceful lake. Woods Hole and Falmouth are right next door with the bike path at the end of the road.

We loved the house so much we will be back I hope very soon. If you want a lake house with all mod cons, widescreen TVs, and a jet ski on the dock this is emphatically not for you. If you want something much much better this is a magical experience.

This really is a great opportunity for a great relaxing vacation. The pictures of the house don’t do it justice, there is a lot of living space in such a homey cottage. The fire place is an amazing touch and the landlord made sure there was plenty of wood to burn. Though the weather was not hot enough there were plenty of life jackets and games he left for us to utilize. There was at least a little of everything in the house: alumni foil, pots n pans, plates, cups. Great location, just a short drive to the local restaurants and stores made everything much easier. Landlord was very responsive and even had the place cleaned before and after. It really was a perfect experience and I thank them for opening their house to my family and friends. show more show less

My wife and I spent a perfect autumn week at this retreat on Oyster Pond. We rode bikes along the shining sea bike path which is practically connected to the property. We strolled through the gorgeous Spohr Gardens which are next door. We rode to both Falmouth and Woods Hole which the house is right in between. The house itself emanates the love and joy that have been experienced here through generations. Beautiful wood walls and rafters surround you as you sit before the stone fireplace. Swans glide over the shimmering water of Oyster Pond which is itself a protected oasis from the glorious Atlantic beyond. If you are looking for a modern house humming with electronics and hermetically sealed "convenience" look elsewhere. If you have been dreaming of a place to heal your soul and relax in the rustic comforts of a simpler time, congratulations you have found nirvana. Welcome home. I could go into specific amenities but the kind and considerate owners can tell you all that. (If you are lucky enough to stay here.) show more show less
