Onset is a charming little Victorian village tucked just off Route 6 between Wareham and Buzzard’s Bay. It’s lovely little central square sits beside what might be the most picturesque harbor in all of Cape Cod. It boasts a long, sandy beach, lovely little park, several inns, restaurants, and shops, and of course the not-to-be missed Nana’s Candy and Ice Cream Shop.
That’s the village. Now for the cottage, which is about a mile’s walk or drive from town. You’ll find it tucked away in a quiet corner along one of those winding roads “that seem to beckon you,” just like the song. The cottage itself is COMFORT defined. The first floor boasts a lovely, beautifully appointed master suite with a large full bathroom. A laundry room is adjacent. You can also walk out to a little covered patio off the master suite. Upstairs, you’ll find a large, open, air-conditioned great room, also beautifully appointed, with comfortable furniture for dining, watching TV, or relaxing with a good book in a comfortable reading corner. The kitchen has everything you could possibly want to accommodate meal preparations. Also on this floor is a charmingly decorated twin bedroom and the cottage’s main bathroom. From the living area you can walk out to a large deck that offers plenty of comfortable, cushioned seating and a large round dining table. You may find yourself spending most of your cottage time out there! Morning coffee on the deck provided us with morning sunshine, a symphony of bird song and even an occasional turkey sighting. We saw an entire family: Mom, Dad, seven chicks, and even some aunts and uncles.
One of the best things about this place is its easy access to many beautiful beaches. Shell Point Beach, just past the village center, is our favorite. The Cape itself is also “right there!” You are five minutes from the Bourne Bridge and about twenty minutes from Falmouth. We spent many days exploring the Cape during our stay, but we always felt that returning to “our” cottage at night felt like coming home.
