We just returned from an amazing family vacation at Mary’s new cottage. This home is everything you could possibly want and need in a vacation home. First, the location is perfect! I personally prefer to stay up-island when visiting Martha’s Vineyard for the access to Lucy Vincent Beach, the short drive to Menemsha or Aquinnah to watch the sunset and fresh seafood, landbank hiking trails located minutes from the cottage great for dog walking and morning runs, easy 5 minute drive (no traffic like Edgartown) to up-island Cronigs for groceries, and Chilmark store for sandwiches, pizza, specialty items. My husband likes to cycle and the up-island routes to Aquinnah and especially North Road and Middle Road are perfect! Additionally, close trips to the farmer’s market, artisan festival, Alley’s general store, field gallery, and we love the West Tisbury Library with the children’s programs that they offer. Also, to venture to other towns we found that from this location we can get to Oak Bluffs or Edgartown in 20 minutes or less and an Uber ride from Oak Bluffs was $26.
The pictures Mary has of her home are great but we found they don’t really do it justice. We are a family of three and rented the cottage with my brother and sister-in law. Old Farm Road is a quiet, dirt road, and Mary’s cottage is set far from the road in a private setting. I was really surprised how large the beautiful green lawn was. There are also many trees that provided shade, and my daughter spent a lot of time running and playing in the yard. The bedrooms are on separate ends of the house so for two families we really felt that we had two private sleeping spaces. We stayed in the room with two twin beds which Mary set up and converted into a king before our arrival. With a small child this setup was perfect as the bathroom with the tub is practically connected (although we mostly used the beautiful outdoor shower). The master suite is spacious with a vaulted ceiling, and both bedrooms have two large closets and their own air conditioning control! The large open common living/ dining space is much larger and open than the pictures convey. The lighting Mary chose for the home is beautiful, and the copper pendants provide such a warm glow in the evening.
The kitchen is large and well equipped, Bosch appliances, Calphalon cookware, new gas grill on the deck, there is everything you need to prepare family dinners. However, most of our time was spent on the beautiful screened-in porch. The sun comes up on that side of the home and it was the perfect place to enjoy our morning coffee and reading, and the shade in the afternoon made it ideal for our after-beach libations!
Some other amenities that we appreciated: ample size mudroom for all of our beach gear, a smart TV to connect to our Netflix account, Sonos speakers, loft area for reading and where my daughter spent lots of time playing so her toys/ doing puzzles were kept separate from the living space, and a new Electrolux washer and dryer.
However most importantly, Mary is a caring person who really wants to provide her guests with the best! You will not be disappointed renting her cottage, she also considers dogs because she truly wants her guests to be able to enjoy their family time on the island especially if that includes a four-legged furry member!
