A group of friends rented this supposed luxury house through real estate agency Metes and Bounds, and it was not acceptable in many ways. First, the agent told us to pick up the key, both in writing and via phone, at their office, said there would be someone to help us and give us info in Island, etc. So we walked around Edgartown looking for address we were given, only to eventually learn from another agency that company's office had closed shop months earlier. One of many "misleading" statements.
House is not 1/2 mile from beach as we were told but 2 1/2 miles and not walking distance to diner or Edgartown or shuttle. We told the agent our friend is very sensitive to mold, yet when we finally got into house mold was so bad we had to open all windows. Still, mold smell lingered. House not cleaned for us! Screens to sliding doors to deck broken, one we found on deck, toilet broken, no cushions for outdoor old wooden deck furniture nor lounge as promised, so we had to use couch pillows, beach chairs rusty and broken and unusable, grill too dirty to use, etc. And reason listing didn't show all bedrooms. Mine had broken window -- no screens, no instructions for heat/ac and no heat so had to sleep in sweatshirt as if back in camp, broken really cheap curtain which didn't work, dead bugs, very dusty, furniture from flea market if that, picture on wall of map was faded and broken glass, and mold smell so bad couldn't use small closet. One of my friends found blood on her mattress.
After complaints, agent finally left beach chairs,, screens repaired and plumber arrived. Should have happened before we got there! I contacted agent twice to see if we could have late check-out as late boat, never heard back. So we had to leave at 10am and make sure all clean -- hard as house had no broom! Required to empty dishwasher -- even clean ones. Charged $350 for cleaning but owner limits to sanitary areas. All told, lots of negotiating to get what had been explicitly promised, lots of aggravation, and no way to spend an almost week-long vacation. I've rented on MV some half dozen times, and never had a problem. A first, and broker and owner responsible for problems. We paid a lot for this experience. show more show less
This is a clear cut example of you cannot please everyone...This house has been rented seasonally for the past two years, and this is the first complaint . It is a 5 bedroom home which rents for $8000 in season. Tenants required their own rooms. It was never represented as a luxury home, although some may consider it as such. A very up scale newer home in this location and of this size would rent for a minimum of $15,000. They clearly indicated an unwillingness to go above what they paid .Again, no one has ever complained about this house at this price in two years, including the people who came in directly after them.
As far as the key pick up, Metes and Bounds R E. has moved their office, and these tenants were sent directions by the owner that they should go directly to the house, and were given the code to the lock box. This saves them an extra stop. This is a far more acceptable method to every tenant that is provided this. Also I might mention that their payments were way beyond the dates required by the lease. But we were lenient.
No one ever falsely represents the actual distance to South Beach; the shortest route is slightly over 2 miles, and that is exactly what they were told, when asked if it is walkable. I do not consider that a walk, although some do.
No tenant has ever complained about mold, and ultimately they stayed the full week., which would have been impossible if there was such an allergic reaction.. I detected nothing of the sort when I went to the house.
One screen door was off the track; and I fixed it. I also bought beach chairs to them as they were complaining about the rust in the ones that were there.
A cleaning crew goes in after every tenant, so they are not responsible other than the usual damage clause. We try to see to it that everyone enjoys their vacation and go out of our way to be accurate in our descriptions of all rental properties.show moreshow less
