Description

''Glamping'' on Lake Tashmoo - enjoy the taste of old Vineyard summers! We call it glamping, by which we mean glamourous camping. The structure itself is an incredible, exposed stud and rafter structure, and rustic would be an appropriate description of the space. However, there are many amenities not found on a typical camp site, such as washer/dryer, high quality sheets, wireless internet, full kitchen with coffee maker, dishwasher and more. There is no TV.

The Lodge is an old school ''camp'' built in 1922 as the main lodge of a girls' camp called Camp Tashmoo. The main part of the building is roughly 33' x 33', a mostly open space with partitions at the dressing room and the kitchen. There is a 12' wide sleeping porch that runs the length of the building. In the main area there is a hanging couch/hammock, a couch and chair area, a dining area, another puzzle/crafts area and the kitchen and various built in benches. The sleeping porch is located off the dressing room down a few stairs from the main level, and contains a queen sized bed and two twin beds in one area, and then an additional two twin beds behind a partition to allow for visual privacy but not acoustical privacy (the wall goes to a normal height but not all the way up to the sloped ceiling).

The Lodge is located on the shore of Lake Tashmoo, and there is a small beach located a short walk through the salt marsh in front of the house. This is a good beach for little kids (shallow water) and a fine place to tie up a canoe or sunfish. The Lodge faces west, and countless sunsets have been captured by our family over the past 92 years. Herring Creek Road is a sand road that has two way traffic with one lane, so care and time is needed to navigate through the woods. Two public beaches are located down Herring Creek Road and Vineyard Haven is about 1.5 miles from the Lodge.

Great Views with Pests

My husband and I, along with our two children, stayed at this unique home just a short week ago. The views were amazing, and the sunset was priceless. The home on the surface was clean (one my mother would describe as, take out the talk and leave the whisper type of clean). The sofa and hammock cushions and covers were not clean. I was happy I decided to bring our own bed linens because the linens provided by the owners (especially the blankets) were laden with pet hair. Two of the twin mattress covers had yellow stains on them. The worst parts of it all were the presence of small, tan roaches seen in the kitchen, living room, and in the dressing room/closet area. In a addition, but certainly not the least, was the presence of mice. I was truly hoping I was imagining mice feces on the kitchen counter tops and stove in the mornings when we entered the kitchen to make coffee. However, this was the worst reality, only to be further confirmed by the sight of two mice running from under the toaster oven when we returned from dinner one night. To the mice defense, the only light that were on was a light in the bathroom, so the mice probably thought it was their time to roam. I contemplated reaching out to the homeowners regarding the overrun of pests, but I decided not to because an email exchange from earlier in our stage from Will, one of the owners, suggested to me his response would've been more of his passive aggressiveness that came across in his earlier exchange, and I did not want to further ruin our trip with callousness from the owner.

Owner Response:

Thalia, I am sorry that you were so unhappy. We do describe the house as rustic, exposed stud and rafter, old style camp. This isn't a house in the sense of a structure that is sealed up against the natural world. Unfortunately, this means that we do have various insects come in along with occasional mice, despite our best efforts to keep them away. We feel strongly about allowing renters to bring their pets with them on vacation, but obviously we need to address the pet hair left behind. Thanks for letting us know about that. We are working on a solution that will combine deeper/extended cleanings after pets visit along with fabric that is easier to clean.

It seems that you were most upset about the idea of cockroaches in the Lodge, but those insects are not house cockroaches. Here is information from the Barnstable County Agricultural Extension Service that I have recently found about those insects:

"Strangely, the bug that draws the most attention and complaints is one of the most innocent insects on Cape Cod. It does not bite or sting. It does not damage property like a termite, or clothing like a wool moth. It is not interested in human food and does not carry any diseases or contaminants. It lives outdoors, especially in woods or garden areas. There are two ways this bug gets into a cottage. First, it might ride in on laundry from the clothesline, or in veggies or flowers from a garden. Second, it slides in under loosely fitting screens at open windows or doors that are backlit by lights inside the cottage at night. They are attracted to light and they fly short distances, although they prefer to skitter. They resemble an immature cockroach quite closely when they are not moving, being tan and flat with wings that appear to be shell-like when closed. They are NOT cockroaches (German roaches) and, in fact, have more in common with moths than their distant German cousin. The chances of their hitch-hiking home with someone are pretty slim, and they would not survive the trip or multiply. In fact, coming into the cottage is essentially suicidal; they cannot live in that setting. There is no chemical method of removing (exterminating) wood roaches because of their outdoor habitat. The best defense is to tighten openings around window and door screens and to move lights, if possible, away from the immediate window or door area. A vacuum cleaner is also pretty effective, but possibly self-defeating. The old adage, 'Where there's one, there's more' is not true indoors for these outdoor bugs, and you could be chasing shadows all week instead of enjoying the sun."

An amazing spot on Tashmoo

This is among the most unique properties for a vacation: a rustic lodge from another time; but with key amenities of modern life...all set by the water. The description of the property captures the space well: it's an old lodge from the 1920's with beautiful beams and rafters and a big open space with different sections perfect for game playing, puzzles, visiting, and quiet reading, all in the same, shared space.

There's a nice modern kitchen, open to the rest of the space -- with views of the water beyond;as well as a washer/dryer, and a nice outdoor shower. The sleeping arrangements are informal -- a big sleeping porch with a queen bed and two twins, and a partitioned area with two more twins. The location is incredible. You are surrounded by trees in the quiet seclusion of Lake Tashmoo on an unpaved road. But, you are only a quick drive or bike ride to the hustle and bustle of main street of Vineyard Haven. The local owners, Will and Susie, are responsive and helpful to anything you need. And at the end of each day, you can sit on the deck and watch the glorious sunset, and your vacation can start all over again! show more show less
