The gallery began in 1990 as a showcase for artist Michael Vienneau's scrimshaw, carvings and artwork. Mr. Vienneau has been working as a professional Scrimshander since 1974 and his artwork is in the finest tradition of the ancient art of scrimshaw. Michael uses antique whale’s teeth and whale bone from pre-1972 stockpiles(observing the Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1972) but also employs a wide use of fossil ivories which can be from 100 to 30,000 years old. A selection of artwork from other fine regional artists who work in scrimshaw is also available at the gallery. hide
