About Explore Lighthouses and Life Saving Along Cape Cod In This Talk & Book-Signing...Join Coast Guard historian and nautical antiques dealer James W. Claflin foran illustrated talk & book-signing, based on his new book about the brave men and women who served to warn and rescue mariners in distress along the treacherous coast of Cape Cod. Co-sponsored by the Library and the Harwich Historical Society, Claflin’s talk will examine how Cape Cod’s shifting coastline challenged mariners so much that they petitioned for a lighthouse as shipping increased toward the end of the 18th century. The first lighthouse in Truro was joined by more lights and rescue stations as the need increased. Lightship stations were also established to mark the constantly changing sandbars submerged off shore, more than any other spot along the US coastline. “Lighthouses and Life Saving Along Cape Cod,” is the fourth in a series and is published by Acadia. . Program is part of Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce’s annual Maritime Days
