2014 Fall Weekend on Nantucket

Island Hockey Beach Break with Friends - by Shannon R.

June 2014 - Some hockey friends and I arrived via HyLine ferry from Hyannis on a sunny, mid-October morning. Nantucket town was quiet with hardly a soul about, which was wonderful, because we looked rather peculiar navigating the cobblestone streets and sidewalks while attempting to keep our massive, rolling hockey bags in an upright position. The private home we stayed in near Dionis beach was perfect for our party, with five bedrooms in the main house and a large carriage house bedroom that slept 3 with a shower in the bathroom and laundry. The widow's walk afforded breathtaking 360 degree views of the area and the ocean in the distance. Though we had two trucks for use during our stay, we used the bicycles at the house and traveled many of the trails. The island was just how I imagined it would be - wild and windy, with non-stop treasure hunting opportunities. We shelled on the beaches, shopped in the stores, visited the lighthouse, and gazed at an awesome mix of arts and crafts made by both historic and modern hands. The weather was chilly, but the sun was shining all weekend long and the company of dear friends and some good hockey kept our souls toasty warm. We had the roads, bike paths and beaches practically to ourselves and, walking through town and shopping, it was difficult to imagine the island in the throws of summer with people everywhere. Perhaps someday I will experience a summer on Nantucket, but for now, I will treasure the quiet memories of time spent with special people, on this special island.
