Paddler’s Guide: Exploring the Santuit River & Beyond
Your stay offers a rare "triple-threat" paddling experience: a calm river, a tranquil bay, and access to the open ocean.

1. The Santuit River Route (The Scenic Serenity)
Direction: From your private dock, head North (Left).

Experience: This is a peaceful, winding journey through protected marshlands. It’s the best spot for morning birdwatching—keep an eye out for Osprey, Great Blue Herons, and Egrets.

Pro Tip: This route is very sheltered from the wind, making it perfect for a leisurely paddle even on breezy days.

2. The "Merge" to the Ocean (The Adventure)
Direction: From the dock, head South (Right) through Shoestring Bay.

Experience: As you move south, Shoestring Bay merges with the Santuit River and opens into Popponesset Bay. Follow the shoreline further to reach the Popponesset Spit, a beautiful barrier beach where the bay finally meets the Vineyard Sound (Atlantic Ocean).

Duration: About a 45–60 minute paddle to reach the "Spit" where you can pull your kayak up and enjoy the sandy dunes.

3. Essential Tips for Your Trip
Check the Tides: The "merge" area can have a noticeable current. For the easiest trip, head out toward the ocean an hour before high tide and let the incoming tide "push" you back home toward the dock.

Sandbars: At low tide, beautiful sandbars appear in the bay—perfect for a mid-paddle break, but be mindful of your kayak drifting!

Safety First: Life jackets (provided) are required by law. Please be mindful of the occasional boat traffic as you enter the wider parts of the bay. read more show less
