Description

Short walk to Woods Hole Village, Stoney Beach, Park Street beach, MBL, WHOI, ferries, and bus terminals.

This cozy cottage is of all wood construction and has a living/dining room, kitchen, bath, and two spacious bedrooms with queen sized beds. The original cottage was built in 1931 by our grandfather, an MBL scientiest, but was destroyed in 1954 by hurricane Carol. It was quickly rebuilt from a Sears Roebuck kit!

Our other house that is just adjacent to the south, survived Carol's surge which had 3' of seawater above the first floor. The greatest loss was our grandmother's grand piano and the many books in the library. The hurricane Hugo surge in 1989 came within 8 inches of the first floor but we were ready and had nailed open the front and back doors to minimize damange. This lets the seawater roll through without lifting the structure.

The cottage is a few feet higher than the bigger house so no water was near the first floor. However, the cottage foundation is minimal and the ocean found a weak spot and undercut the foundation which allowed the seawater to pour into the crawl space. Some electrical cables were ruined but damage was otherwise minimal. The hole under the foundation was only recently repaired.

The living/dining room has an unobstructed view of the ocean (Buzzard's Bay). The west bedroom, sunroom, and front porch also have great views of the ocean. The kitchen and east bedroom have views of the marsh that surrounds both houses.

The kitchen has all wood countertops and is fully equipped, including a dishwasher. Both bedrooms have queen size beds.

Other amenities include a front loading washer, dryer, Roku TV, propane BBQ grill, and cable internet. If desired, guests may login to our temperature reporting system which monitors the living room, the crawl space, and the outdoors.

An interior security camera is available for the exclusive use of our guests. It is an ARLO plug-in, Essential Series indoor camera, 2nd generation, that easily connects to your smart phone. It has geo-fencing which automatically arms the camera when you leave the premises. It will push a notification to your phone if it detects movement or sound. It can also babysit a pet!

The cottage has a fireplace but is currently non-working. Use of candles in the cottage is prohibited because of the fire hazard, but battery ones are allowed, lending to a romantic ambiance.

My brother and I are the 3rd generation descendants of Jacob M. Johlin, an MBL scientist. He is the one who built the homes on Gardiner Road which the family still occupies when they are not rented. I (Hadley) have summered here my entire life, usually 3 weeks during July when our (6) children were not in school. As a member of the Woods Hole Yacht Club with a mooring and sailboat in Great Harbor, sailing in the area has been a great love of mine.

What is special about this property?
The most notable feature of this property is its proximity to, and view of, the ocean (Buzzards Bay). There are only a few areas of the east coast that face due west - and can enjoy sunsets over the ocean. This is one of them. Two public beaches are an easy walk. The Park Street Beach has no lifeguard and can be used as a convenient landing for paddle-boards, kayaks, and other small boats. If swimmers like privacy, this is the place as there is NO PARKING anywhere near the beach so ONLY nearby residents are able to easily enjoy it.

This property includes one of the largest marshes in the area. As a biologist (once upon a time), yours truly turned his attention to restoring the marsh about 15 years ago from an invasive and aggressive variety of the common reed, Phragmites. It was accidentally released in the region a few decades ago and quickly became a monoculture that excludes all other plants and animals, particularly birds. Visitors that drive through Woods Hole along Gardiner Road will notice native plants in our marsh that are not often seen including: Marsh Hay or Saltmeadow Cordgrass, Saltmarsh Cordgrass, Marsh Fleabane, Narrow-leaved cattail, Broadleaf Cattail, Salicornia (pickleweed), Annual Sea-blite, Pointed Broom Sedge, and Marshmallows.

Another feature of this property's location is that the MBL Swope Cafe is just a 5 minute walk away. The Cafe is open to the public M-F for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It features a la carte and a full buffet.

What is special about your town?
Woods Hole is most noted for its scientific institutions, the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. However, the most unique geographic aspect of the Village is its confluence with two major bodies of ocean - Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay - and the Elizabeth Islands. The islands are privately owned and undeveloped except for a community at the east end of Naushon Island. The islands are largely the same in every way since at least WWII. The island trustees have generously allowed access to some of the most magical harbors in the region - Tarpaulin Cove, Kettle Cove, West Beach, and Bull Island in Hadley Harbor. The dozen islands in the vicinity of Woods Hole and the very strong tidal flows in the Hole make it one of the most interesting areas to sail on the east coast.
