Description

This fully equipped Hathaway cottage was purchased by my great grandmother in 1931 for herself and her family to enjoy summers. Her two daughters and their families picnicked at the beaches and sailed the Vineyard Sound summers. The cottage transferred to John Hathaway, the 3rd generation, in the 1960's and has been enjoyed by his four children, the 4th generation, to this day. The house has now been handed over to the 4th generation and its use off season continues with the inclusion of the 5th generation of children.

The Hathaway family has tried hard to keep the cottage at its best and upgraded the kitchen, beds, and bathrooms over the last 25 years. We love sharing the cottage with those who will find the warmth and ease of use of the cottage inviting. Our family cottage is within walking distance (10 minutes) of everything in Oak Bluffs (including library, Circuit Ave, harbor and Tabernacle Campgrounds) and to New York Ave where you can pick up one of the buses that travels around the island. The house is comfortable and feels like you are home. The outdoor shower is one of the best around with a private changing stall attached. Beach chairs and umbrella are provided for your convenience.

This two-story, four bedroom, 2½ bath, 1870’s American-farmhouse style home is located in the Vineyard Highlands above Sunset Lake and Oak Bluffs Harbor in a quiet neighborhood. The fully-equipped house works very well for two families to share a vacation. The house sleeps 8 people maximum and has an outdoor shower. It has a Victorian ambiance with modern kitchen, baths, and amenities with a wonderful wrap-around porch for rocking while reading your favorite book on a lazy summer afternoon. It provides limited water views, a quiet neighborhood, No pets or smoking allowed. The front porch is ideal for candlelight dining and you will love rocking on the front porch and having dinner and game time at the large dining table in the dining room. Many of our guests remark the most about these two areas and have returned each summer for many years building their own family memories.

Our family cottage is within walking distance (10 minutes) of everything in Oak Bluffs (including library, Circuit Ave, harbor and Tabernacle Campgrounds) and to New York Ave where you can pick up one of the buses that travels around the island. Safety factors include closable child-guard gates at the top of each stairway and each low second floor window has child-guard grates. Each floor is equipped with smoke alarms, CO alarms, and fire extinguishers. There is no air conditioning. Ceiling fans are in all four bedrooms, in the living room and TV room. Emergency flashlights that activate when the power goes out are on the first and second floors.

Great House! Great Location!

We had a wonderful time staying at this beautiful cottage! The house was spacious, exceptionally clean, and very well maintained. The lovely front porch made was the perfect place to enjoy coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. With 2 bedrooms at the back of the house and 2 in the front of the house, this home is perfect for 2 small families to enjoy time together. We especially liked the close proximity to Oak Bluffs, just a short walk away. Also, Deb was a pleasure to work with. We have stayed many places on the Vineyard, but this is by far our favorite!

Wonderful Home

We have been renting this house for several years. It is the most beautiful quaint home, well stocked with everything you need. Very clean. Close to everything. The hosts are amazing and easy to reach. I would recommend this home if you are looking for the true Martha's Vineyard house filled with history and charm.

My family has owned this Victorian cottage since 1932 and it has been enjoyed in the summer ever since by 5 generations. Many happy summer memories were created in this house. I have been coming to the vineyard summers since I was 3 weeks old, which makes it about 70 or so years. My great grandmother passed it to my grandmother who passed it to my father (who stills enjoys the cottage and Vineyard at 94) and now to his children. We love this cottage as much as many of our renters do, so the love and care we all give to it shows. We have left some furniture from my great grandmother to maintain the Victorian cottage feel but also have updated many pieces and rooms. It has always been just a summer cottage that originally was two houses moved and put together back in the late 1800s. Apparently, that was very common before electricity lines were put up in Oak Bluffs.

What is special about this property?
Our cottage is very inviting and easy to live in, especially for two families with children since it sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms with two full bathrooms upstairs and a half bath and outdoor shower downstairs. We have a partial view of the ocean from the front porch and upstairs front bedroom. You can sit on the porch, which is the highlight of the cottage, and watch the ferries come into and out of Oak Bluffs harbor. We are also a 5 minute walk to the town library and about a 10 min walk to the harbor, Our Market grocery and package store on the Harbor, the Flying Horses, Oak Bluffs ferry terminal, and downtown. Sunset Lake is at the bottom of the hill from the cottage. We have updated the beds and and furniture in the cottage over the years and provide umbrellas and beach chairs so you will find that you only need to bring your own linens and food. Our yearly updates are loved by our renters (so they keep telling us) and keep families coming back year after year. We have rented this cottage every year since the early 1970s and have several return renters, some who have returned each summer from 6-25 years at a time. We are in a quiet neighborhood with year round and seasonal owners present. There is a bus that runs down Chestnut Ave at the end of our street that comes from the airport and is traveling to Edgartown. You could flag it down to catch a ride if you needed to.

What is special about your town?
One of the biggest assets to our cottage is location. We are within walking distance to everything Oak Bluffs offers. Oak Bluffs is the home of the famous Tabernacle and campground with the colorful gingerbread cottages; an active harbor with ferry boats from Woods Hole, Falmouth, Hyannis and New Bedford, MA, and RI, arriving in the summer months; the Flying Horses Carousel, where you catch rings for the gold one and a free ride on the oldest running merry go round in the country; bars and restaurants within walking distance; a beautiful park along the shoreline at Ocean Park; shops along Circuit Ave (the main street); and two town beaches. The bus system on the Vineyard is top notch and goes everywhere on the island so travel between towns and up island to the Gay Head Cliffs can be done without a car. The bike path to Edgartown starts in Oak Bluffs, so bicycles are easy to rent down by the harbor.
