Relax and refresh in this quiet, homey mid-modern home in the heart of East Chop.

Located a half-block from the scenic East Chop Bluffs, and short walk down the cliff-top road to East Chop lighthouse, with its distinctive green lantern. Take a short walk or bike ride to Oak Bluffs Jetty Beach, or go another half-mile to quaint Oak Bluffs. Sip your coffee on the building-length porch as the sun rises. Look out on a large private yard and trees everywhere you look on this large lot. Dine inside or under the stars on the uncovered half of the expansive deck after rinsing off the salt in the private outdoor shower (with hot water).

The deck, which the family calls the ''summer living room,'' has comfortable seating under cover of the upstairs deck and a nice table for outdoor dining. A gas grill and outdoor shower complete the deck. The open plan on the first floor features a living room with cable TV and brick fireplace on one side, a half-bath off the hallway, and a kitchen-dining room-sitting area on the other. Gas stove/oven, large quiet dishwasher, and microwave will make you happy to eat in. All the family games will make you want to clear the table quickly after dinner.

Upstairs, four bedrooms a large bathroom, with shower stall and double sinks, sleep seven comfortably. The master bedroom has a comfortable king that looks out sliding glass doors onto its own deck. Across the hall is a queen bed, by family consensus the most comfortable bed many have slept on. The bedroom next door has two comfortable twin beds, and across the hall is a twin.

There is good wi-fi and good cell phone reception with most carriers. There is ample outdoor parking and a garage to store your bikes, beach chairs, and water toys. There is a full-size washer and dryer, and more games. Horseshoes? A clothesline in the back of the house is there for your wet beach towels and suits.

If you're looking for a fancy house with AC and a large-screen TV in every room, East Chop offers a lot of other properties to choose from. If you want to enjoy a quiet family home, where the ceiling fans keep you cool as you listen to the bell buoy at night, this is the place for you. read more show less

    great house in east chop

    We stayed at this mid-century modern house in early August, at the height of the tourist season, and it offered a serene, green and peaceful retreat close to all the busy fun in Oak Bluffs. Located a block from the East Chop drive, now closed to cars but a great place to walk, the house was an easy amble past the tennis club to a small pleasant beach by the harbor. The owner was a delight to work with , answered all of our questions promptly and accommodated our unusual scheduling needs so we could participate in a special event at the Tabernacle. The house was well-equipped with everything required for a great visit to the Vineyard: we found what we needed to cook clams, bake zucchini bread, and enjoy preparing other Island produce. Our group appreciated the availability of washer and dryer in the basement and eventually figured out the high-end dishwasher. We spent a lot of time on the shaded and well-lit covered porch ---a great place to relax and catch up on summer reading and even some writing,. Each couple had a pleasant, 2nd floor bedroom with comfortable sleeping and plenty of storage space. The two other bedrooms, one with bunk beds, seem like they would be fun for young ones, The downstairs is well furnished with comfortable older chairs and couches. There is plenty of good lighting and numerous places to plug in electronics and the older electrical system takes a little bit of getting used to. We also enjoyed the al fresco dining spot, the efficient gas grill, and a really great outdoors shower. The house has many family photos and other interesting things on the walls: all of this made us all feel like this was a well-loved home with great family history that felt familiar and nostalgic. Over the years we have stayed in a variety of Vineyard summer houses: unlike many this house has adequate ventilation and very little of the moldy feeling some rentals get. If you like the energy and diversity of Oak Bluffs but also want space, quiet and comfort, this house would be a great choice. show more show less

    Very much appreciate the suggestions. We can definitely post specific operating instructions in more useful places. Point well-taken on the lighting in particular. I agree with the reviewer opinion of Jetty Beach, and we can list others, including the ones you mention. Our current favorite close beach is on the other side of the Oak Bluffs Harbor channel. Better swimming, fewer people.

    Family mid-modern summer cottage built in the late 1960s, now managed by the three siblings who grew up spending summers there.

    What is special about this property?
    Nothing antiseptic about this house, filled with family warmth. Huge deck, half covered half open-air, becomes the center of social gravity. Big yard on large tree-covered lot creates a pleasantly private space in this pretty residential area of East Chop.

    What is special about your town?
    East Chop is the scenic residential section near Oak Bluffs, with its cliff-top drive and iconic lighthouse. The beach is walking distance and so is the quaint town center. You'll see more pedestrians and bicycles than cars around the house.
