One of my favorite summer traditions on Cape Cod is a night at the Wellfleet Drive-In. I’ve been going for years — my family makes a point of going at least once every summer — and it never gets old. There’s something about watching a movie under the stars on a warm Cape Cod night that you simply can’t replicate anywhere else.
The Wellfleet Drive-In has been creating Cape Cod memories since 1957 — it’s the only drive-in on the Cape and one of roughly 300 left in the entire country. According to their website, the very first movie ever screened here was Desk Set, starring Katharine Hepburn. Since then, classics like Ben Hur, Jaws, Star Wars and ET have all lit up that iconic 100-by-44-foot screen. The original 1957 speaker boxes still stand on their poles — a detail I love every time I pull in.
Before the Movie
Get there early — there’s plenty to do before the show starts. The old playground sits right next to the snack bar inside the premises, and my kids have always loved it — the creaky swings and squeaky merry-go-round are wonderfully, perfectly vintage. If you have little ones, this is half the fun.
Feeling adventurous? Head outside the gates to the mini golf course, open since 1961 with only minor alterations over the years. Play a round and feel yourself transported back in time — it’s charmingly retro in the best possible way. Just ask a staff member for a re-admittance pass on your way out so you can get back in without any fuss. Same goes for the Wellfleet Dairy Bar — also just outside the gates — where soft serve, hard packed ice cream, hand-mixed shakes, Razzles, and sundaes made your way are waiting. Get something cold before you settle in. You deserve it.

A Bucket List Cape Cod Experience
Cape Cod thing this summer, make it a night at the Wellfleet Drive-In. Pop the hatch, pull out the beach chairs, grab some popcorn, and watch a movie under the stars with the smell of the ocean in the air. It’s nostalgic, it’s genuinely fun, and it’s the kind of Cape Cod memory that sticks with you long after summer ends.
Don’t be the person who puts it off every year and kicks themselves for missing it. Go.
