Description

Description

Before there were radios or televisions, before there were automobiles or airplanes, before there were railroads, when horses and wind-propelled boats provided transportation, this farmhouse stood on this spot of earth where people lived well in their home place on a blueberry farm. This house will draw you close to the spirit of the earliest European settlers in the new world, who set lasting patterns for generations to come.

When you drive across the Cape Cod Canal, anticipation begins to build as you look forward to the things for which Cape Cod is renowned: the low, piercing keow, keow, keow of the seagulls swooping above the beaches in search of food, moss hanging from the knotty, craggy pine trees emerging out of the sand, children digging for hermit crabs on the beach or scouring the beach for conch shells with parents and grandparents, a ship's captain swiveling on a weather vane atop a white Cape Cod garage, looking out to sea with his spyglass. Cape Cod is legendary for its fried clams and lobsters. You can ride bikes on the Cape Cod Rail Trail, attend Cape Cod baseball league games or the Cape Cod Theatre Company/ Harwich Junior Theatre just a few steps down the road from the house.

Entering the house you will feel the gentle support of wide-planked pine floors. On either side as you enter you will step into a comfortable sitting room where you can read or visit with your family and friends. A fire place is the focal center of each room. To the left you will find the kitchen with its vintage Glenwood gas range and stove dating back to 1929. A simple, open air storage area in the kitchen displays the pots, pans and dishes you will use to cook your meals.

Next to the kitchen and one of the sitting rooms is a lovely dining room with a table and 6 chairs. There is a fireplace in this room so you can enjoy your meals on cool mornings and nights with a fire in the fireplace. Moving beyond the kitchen into the sunroom you'll find another table where others can dine or where you can play scrabble, munch on popcorn or join in card games, table games and other fun activities in the evening. There is a television in this room as well as the router for the internet. There are both indoor and outdoor games.

Moving in the opposite direction from the kitchen you enter the second sitting room which is ideal for quiet reflection and reading, with several reading lamps and a lounge chair. If you didn't bring a book to read, take a look at one of the great books you'll find on the bookshelf.

Leaving this sitting room you will find two first-floor bedrooms, each with its own wash room, bathtub and shower. There is a washer and a dryer in the bathroom of the master bedroom .

Climb the steep, narrow, Captain's Stairs up to the second floor where there are three more bedrooms with classic sloping Cape Cod ceilings. One spacious room has a king size bed. Another has a single twin bed and the third has two twin beds and dresser drawers build into the wall. There are two bathrooms upstairs.

In the back yard you will find a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs. There is a picnic table and a gas grill. It's a wonderful place to cook hotdogs, hamburgers and baked beans for a 4th of July cookout or just to enjoy the quiet of a summer evening.

When you arrive home after a day at the beach, of which there are several quite close by, you can jump into the outdoor shower to rinse the sand and salt from your body before walking into the house and your bedroom by way of the sunroom.

Once you have settled into this beautiful place, you will find that the days pass quickly, and when the time to leave approaches, you will find yourself thinking that you want to come back here again. read more show less

Just a mile from this house I spent carefree summers as a child with my parents, siblings, aunt, uncle and cousins in my grandparents' home on Cape Cod. When children were born to us, my wife and I brought them to that same house. Now we are in the season of life where grandchildren have appeared and we want them to experience the joys of this beautiful place. You might say that just as the herring return from the sea climbing up the streams to the lakes and ponds where they hatched to spawn their young, so we have returned to Cape Cod as a place where we enjoy renewal.

We fell in love with this house when we saw photos of it on the internet. It bears the stamp of older days and has stood the test of time. It has been lovingly cared for by generations of owners before us, and we intend to care for it similarly.

What is special about this property?
We were drawn to the character of this place. In a world where things are built to be thrown away soon after being bought, this house was built to last.

What is special about your town?
Harwich has many beautiful conservation lands with wonderful hiking trails. Bring bicycles with you to bike on the Cape Cod Rail Trail or rent bikes nearby. There are many theaters, museums and restaurants a short distance from here. Boston is a little more than an hour's drive from here. Kids love riding go-carts and playing mini-golf here. Cape Cod has fantastic libraries that are available to anyone.
