Description

You are afforded privacy and peace in this charming, quaint Cape Cod cottage that is 13 miles from P-town and a 5-minute drive from Wellfleets' famous glacial ponds and ocean beaches. Cottage amenities include: indoor-outdoor showers, satellite TV, deck with a view of Wellfleet Harbor, a large pine tree-filled yard with two hammocks, a washer/dryer, and a fully-equipped galley kitchen.

Walk through the yard to a harbor beach that's across from Wellfleet pier. A 20-minute walk along the beach over Uncle Tim's bridge takes you to Wellfleet Center. Biking and walking trails abound. Some things you will enjoy while staying in Wellfleet:

Carl and I enjoy the food at the Wicked Oyster – a left at the lights into the center and it’s on your right. The Bookstore is right across from Mayo Beach – the food and prices are moderate and the view is great. You can get there by turning left at the lights into the center and then taking a left at the sign to the harbor – follow commercial street past the pier and around the corner and the Bookstore is there. We think the best seafood is a little ‘hole in the wall’ in Orleans just past Stop n Shop. It’s called Sir Crickets. Seafood is served up in paper but it is yummy! In town is Winslow’s Tavern. It’s very costly but the retired 1st Congregational Church’s reverend plays the piano there and he’s good. Friday nights Carl and his band, Big Jazz play at the Duck Creek Tavern (right next to the Wicked Oyster).

Wednesday nights, there is square dancing on the pier.

Provincetown is a great place to go on a rainy day – lots of shops and good restaurants (our favorite is the Lobster Pot pretty much in the center). Also, you can catch a ‘whale watching’ boat. They also have Dune tours. The dunes in P-town are a natural phenomenon. Ask anyone where you can find ‘Art’s Dune Tours’. There are houses there that people are allowed to live in free for the summer. The only condition is that they prove to the town selectmen that their purpose for living is the pursuit of art. When my kids were little they would let you climb the dunes but due to erosion that’s not allowed anymore.

If you travel to the very end of Commercial St. in P-town you’ll arrive at the Provincetown Inn. They allow the public to use their outdoor pool.

If you travel toward Orleans on Rt. 6, across from ‘Rookies Restaurant’ there’s a street on your right called Lieutenants Island. Turn right there and at the end is a small wooden bridge that is safe to go over and Lieutenants Island is on the other side of it. But be careful because if the tide’s in the water covers the bridge and you can’t get off of the island until the tide recedes!

If you decide to do a Whale Watch, chances are you’ll see schools of dolphin also.

Heading toward P-town, on your right, almost across from Mobey Dick’s restaurant is a road called Gull Pond. If you turn right and keep your eyes peeled you’ll see a stone stanchion that says Gull pond. Turn left and you can’t miss it. They rent paddle-boats; the water’s warm. There’s a sluice-way at the end of the pond that enters into another pond.

PS … If you want to do a charter fishing trip there are oodles of charter boats on the pier! There’s nothing like fresh grilled striper bass. Our favorite charter is ‘Jack's Mate’. When going toward P-town, take any right hand turn and go to the end and you’ll wind up at an ocean beach. Have fun!

Dear Carl, Steph & John, We are thoroughly enjoying our 12 day stay at your cottage! This location is perfect for us as we love Wellfleet, and being able to walk to the beach. Thank you for sharing your space and for making us feel so welcome. Thanks also for sharing your tools for our bicycle repair and for the tarp to cover our bikes and protect them from the rain. We love the porch, deck, huge yard and the outdoor shower. Thank you for your hospitality!

PS .. Carl, we really enjoyed listening to you practice your piano in the mornings. You are a fabulous pianist!

Dear Carl, Steph, John, Charlie and Cottage -- Thank you for the most restful vacation we've had in years. You are a wonderful hospitable team. We WILL be back!!
For visitors - don't miss Sunset at Duck Harbor- Swimming, canoeing or kayaking at Gull Pond - Church, turned community center at the center of town - look for the hand-carved doors and GO INSIDE! JAZZ at Duck Creek Tavern Friday night (Carl is an artist on the keys!). We will never forget all of the above and the incredibly well-equipped kitchen, the comfy beds and hammocks, frequent couch naps and discovering the pencil sharpener collection. .. Heather Hill had previously been maintained and rented by Carl's mom. When she passed he and I, with help from our children began doing the same. Previous to that Carl and I had owned Gutsy Bender's Restaurant (the new Fire Station is now on that property). Carl and I did not accept retirement well so I began painting watercolors and Carl created yard art and plays the piano either as a solo or with his band 'Big Jazz'. We live in Wellfleet year around with our rescue beagle, Gracie.

What is special about this property?
First let me say that Heather Hill is NOT a cottage colony. We are located atop a hill along with 3 other rental properties. Our rental has a very large yard with 2 hammocks and if you have children, they will enjoy our tire swing. Our son lives in NY and when he visits he complains that the birds wake him in the morning. It is a 5 minute walk through our yard to the Harbor beach. Once on the beach it is a 20 minute walk along the beach, over Uncle Tim's walking bridge, into the center of Wellfleet. Privacy, peace and quiet abound. Ponds and ocean beaches are a 5 minute drive from Heather Hill.

What is special about your town?
Wellfleet is a town seeped in History. As you travel down Main street you will pass the historical society. They offer walking tours in and around Wellfleet. There is one market and one bank in town. Also, Preservation Hall in the center of town offers a variety of activities and entertainment throughout the summer. We boast a live theatre (W.H.A.T) that not only features name actors and actresses but there are also children’s plays. We are approximately 13 miles from P-Town and 13 miles from Orleans.
