Description

Description

This is a simple house, furnished comfortably but not fancily, with original artwork and nice textiles. There are two small bedrooms (one with a double bed, the other with a twin), one bath with shower and tub, and a small but reasonably equipped kitchen. The large L-shaped living room overlooks the water and has a fireplace for cool evenings. There are one single beds heaped with cushions in one end of the L, as well as a sofa and easy chairs, a tv/dvd and radio. A screened porch on the east side of the house makes a sunny place for breakfast, and a brick terrace on the west is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset over the water, with a drink or a meal. The outdoor shower is great after a day at the beach. No kitsch, but also no dishwasher. There is a washing machine, but not a dryer.

The house is set well back from the small loop road, which has fewer than a dozen houses on it, so very little traffic. Ponds, ocean and bay beaches are minutes away by car. Or you can walk down the hill and around the cove to an uncrowded bay beach. A forty five minute walk along the shore in the other directions takes you into Wellfleet village, still a small, pretty town with several good restaurants, a rather upscale grocery store, fine fish and produce market, nice shops and many art galleries. Wellfleet has a thriving summer theater – the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater - a movie theater down Route 6, and a fun weekend flea market. The Audubon Sanctuary is a wonderful place to explore and to attend workshops.

Wellfleet is justly famous for its sweeping miles of dune-flanked ocean beach, its more than half a dozen pristine glacial ponds, and its many sheltered bay beaches. A large part of Wellfleet is National Seashore land, and provides a nice variety of walks; a day on Great Island can be spent hiking for several hours without seeing a house.

The cottage is an ideal combination of quiet retreat, but within an interesting summer community.

    Peaceful getaway

Spent two blissful weeks in Aylette's 1940's cottage overlooking Chipmans Cove. This was a perfect place to unwind and enjoy Wellfleet. The cottage is owned by the original family and has been lovingly maintained. Looking forward to my return visit next year..

    Old Cape Cod

Back in the 40s and 50s--before the traffic was heavy--artists and writers with free summers, a bit of money, and a lot of imagination were drawn to outer Cape Cod. It's still possible to see what they saw. This little house, with its beautiful views, is the sort of place they liked. In fact, many of them passed through its doors. On summer evenings, refreshed from the outdoor shower, I like to sit on the back porch, look west, sip a glass of wine, and think about those days.

    Best Kept Secret

We have enjoyed the simplicity and "old Cape Cod" charm of this cottage for 20 years and counting, both in and out of season. The light is lovely, the views unsurpassed, the fireplace cozy and inviting. If you are looking for all the updates of a modern home, this is not the place for you, but if you seek relaxation and simple comforts while overlooking Chipman's Cove and the Cape Cod Bay from the back patio, truly one of the most beautiful scenes on the Cape, this little haven may be just what you are seeking. show more show less

We first won Aylette's wonderful summer cottage at a charity auction. Our original visit was planned for 3 days; we stayed a week. Now, the cottage is part of our annual family summer tradition. Our son, just three when we first arrived at the cottage, quickly named it 'the hermit crab house' for the little crabs on the shore, and talks about from the moment we must leave the house to the time we return the next summer. We love the light, the view down to the beautiful inlet, the outdoor shower, the light in the trees off the screened in breakfast porch, and the fireflies in the tall grass at night. Over the years, we have been visited by many friends and all concur: the cottage is most special place they've been to. show more show less

Aylette’s Wellfleet cottage offers an idyllic and quintessentially Cape Cod experience. Mornings on the “breakfast porch”, sunsets on the patio, rainy days (rare, of course) snuggled up with a book in the “great room”, and (perhaps most fun of all) the outdoor shower option—are among my favorite cottage memories. I’ve enjoyed week-long vacations in both July and early September, both on my own and with guests; so I’ve had opportunities to enjoy both the out of doors--on the patio, on the path to Chipman’s Cove, and walks around the Cove--and indoors by a cozy fire in the unusual and beautiful corner fireplace. Peaceful quiet abounds in the neighborhood, while, of course, all the pleasures of Wellfleet and the beauties of the Cape are so easily accessible. I love it, and I certainly look forward to returning this season! show more show less

Dear Cape Cod Visitors ~ Staying in the Jenness Cottage is for us the consummate Cape Cod experience. The view is spectacular. The cottage is cozy and offers the most spectacular view of a Cape sunset you can imagine. Our two weeks in August are the highlight of our year!
