My husband Don and I (Kathy) have owned and loved our home in Wellfleet for over twenty five years. Don is a very handy retired house painter and I had a career in Human Resources. Don grew up in south Georgia, which you will know the minute he speaks! We met when we both worked at Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta. We are dog people, have had a long line of rescued shelties, and currently have three rescued shelties and our large, sweet ''foster fail'' Lincoln (part Great Dane??). We live off-Cape in a wooded area similar to the location of our Wellfleet home. We love our natural environment! Getting to Wellfleet is a little less than a two hour drive for us.
What is special about this property?
We love that our property is within easy reach of all of Wellfleet's assets, yet remains private, wooded and secluded. We have three mostly wooded acres (with plenty of cleared land for enjoying surrounding the house), and benefit from some of our neighbors having secluded larger parcels of land. There are excellent walking trails from as close as the back or front yard, with others close by (one system of trails in particular (accessed through Pilgrim Springs Rd.) I tend to drive or bike to, although I have walked it upon occasion). The house sits at the end of a dirt road.
Our home is regular Cape Cod style structure that we have well maintained over the years. The home is cozy and reminiscent of Cape vacations from bygone eras. The back yard is spacious, with picnic tables, hammock and lounge chairs. Parking for three cars. Sometimes a car parks near the big old apple tree. That tree was old when we arrived 25 years ago, and the apples aren't good, but it still, somehow, puts on the most beautiful blossom show every spring.
What is special about your town?
Wellfleet is just special. Hands down. While it has become a visitor favorite, it remains a real town with real non tourist connected people living here, with deep connections to the natural world. The seafaring tradition of South Wellfleet (mackerel), and today's world famous Wellfleet oysters continue. Due to its inlet, we have unusual strandings of dolphins and often turtles every year. I am privileged to have seen a 500 lb. leatherback turtle rescued in Wellfleet and released. The town has huge holdings of miraculously preserved Cape Cod National seashore. The residents of Wellfleet appreciate this - I observe they tend to use less commercial fertilizers and pesticides on their properties, and we love our very popular transfer station with its swap shop and careful recycling program.
The beaches are magnificent - bay, ocean or pond - have your pick. Each has unique qualities. The town area is fun....lots of galleries, restaurants and stores, including my always favorite non-profit AIM Thrift Store! The town is very walkable. Walk to the harbor, check out the boats and the osprey nest right in the middle of the dock. And explore the many wonderful surrounding towns, each different yet all offering a special preserved natural environment. Visit Provincetown, go whale watching, check out all the great stores and restaurants. Visit the National Seashore headquarters in Provincetown. Endless things to do. I am happy to help with suggestions.
