Description

Description

Built on a knoll in 1870 by a Wellfleet ship captain, our sun-drenched house has 4 bedrooms and 2 baths and sleeps 8. It overlooks a vast lawn that abuts seven acres of protected conservation land, yet the bucolic property is only a short walk into Wellfleet village.

Inside, original wood floors and high ceilings run throughout. French doors lead from the living room, with its wood-burning fireplace, onto a huge porch that’s perfect for long dinners, good books and afternoon naps. The dining room seats 8, and the well-stocked galley kitchen has an induction range, regularly-sharpened chef’s knives, two lobster pots, and all the gear needed to shuck, boil, bake, grill or broil your seafood of choice.
There’s room for everyone to spread out. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a queen and a twin daybed, the back bedroom has a queen and its own en-suite bathroom, and the children’s room has a twin bed. Downstairs, a fourth bedroom with a queen bed sits next to a full bath, which is ideal for anyone who’d rather skip the stairs. The second floor also has an office nook and a charming 1930s bathroom with its original tile and a deep soaking tub. Kids (and parents) will love the playroom, stocked with antique toys, puzzles, vintage board games, and puppet theater.

Beyond the porch, the lawn invites all manner of play. (Footballs, soccer balls, Wiffle balls, bats, Frisbees, and croquet and bocce sets are all available on request.) You’ll also find a spacious outdoor shower, gas and charcoal grills, and lawn chairs for watching the kids, sunsets, and, quite regularly, wild turkeys and rabbits.

The house is set up for comfort. Every bedroom has window air conditioning. There’s Wi-Fi throughout and a dedicated work nook. The living room has a 65-inch TV with Apple TV and Sonos speakers. A commercial-grade Speed Queen washer and dryer handle towels and clothes with ease, and families with little ones will find a crib, a Pack ‘n Play and a high chair ready to use. There’s off-street parking for three cars.

The location is hard to beat. Mayo Beach, famous for its sunsets, is a 15-minute walk or a 2-minute drive. Wellfleet’s shops, restaurants, ice cream and pier are all within walking distance, and Great Island, the freshwater ponds and the ocean beaches along Ocean View Drive are a short drive away. (Town beach stickers are required from late June to Labor Day; you’ll need your rental agreement to buy them online.)

Good to know: request to book only; 7-night minimum; bring your own sheets and towels or add linen service ($350/week); pets by prior approval ($200 pet cleaning fee); maximum 8 guests.

Full disclosure: We’re new to WeNeedaVacation, so there are no reviews here yet, but we’ve hosted since 2018 and have been rated a 5.0 “Guest Favorite" elsewhere. read more show less

    About Allen

    Member since:
    10/26/2026
Allen has been welcoming summer vacationers to Howland House since 2018. The rest of the year, he writes children's books, novels and memoirs, teaches, builds dry-stone walls, and fixes the persnickety windows, gutters, downspouts, doors and locks of his Outer Cape home. Past guests say he's quick with local tips, whether that's the best spot to watch the sunset, which ponds to swim in, which bike paths to ride or where to find the finest fried clams.

What is special about this property?
Here's what's unique about our place: Howland House is an antique gem you get to live in. When Captain Benjamin Higgins Swett Pierce built the place in 1870 he set it on a knoll just above the village so he could watch the ships docking in Wellfleet harbor. Then, for nearly three-quarters of a century, as untended forest obscured the ocean view, the property was maintained by his niece and heir, Lydia Newcomb, the imperious founder of the Wellfleet Historical Society.

With its mansard roof, patented Babcock sash locks, walnut newel posts, and hidden servants' staircase, it is fine example of Second Empire architecture. But what guests love most is the feeling of the place: the airy light-filled rooms, the sense of space, and the vast lawn that stretches out beyond the back porch. It's an oasis of calm, just a short walk from town.

What is special about your town?
Here's a HIGHLY personal list composed by a nine-year-old vacationer: Top Fun things to do as a kid in Cape Cod
