Hi! I have been vacationing on the Cape for years with my family, but fell in love with it when I was volunteering with AmeriCorps after college. We got to experience so many areas I never knew existed. We tracked a whale's breathing in Wellfleet Harbor, rescued dolphins from the bay, and helped the Cape Cod National Seashore fire crew with controlled burns to make room for endangered plants. We rebuilt beach stairways, cleared invasive species, maintained trails and herring runs, and went shellfishing. I gained an appreciation for this amazing peninsula and couldn't leave! I went back after earning a graduate degree in Environmental Conservation and worked at the Mass Audubon in Wellfleet and the Cape Cod Organic Farm in Barnstable and got to experience even more of all the Cape has to offer. Several years later, living in Quincy, MA and teaching in Boston Public Schools, I bought this little cottage right in the center of my favorite place.
What is special about this property?
This hidden nook is a great neighborhood for kids! At low tide, you can walk down the beach all the way down to the river, Mill Creek, Safe, quiet, easy to wheel the kayaks down to the beach or go for a family bike ride. Besides the two small beaches in the neighborhood, you can get to Seagull Beach--bigger, with a snack bar and bathrooms--without having to drive on rt. 28. It's also a beautiful bike ride! For some nightlife, drive 15 minutes to the British Beer Company (known locally as the BBC), a classy bar in Hyannis, to hear awesome live music and sample from dozens of craft beers.
What is special about your town?
Our neighborhood is so quiet and away from the crowds, but still in the middle of the Cape, making it accessible to everything. The cottage is walking distance to two small beaches, a fifteen-minute bike-ride to a great large beach, about 15 minutes from the ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. And even better, you can avoid the busy Route 28. The road to our neighborhood intersects it at a traffic light, enabling you to cross it and take parallel backroads instead, go straight up to Route 6, or cross entirely and enjoy the scenic Route 6a.
We are also within a mile of amazing breakfast diners - Ann and Fran's and the Keltic Kitchen, and the more casual Bagels & Beyond, for delicious homemade bagels, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, and flavored coffee. Also within a mile are Luke's Supreme Liquors, Penguin Ice Cream, and Cape Cod Inflatable Park. (I haven't gotten to experience this last one yet because we don't have kids, but it looks so fun! Giant inflatable slides, bouncy houses, zip-lines, and trapeze!)
