Description

Description

This is a charming classic Vineyard beach cottage with a large 2-level deck and a truly spectacular view. Previous renters have told us that neither the photos nor the description capture the magical experience of sitting on the deck and looking out over the long ever-changing view, which includes a salt marsh, Menemsha Pond, the Lobsterville beaches, Vineyard Sound, the Elizabeth Islands, and - on a clear day - even a glimpse of Buzzards Bay through the ''holes'' between the Elizabeth Islands. We like to think of it as the best view on the island. The near view features the lovely marsh, which ebbs and flows with the tide and which features abundant wildlife such as ospreys, snowy egrets, swallows, and deer.

The main floor of the house includes a large open space with sliding glass doors looking out onto the wonderful view. In that space is a sitting area, a dining area, and a recently re-modeled kitchen. Also on that floor are a master bedroom with a queen bed, a window to the view, and an en suite bathroom; a 2nd bedroom with a queen bed and sliding glass doors out to the deck; and a 2nd full bathroom in the hall.

On the lower level, there is a 3rd bedroom with a queen bed and sliding glass doors out to the yard and the view, and a 3rd full bathroom with a washer and dryer and a walk-out door. There is also a large sitting room with a large window, a walk-out door, a TV and 2 twin beds, which can serve as a 4th bedroom.

There is a separate small building (12’ x 12’) with 2 twin beds (the 5th bedroom), which is very attractive to teenagers. There is no bathroom, but there is the outside door to the bath on the lower level of the main house, just across the yard. The property also features an outdoor shower.

Renters have access to a private beach on Menemsha Pond, just a short walk (2/10 of a mile) down a dirt road. Because it is on the pond, there are no waves, making it especially suitable for young children and serious swimmers.

The house is located “Up-Island,” that is, in the western part of the island, which is sparsely populated, rural, and close to some of the best ocean beaches on the island. Squibnocket is 1.1 miles away and Lucy Vincent is 4 miles away.

There is no fireplace, but there is a wood-burning stove for those cool spring and fall nights.

$500 discount for 2 weeks.

The view is even more spectacular than the photos

This is a fine beach house, but the spectacular view of Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound beyond separates it from other houses in which we have stayed on Martha's Vineyard. The deck maximizes the view, and the living space and 2 bedrooms share the view, too. The private beach is great for kids and in easy walking distance, perfect for a quick swim when you don't have time to go to one of Chilmark's beautiful ocean beaches.

The hosts are great - very helpful without being intrusive. They have made several significant upgrades since our stay in 2019. I expect that the accommodations will continue to improve. But there is no way to improve the view. show more show less

    Up-island picturesque retreat

We were fortunate to stay at this beautiful property for two weeks in August. We arrived just as the sun was setting and stepped onto the deck to watch the sun go down on the salt marsh and Menemsha Pond. The view literally took my breath away and continued to throughout our 2-week stay. The house is not fancy, but the layout is great and extremely comfortable. The kitchen is so well-stocked with every appliance, pot and pan you could ever need that even my amateur chef husband felt at home. There was plenty of space for our crew of nine, and an expansive deck with table, chairs, loungers and a gas grill. The house is situated on a private road with access to a private pond, just minutes down the road. Perfect for my young nephews and elderly parents as the water was calm and warm. The owners have a canoe and a board which we didn't use but always meant to and wish we had. Kate and her husband are incredibly gracious and attentive hosts. They immediately responded to our questions and came to the house for small repairs and even brought us a charcoal grill when the gas grill needed to be replaced. When It looked like Hurricane Henri would hit the Vineyard, they brought us tons of extra water and advised us about how to manage should we lose power (we didn't). We have already booked next summer's stay and can't wait to come back!

    Idyllic vacation spot

We recently spent 2 weeks at this house. The house is quite spacious and has a well stocked kitchen with modern appliances. The house is in a very private spot and this worked out very well for us, having a large dog with us. The downstairs can be humid, but there is an efficient constantly-running dehumidifier(there was no mold or excessive mustiness). There are 3 bathrooms as well as an outdoor shower, which we used regularly.

The house does not have A/C and on very hot days it can get hot, but there are ample fans throughout the house and we found that the majority of the time we were comfortable. There was often a lovely breeze from the ocean.

The deck has spectacular views, overlooking Menemsha pond and the open ocean beyond it. We saw varied birds including white egrets, herons and even deer in the early morning. We ate most meals on the deck and were able to totally relax there.

There is a small beach on Menemsha pond, which is a 5 minute walk from the house. At first, we thought we would mainly go to the main ocean beach, Lucy Vincent, but we found that the pond beach was a very peaceful spot and we often swam there with our dog and rented kayaks and paddled in the pond. We did obtain passes for Lucy Vincent beach, which is a beautiful ocean beach with nice surf (no dogs allowed during summer months). The pass includes access to Squibnocket beach, but we did not make it there.

We have stayed in "fancier" houses, but there is something very special about this house that leads us to highly recommend a stay there. The privacy, the beautiful views from deck, the nearby beach on the pond are all hard to beat. We also found that the owners were very cordial via email and receptive to any inquiries.

    Quiet Chilmark Retreat

I was lucky to stay for a whole month in this Chilmark home with beautiful views of a salt marsh and, beyond it, Menemsha Pond. The home is in a great location, just a short drive to Squibnocket Beach and about ten minutes to Lucy Vincent and Philbin Beaches. There's also a small beach on Menemsha Pond just a short walk down the dirt road.

The kitchen is well-stocked with every pot, pan, cooking utensil one might need, along with a full spice cabinet. I couldn't have been happier picking up fish and seafood from nearby
Larsen's and produce from Beetlebung and North Tabor Farms and cooking at the house.

Kate, Joe and Paul were terrific hosts and stopped by a couple of times for minor house improvements. There's a closet full of board games, a bookcase filled with books, and a nice yard where my dog loved watching/chasing birds and rabbits. On cool mornings and evenings, the gas fireplace made the home warm and cozy, and, on warmer days, a gentle breeze came through from the deck sliders.

I can't wait to visit again!

    Two Weeks in Paradise

I recently stayed at this property with a group of friends and had the perfect vacation getaway. The house itself provides so many wonderful features: open kitchen and social space, private rooms and bathrooms, a wood burning stove, beach supplies and more. For me, the main highlights of the home were the areas I started and finished most days. Waking up in nature in the outdoor shower (you'll want one at your home afterwards) and catching the ultimate sunsets and star showers from the multilevel back porch. The house is walking distance to a private beach on Menemsha pond perfect for swimming, kayaking and clamming. If you're looking for waves, some of the best sandy beaches on the island are within 3-5 minute drives. There's a lot to explore on this end of the island from the Gay Head lighthouse and Cliffs to Menemsha harbor's fish markets on bike, foot or by car. Speaking of markets, there are also wonderful farm stands (some open 24 hrs) close by: Beetlebung, Mermaid Farm and Grey Barn for fresh meat, dairy and produce. You can also get to the Chilmark Store and 7a for small groceries and delicious sandwiches. We can't wait to return in the future to make more memories at this property which truly serves as the ideal home base for the perfect Vineyard vacation. show more show less

A great MV beach house .We spent 3 weeks there and could not have had a better located home and the view is great !!!
Not only did my family have a great summer vacation on MV; we also made friends with the owners. They were very helpful and attentive to making sure our vacation was the best it could be.
If you like incredible views, access to Menemsha Pond, sailing, swimming, paddle boarding, and enjoying the Vineyard's beautiful sunsets from your deck, this house is perfect.

Outstanding view from an incredible deck
The view across Memensha Pond from the deck is beautiful all day long, but particularly spectacular at sunset. The deck stretches across the width of the back of the house, with more than enough space for a large group. It's a short walk to the small beach on the Pond, great for kids and when you don't want to spend a lot of time getting to one of the ocean beaches. The house itself is beach house funky, serviceable but not upscale. Since we were on a beach vacation, it fit our needs comfortably.

    Amazing deck and location
This was our second trip to this house. The location is ideal if you want to escape the chaos of down Island. The deck is incredible with amazing views of Menemsha Pond and the ocean . Short walk to a nice beach on the pond that is perfect for swimming. We had magical days on Lucy Vincent Beach and bringing our dog to Squibnocket Beach before 9am.

We basked in the sunshine on the deck. It's a magical place to watch the birds, wind and water. The location is private, quiet and relaxing. The outdoor shower was amazing once we got the right temp. We would definitely go back.

Kate and Paul Shands are brother and sister. They are long-time summer residents of Martha's Vineyard, and each of them has another house on the island. Kate & her husband live on the island full-time, and Paul visits frequently. This cottage is the family house where we grew up in the summers. As noted in the description of the house, this property is a little gem. The house is basic but charming, and the deck and its view of Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound are truly wonderful, as is the little private beach on the pond that's an easy walk down a dirt road. We love to sit on the deck and watch the changing view, with its abundant wildlife and boating activities, including sailboat races twice a week. The beach offers swimming without waves, sunbathing, beach-combing, and a place to store Sunfish, kayaks, and canoes.

What is special about your town?
Martha's Vineyard is an island off the coast of Massachusetts. Chilmark is located at the western, more rural end of the island, know as ''Up-Island''. It is quiet, and features two lovely town beaches on the ocean a short drive away. The very picturesque village of Menemsha, visible from the house, is an active fishing village with two fish markets featuring the freshest of fish. It also has a public beach on Vineyard Sound where crowds of tourists gather nightly to watch the sunsets. (These sunsets are lovely but the sunsets visible from our own deck compare very favorably!) The nearby town of Aquinnah features the Gay Head lighthouse and colorful clay cliffs, along with a rich Native American heritage. ''Down-Island'' about 15 miles away, there are 3 unique towns (Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven) featuring shopping and tourist activities, as well as the oldest continuously-operating carousel in the country and a Methodist ''campground'' with gingerbread cottages.
