NEW PHOTOS1 July is awesome. July 19-Aug 1. Two Open Weeks... Come and vacation!
Summer, spring and fall each offer unique beauty to enjoy in this rural setting.
Whether you"re a single person, a couple, a family of three or four with an occasional visitor this rental could be perfect for you. The compound is at the end of a long driveway. There are three small buildings on this site and you can use them all. The owner lives nearby.
The main building, the Guest Cottage, is an inviting rental with a complete renovation of this comfortable cottage. White-washed walls, a brand new staircase, floors redone with eco-friendly products, a state-of-the-art Renai on-demand hot water heater, and mini-split AC all make this cottage special. It provides a living area, well-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, and a shower/tub/washer dryer bathroom. There"s a door in the bathroom leading to an outside shower, hidden in a maze of privet hedge.
Upstairs, the space is separated into two sections by a staircase with a queen bed on one side and a knee wall separating the queen from two twin beds. A ceiling fan keeps the air moving and the temperature from the mini-split AC can be raised or lowered for your comfort. Blackout shades encourage sleeping in. This place has island connections. Wood harvested from the site of the original Agricultural Hall off island provide floor boards and framing and beams from an Alley"s Store renovation in the 90s bring history to the cottage.
A second building, the Art Shack, offers supplies for art projects, comfy chairs, a fainting couch and a long table to use for reading/writing/puzzle building or any other project you can imagine. A queen bed is tucked in the corner. There"s a shed roof behind the Art Shack where you can leave your bicycles to keep them out of the weather. You"ll find beach chairs and an umbrella here. There are even some fishing rods hanging on the wall. This insulated building stays cool with a window air conditioner. The Art Shack faces the Guest Cottage"s bathroom door so there"s easy access.

The Littlest Cottage provides an extra queen bed for overnight visitors. Again, a window air conditioner keeps the temperature comfortable for sleeping. There"s a bureau to store visitors" clothes. This building also faces the Guest Cottages bathroom door and outdoor shower.

The yard surrounding these buildings is well-maintained and sprayed regularly with essential oils to discourage outside pests. There"s an outside table for eating, a Weber gas grill for grilling your favorite meal and chairs for lounging. In the garden are herbs, early peas, beans and flowers for picking. Whatever is there is yours to share. There is a collection of outdoor activity equipment - Badminton, croquet, horseshoes and bocce balls - to set up and use. The yard is mowed regularly and perennial beds take turns showing off their blooms.

At the beginning of the driveway there"s a small sign that says "Trail." This is an entrance to a network of Sheriff"s Meadow trails which lead to others sponsored by different island conservation organizations. You can use the App TrailsMV to navigate your walks. These trails bring you through oak woods being infiltrated by young beech trees; views of the ocean and the sound of waves cause you to pause; you may pass fields, blooming gardens and grazing herds. If you"re already a walker, this is paradise. If you"re new to walking, a babbling brook will get you hooked. This location allows you to walk without driving.

With the lease comes permission from the town of Chilmark to purchase stickers for Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket Beaches. Menemsha Beach is free to all.

At the nearby Chilmark Community Center, camp is available for children, and tennis for all members of the family with a tennis membership which you can purchase. The Chilmark Store porch is a great place to enjoy lunch or pick up a picnic and pack it for the beach. Next door is the Chilmark Tavern which has outdoor and indoor dining for dinner. Mmmmm good!

Sunset at Menemsha Beach is famous because it"s fabulous. Order ahead cooked lobsters, clams, oysters and a bag of mussels from Larsen"s Fish Market in Menemsha; or if you prefer, stand in line and order on the spot. You can get burgers or lobster rolls at The Galley for lunch or dinner. Early morning coffee and pastries are available from Iggies. On your way home, stop at Beetlebung Farm for fresh bread, veggies and prepared farm dishes. Feeling too tired for an adventure? Then you can bring your delicacies home, but if you have energy left after a day of beach and swimming, walk down to Menemsha Beach, set up your chairs and enjoy. You can amble along the jetty or the dock after you eat and wait for the breathtaking sunset. Craving dessert? Hike over the hill to The Galley and enjoy ice cream - a cone or a Sundae. When sunset finally happens, get your hands ready and applaud the beauty along with everyone else. It"s a thrill to be a part of it all.
