Description

Martha's Vineyard's largest and most elegant vacation rental home. The Captain Morse House is close to Edgartown Massachusetts shopping, dining, golf, fishing beaches and harbor. The home features 26 rooms with 11 bedrooms, 7 baths, 2 kitchens and 2 dining rooms. The large front porches facing Edgartown harbor are an ideal place to spend the day. The over-sized back yard and garden can host weddings and events.

Outside of the home on the North Water side facing the water are two spacious porches with water views of Edgartown Harbor, Chappaquiddick and the Chappy Ferry. The harbor is just down the street, and you have access to the public North Wharf there.

The back yard features a spacious bricked patio with seating for ten where you can enjoy barbecue, croquet and other lawn games. There is off-street parking for three cars (one large and 2-3 small). This is one of Edgartown's largest back yards.

We are committed to doing whatever we can to make your stay on Martha's Vineyard a special one. Our house is one of the finest available in town and offers visitors a truly unique island experience. Judging from our reviews our guests agree as well.

Breathtaking

This home is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to experience one of the best vacation rentals on the island. My family rented the house in July of 2018. We had an incredible stay, and the memories we made will last a life time. The home has EVERYTHING you will need to enjoy a fun filled vacation. The location of the home is truly ideal with just a short walk (2 blocks) to Edgartown Harbor, 3 area beaches to chose from and a just short stroll to the business district with some of the best restaurants and shops on the island.

The home itself exudes old world charm, yet has ALL of the amenities and upgrades that will make your stay a memorable one. The owner, and his team, are there for you if you have any questions during your time at the property. Very nice people and very accommodating. There is plenty of outdoor living space including the private patio in the rear of the home with seating for the extended family that includes a huge gas grill, plenty of front porch seating as well with some views of the harbor or you can even lounge out on the well manicured grounds with beautiful mature plantings. There is no need to rent bikes as there are plenty of high-end bikes with helmets in the shed for your use. You will not find a better vacation on the island. This is the one!! #fivestars

Perfect Venue for Large Group Gathering

We spent a wonderful week at the Captain Morse House, which was rented for my son's wedding. My son and his bride wanted a "destination wedding" and the Morse House in Edgartown was the perfect place. We had a total of 20 guests who were comfortably accommodated. Many traveled in from the Midwest and were first time visitors to the area. They were impressed by the grandeur of the house and the many nautical themed pictures which adorn the walls. Having everyone under one roof certainly made the logistics of an event like a wedding much easier.

The kitchen and food preparation areas are first-rate. The two kitchens are well stocked with every imaginable kitchen gadget or pot and pan, as well as enough place settings for almost any sized group. One of the two kitchens features a six-burner range that would please any gourmet chef.

Although the Captain Morse House is an old house, what is most impressive is everything works. The plumbing is great, and all the showers have an impressive amount of water pressure. The electrical system is modern and unlike some old houses, you can simultaneously run the coffee maker and microwave and not pop circuit breakers. There is a great WiFi setup, and several big screen TV's. We didn't spend much time indoors watching TV as the weather was perfect when we were there, but you could do that on a rainy day.

As there is limited parking at the house, I would recommend off-island guests leave their cars on the mainland. Getting around the island is easy using the VTA buses, taxis, or Uber. Once in Edgartown, guests really don't need cars, as there are dozens of shops and restaurants nearby within easy walking distance. Adventurous types can use one of the bikes available for guests to go exploring around other parts of the island.

Overall, the Captain Morse House is a wonderful venue for any event that involves a large group of people. It's perfect for weddings, family reunions, or corporate retreats. If you decide the rent the house, I am sure you will enjoy it and the Edgartown area as much as we did.

The Captain Morse House is perfect for small weddings

We arrived to this stately home late in the evening, and our jaws dropped. As we inspected the house, we fell in love with its unique character. There were all the touches of modernity combined with the charm of an older New England home. We were amazed at the size of it on the inside, as it kept getting bigger and bigger. It was perfect for our wedding party, and everyone enjoyed their stay. I loved the living room and porches at the front of house, and my room was impressive. The backyard was a perfect size for the intimate wedding reception. I was very well prepared for my arrival as Platt insured that no bit of information would be lost. Overall, I loved the experience and my family has already talked about returning next year! show more show less

Amazing Location & Tons of Space for Large it Small Groups!

My friends Melanie and Sean rented the home for all of their friends to stay during their weekend wedding and it was amazing. We had about 17 people staying in the house and there were endless sleeping options and plenty of bathrooms. I loved the feel of the home and the amenities were very accommodating. We were just a few blocks from all of the great restaurants, pubs and shopping. If you have a smaller group, the homeowners are able to section it off but if you are hosting a large group of people, this is definitely the place to stay! show more show less

Fantastic home, ideal location!

What a beautiful house in, perhaps, the best location on Martha's Vineyard. The house was elegant but not stuffy, had everything we could have ever needed. Platt was responsive, literally within minutes over a holiday week to answer any of our questions. He even patched us in to a call to the cable company he was on when we could not figure out the tv's! This beautiful home will be part of our lifetime memories! We cannot wait to return!

Highly Recommend

Our family had a fabulous time at the Captain Morris House. We had a large group of folks and the accommodations were perfect for us. We felt that the owner had thought of most everything we needed! Parking may be an issue if you have a large group and more than 1-2 vehicles.

Thank you for your review. I thought I would respond as we normally get 5 star reviews. Of course we always want to achieve 5 stars but not everyone grades that way.

The parking at our house is tight. It was built in 1840 and the For Model T was not produced until 1908. This small driveway can accommodate 4 cars total but we try to encourage people to bring less if not zero. There are plenty of good cabs and even Uber.

Each time we get feedback on the house we try to use that to improve a little bit more. For example, we had a request for more wash cloths, so we ordered 60. Without requests and feedback, we don't know and so we can't improve.

Thank you again for your rental.

A Happy Place

We just had a big family reunion/celebration at the Captain Morse House. Twenty two nephews and nieces stayed there while the rest of the group stayed with me in West Tisbury. So although I did not personally sleep at the Captain Morse House, the reports were all wonderful. The house itself is gorgeous, the guests loved the location, the lay-out of the rooms, the kitchens and the entire ambiance. They found lots of common spaces for movies and games and quiet cozy places for resting or private chats.

One word of caution. On Saturday night we had a party on the lawn. Once we hired a band, our numbers reached 35 and the weather was iffy, I rented a tent. This increased the costs enormously because I then had to file an Event Form ($1500 to go with it) extra security deposit, and was required to use Big Sky Tent Rental company, which was almost twice as expensive as other tent rental companies on the Island. While I understand Platt's reasoning, you may just want to think twice about renting a tent! .

This was a perfect way to house many family members who came from all over the country and wanted to have a love-in week. Each and every one adored the house. While it was a once-in-a life-time experience for us, I would recommend it to everyone else.

Owner Response:

We allow guests to have events but control them carefully. There is a entire page and several posts on our website describing the way we run events. Anyone wanting to run an event needs to pay a fee which goes towards the extra maintenance hard use causes. All of this is done openly, and the guest can choose whether or not they wish to proceed. I regret that it is expensive to do these events on island but this is beyond our control. We chose Big Sky because they are the top providers on the island and pre-set anchors into the lawn to specifically fit a 32 x 70 Sperry Pole Tent. We make no money on any of the vendors who come to the house. Events actually cost us. We had to replace our lawn in May of 2016 at a cost of $15,000. Hard use made that necessary and might stop events in the future.

If you have any questions about an event at the house please call or email me.

Very nice property

This property was a great solution for our annual family vacation of 17 people. We had always wanted to vacation on Martha's Vineyard. The property is meticulously maintained and the location could not be any better - just a couple of short blocks from downtown. It gave our teenage kids great independence for their shopping and dining needs. A couple of very minor requests were handled very promptly by the owner. We highly recommend this property.

Stunning property

We couldn't have asked for a better rental home in Edgartown. Beautiful bedrooms. Fantastic porch. In the center of everything. Bikes to use. Walking distance to coffee shops and restaurants. We used this as home base for my daughter's wedding. Entire family stayed there.
Bride and bridesmaids got ready and took fabulous pictures both inside, on the porch, and in the backyard. Wedding was at the Harbor View Hotel. This house was a perfect gathering spot. Owner was extremely helpful and accommodating prior to arrival. show more show less

Captain Morse House, Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA

We have just spent a wonderful week at the Captain Morse House. Twenty six members of our family celebrating my husband’s birthday. The house is very spacious and confortable, the furniture is beautifully kept and the kitchen is well stocked with all one can require for such a big crowd. Platt (the owner) was very helpful and always available to help if needed.

We can warmly recommend a vacation in this house for a large gathering.

I grew up in the Captain Morse House with my parents and brother. We had a wonderful childhood full of sailing, fishing, tennis and bike riding. Our family has been coming to the Vineyard since 1956 and can assist you in providing information for the first time or seasoned Vineyard traveler.

I went to Tabor Academy in Marion MA. and Tufts University in Medford, MA.

I encourage you to check out our website and read all the content I have added over the years to assist you in having the best vacation ever.

Call me – I love to talk about the Vineyard.

What is special about this property?
Certainly the location is #1. We are on the most beautiful street on the island, North Water Street.
The home itself was built by Captain Morse. He was Edgartown's most successful whaling captain and his home was the largest in town.
The property has been updated with all the amenities that a vacationer could want including central HVAC, modern WiFi and two wonderful kitchens that come fully equipped.
The backyard is large and has a large patio attached to it.

What is special about your town?
One of New England’s most elegant communities, Edgartown was Martha’s Vineyard’s first colonial settlement and it has been the county seat since 1642. The stately white Greek Revival houses built by the whaling captains have been carefully maintained. They make the town a museum-piece community, a seaport village preserved from the early 19th century.
Main Street is a picture book setting with its harbor and waterfront. The tall square-rigged ships that sailed all the world’s oceans have passed from the Edgartown scene, but the heritage of those vessels and their captains has continued. For the past hundred years, Edgartown has been one of the world’s great yachting centers.

To view and appreciate this town fully, you must walk its streets. North Water Street has a row of captains’ houses not equaled anywhere. Study the fanlights and widow’s walks by day and stroll down the streets after the lamps are lit.

There are excellent public beaches in the township of Edgartown. Norton’s Point, known as South Beach or Katama, is a barrier beach providing surf bathing and the opportunity to explore Katama Bay on the other side of the dunes. Lighthouse Beach, located off North Water Street near the town center, offers calm water and views of harbor activities. Bend-in-the-Road Beach, part of Joseph Sylvia Beach, has ample parking and is accessible by bicycle trail.
