The busy harbor is also home to the Black Dog Tallships, Gannon & Benjamin boatyard, and hundreds of private vessels. The harbor has played a central role in the town’s development since its inception. Originally named Holmes Hole, the harbor provided a safe haven for ships on a busy shipping route in the 18th & 19th centuries. Vineyard Haven’s downtown area offers a variety of services year round, including shops, restaurants and art galleries, and is now a proud part of the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District.
