I’ve been eating fried clams on Cape Cod since before I could see over the counter to order them. I grew up here, born and raised, and if there’s one thing I feel genuinely qualified to have strong opinions about, it’s where to find the best fried clams and fried seafood on Cape Cod — and exactly how to eat them.
Consider this your local’s guide.
Whole belly fried clams — the only way, in my opinion. Briny, crispy, and worth every minute of the wait.
First Things First: Whole Belly Fried Clams vs. Strips
If you’ve never had fried clams before, you might be tempted to start with clam strips — and I understand the impulse. They’re familiar, they’re mild, and they look like something you already know. But let me make the case for whole belly clams.
Strips are the white meat only. Whole belly fried clams are the entire clam — and that belly is where all the flavor lives. Briny, rich, a little sweet, with a crispy exterior that gives way to something that genuinely tastes like the ocean. They’re what I order every single time, without exception, and I consider them the only real way to eat a fried clam.
That said: if you’re a first-timer, strips are a perfectly reasonable on-ramp. Just don’t stop there.
The Best Clam Shacks & Fried Seafood on Cape Cod
Arnold’s Lobster & Clam Bar — Eastham
Arnold’s has been my personal gold standard for the best fried seafood on Cape Cod my entire life — I’m talking since I was a toddler, back when the waitresses served you on rollerskates. (Yes, really. Those were the days.) The rollerskates are gone, but the fried clams are still the best on the Cape in my opinion.
My recommendation: go straight for the Fisherman’s Platter. Arnold’s does such a spectacular job across the board — fried clams, fish, shrimp, calamari, oysters, scallops — that sampling everything at once is the move. Most Cape Cod clam shacks offer their own version of the platter, and it’s one of the best ways to experience the full range of fried seafood Cape Cod has to offer in one glorious sitting. Arnold’s version is the one I measure all others against. The fish and chips are also fabulous, if you want to keep it classic. And if you really want to treat yourself — order the fried lobster. Succulent, melt-in-your-mouth, and completely to die for. You will not regret it.
Behold! Arnold’s Fisherman's Platter — fried clams, fish, shrimp, calamari, oysters, scallops, and the reason I've been coming here since I was a toddler.
Kream 'N Kone — West Dennis
A Cape Cod institution, full stop. Kream 'N Kone has been serving the best fried clams on Cape Cod for decades and they are known for it — the kind of place that has regulars who have been coming since childhood and are now bringing their own kids. Don't skip it.
Captain Frosty’s — Dennis
Another one loaded with personal history for me. As a kid, Captain Frosty’s was the reward after a long day at Corporation Beach or Howes Beach — two of some of the most beautiful beaches on the Cape, by the way, if you haven’t been. The fried clams here are the real deal, and the whole experience feels like quintessential Cape Cod summer.
Cooke’s Seafood — Orleans
A genuine staple of the Lower Cape for fried seafood done right. Cooke’s has the kind of no-fuss, focused-on-the-food energy that makes a great clam shack great. Reliable, delicious every time, and absolutely worth the stop.
Baxter’s Boathouse — Hyannis
If you want some of the best fried seafood on Cape Cod and a view to match, Baxter’s is your spot. Hyannis Harbor stretching out in front of you, a basket of fried clams in hand — there are worse ways to spend a Cape Cod afternoon.
A Note for Gluten-Free Eaters
Good news: Mac’s Seafood has you covered. Mac’s Shack in Wellfleet, Mac’s Chatham Fish & Lobster in Chatham, and Mac’s Fish House in Provincetown all offer gluten-free fried seafood. Don’t let dietary restrictions keep you from the full Cape Cod clam shack experience — Mac’s makes sure you don’t have to miss out.
Go early, go hungry, and get the whole bellies. I’ll eat seafood any way it’s prepared — fried, broiled, baked, grilled, raw. But a basket of the best fried clams Cape Cod has to offer, on a warm summer evening, sun setting and the promise of a sunny beach day the next day, might just be my favorite thing about living here.
You can thank me later.
