Martha’s Vineyard Lighthouses: Scenic Beacons of the Island

Jennie Sparrow | 7/29/2025

While Martha’s Vineyard is beloved for its coastal beauty and small-town charm, its historic Martha’s Vineyard lighthouses are timeless symbols of island life. From the dramatic cliffs of Aquinnah to the quiet sands of Chappaquiddick, these five lighthouses offer stunning views and fascinating maritime history.

1. Aquinnah Lighthouse – Aquinnah

Aquinnah Lighthouse, formerly Gay Head Lighthouse, stands above the breathtaking Aquinnah Cliffs on the island's western edge. Built in 1799 and reconstructed in 1856, it was recently moved inland to escape erosion. The views here are some of the most stunning in all of New England.

2. East Chop Lighthouse – Oak Bluffs

4. Edgartown Lighthouse – Edgartown

Arguably the most photographed Martha’s Vineyard lighthouse, this beauty sits at the mouth of Edgartown Harbor. A sandy path leads visitors to the base of the tower, with wide views toward Chappaquiddick. It’s a favorite for family photos and romantic strolls alike.

5. Cape Poge Lighthouse – Chappaquiddick

Accessible only by oversand vehicle or guided tour, Cape Poge Lighthouse is tucked away at the far end of Chappaquiddick Island. Built in 1801 and rebuilt multiple times, the current structure dates from 1922. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking serenity and a bit of adventure.

Plan Your Island Adventure

Whether you’re exploring by bike, jeep, or foot, each Martha’s Vineyard lighthouse offers its own view into the island’s soul. Don’t forget your camera and check for seasonal tour schedules.
