Learn about the history and process of glassmaking

Looking for something fun and interesting to do while on your Cape or Islands vacation? Learn about the history of glass blowing and manufacturing, witness regular demonstrations of the process, or simply view exquisite examples of antique to modern pieces of this special art form.

Located in the heart of picturesque Sandwich, the Sandwich Glass Company first opened its doors in 1825 and quickly became one of most respected glass manufacturers in the world. In 1907, the Sandwich Glass Museum was opened to allow visitors to view exhibits of Sandwich glass and learn about the history of this quintessentially Cape Cod town and the glass manufacturing company that put it on the map. Today, there are over 5,000 pieces of original, reproduction and new pieces on exhibit. Visit the Sandwich Glass Museum for more information, including directions and Museum hours.

Where to Visit

Sandwich Glass Museum

Pairpoint Glass

Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks

In nearby Sagamore, not too far from the Sandwich Glass Museum, is Pairpont Glass, the oldest operating glassworks in the United States. Like Sandwich Glass, you can watch actual demonstrations of glassblowing year round and browse their inventory of beautiful glass objects.

If you’re on the Vineyard, be sure to visit Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks on State Road in West Tisbury. It, too, is more than just a gallery displaying beautiful works of art – its mission is also to bring a better understanding of glassblowing to the public.

Looking for a local place to stay? Cape Cod rentals offer the perfect accommodations to start and finish your daily excursions to the glassworks and all the sites that the Cape has to offer.

About Elizabeth Weedon

About Elizabeth Weedon: I have worked for since 2008, and I've been a loyal homeowner listed on the site since early 1998. An enthusiastic member of the Homeowner Support Team, I provide fellow Cape and Islands vacation rental homeowners with advice about online marketing and rental management techniques to ensure them a successful rental experience each season. In addition to phone and email support to our homeowners, I also create and edit much of the content on our website, as well as our Homeowner Blog and monthly newsletters. I am also the Press & PR Coordinator for the company, responsible for drafting our press releases and responding to press inquiries and interviews. I grew up summering on the Vineyard, where I have managed my family's rental home since the mid-1980's, and I'm passionately devoted to the Island. My husband and I live in Wellesley where we have raised our 2 grown kids and our Black Lab, Maisie.
