About Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Presents 93rd Annual Pow Wow...The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe hosts their 93rd Annual Pow Wow, an event that celebrates the heritage and culture of the “People of the First Light” and features three days of solemn, spiritual and festive activities. Highlights include a Traditional Dance Contest, Traditional Drumming Contest, New England Birds of Prey, and musical performances by the Wampanoag Nation singers and dancers. Winning competitors are eligible for $35,000 in prizes. A special highlight of the Pow Wow will be “Fireball.” Played with a fire-lit ball that’s kicked and carried, the game is played to heal the sick and ailing, sacrificing the players’ own pain for the sake of loved ones. Native American handcrafts and cuisine will also be showcased, including a traditional New England Clam Bake, which was invented by the Wampanoag tribe centuries ago.
