July on Cape Cod smells like beach roses. The rosa rugosa — those wild, intensely colored blooms tumbling over the dunes at the water’s edge — are at their peak this month, and their fragrance is something I look forward to all year. This month also brings two of my absolute favorite Cape traditions: the 4th of July and outdoor band concerts. Keep reading — there’s a lot of good stuff this month.

Three Things I’d Actually Do This July
—from someone who’s been doing them her whole life.
1. Celebrate the 4th of July the Cape Cod Way
The Cape goes all out for Independence Day. Chatham’s parade along Main Street on the 4th is one of the oldest in the country — this year’s theme is “Anchored in Freedom: Timeless Tides & Traditions,” stepping off at 9:30am. Chatham also hosts an early fireworks display at Veterans Field on July 2nd if you want to get a head start on the celebrating. For fireworks on the 4th itself, Falmouth Heights Beach is hard to beat — the show launches from a barge in Nantucket Sound at dusk, with the Elizabeth Islands silhouetted across the water. Bring a blanket, get there early, and plan to stay a while.

2. Go to a Cape Cod Band Concert on a Friday Night
Every summer evening across the Cape, a town somewhere is hosting a free outdoor concert — and it’s one of the best traditions around. Hyannis, Brewster, Eastham, Yarmouth, Chatham, and others all run their own series, with music, folk dances for the kids, and the kind of small-town summer energy you simply can’t manufacture. Check our events calendar for dates, bring a lawn chair, and go to at least one. You won’t regret it.
3. Cool Off in a Kettle Pond
Here’s a locals’ secret that never makes the tourist brochures: Cape Cod has nearly 900 freshwater kettle ponds, formed when glaciers retreated 18,000 years ago. In July when the ocean beaches are packed and the parking lots are full by 8am, the kettle ponds are your secret weapon. Flax Pond in Nickerson State Park in Brewster is a favorite — no motorboats, clear water, and right off the Rail Trail. Long Pond in Wellfleet has a sandy beach, floating dock, and shaded picnic area. Cool, calm, and crowd-free. Trust me on this one.
Where to Eat in July on Cape Cod
July is peak lobster roll season, and I have strong opinions. The Raw Bar at Popponesset Marketplace in Mashpee sits in a gorgeous outdoor courtyard setting — their legendary lobster roll is nearly all meat, just a hint of mayo, voted Best of the Upper Cape year after year, and so enormous most people are finishing it the next day. And Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis is a Cape institution — outdoor picnic tables overlooking Northside Marina and Cape Cod Bay, giant chunks of lobster, and feel free to bring your own bottle of something cold. Both have lines in July. Both are completely worth it.

One Last Thing: Go to the Wellfleet Drive-In
If you do one classic Cape Cod thing this July, make it a night at the Wellfleet Drive-In. It’s been running since 1957 and it’s the real deal — pull in, find your spot, and watch a movie under the stars with the smell of the ocean in the air. It’s a bucket list Cape Cod experience that locals and visitors alike put off every summer and kick themselves for missing. Don’t be that person. Go.
