About Highland Lighthouse Tower Climbs and Keepers Shop...Climb Highland Lighthouse, also known as Cape Cod Light, is Cape Cod’s oldest and tallest lighthouse. From Washington to Thoreau to Hopper. In 1796 President George Washington signed the commission to build Cape Cod’s first lighthouse in the Highlands of Truro. Henry David Thoreau wrote of his lighthouse visits to the second lighthouse in the mid 1800’s. Edward Hopper painted the present day lighthouse in 1930. In 1996, Highland Lighthouse was moved back 453 feet from the edge of the cliff. Visit Highland Lighthouse and climb the 69 steps to the top of the Lantern Room to view the Atlantic Ocean, Provincetown and Cape Cod Bay. All climbers must be at least 48" tall to climb.
