Description

'SandyToes' is a charming oceanside Nantucket Barn-style home on six levels, tucked into the woods right at the ocean. Its multiple levels and interesting spaces give the house a Swiss-Family-Robinson treehouse feeling. SandyToes is situated on a high sandy bluff overlooking the ocean and abutting acres of forested conservation land. The beach is a short walk or drive down the hill where there is at-grade beach access with few stairs.

The top floor Great Room is an inviting space at the top of the 'barn.' Under its vaulted barnwood ceiling with beams and loft, you'll find planked floors, a Sub Zero kitchen with large butcher block island, a Miele oven, 2 dishwashers, granite countertops, glass cooktop, 2 undermount sinks, terra cotta tile floors, antique cabinets, and an additional 'French door' fridge. A freestanding fireplace makes the Great Room, with its window-seat bed, big leather chairs and sectional sofa, a heavenly place to curl up with some of the scores of books provided. Email Robin if you'd like to examine a sketch of the floor plan of this intriguing home.

Above the open plan kitchen, which has wrap-around forest views, is an ocean-view loft. The dining room and dining deck, Great room, and bedrooms all look out toward the ocean. The dining deck offers shady sanctuary under its cathedral of trees and has a quality gas grill, or use a Weber kettle on the brick patio below, or roast hot dogs at the firepit at the edge of the bluff.

There are three pleasant bedrooms on the bedroom level: an ocean view room with queen pine canopy bed (railing for wall on one side) and an ocean view bedroom with king pillowtop bed with an antique headboard, and a small antique soaking tub, and a garden view bedroom with a double bed. On the entrance level, a large den/bedroom has two single beds (or king) and a new rustic-chic bathroom. The rooms have beautiful wood floors, antiques, books, and comfortable beds. On the ground floor is a den-bedroom with 2 single antique cannonball beds. This room shares the towering 2 story window with the queen room above. The dramatic beamed Great Room has a window seat bed (twin) overlooking the koi pond and the ocean. Above the kitchen in the loft (railing on 2 sides) is the last bedroom with forest and ocean views.

Please note that 2 of our bedrooms are not little boxes with 4 solid walls and a locking door: While mostly private, one room shares a 2 story vaulted space (and towering window) with the room above, giving delightful drama, and the loft over the kitchen has a railing that looks down into the dining room and Great Room and through skylights out toward the ocean, is not a closed-in bedroom.

When you step outside through French doors and stroll a few feet up the short sandy path to the bluff to a large deck and seaside garden, you experience a vast panoramic view of Cape Cod Bay from the highest spot on the Bay. At yet another deck, tucked into a private woodsy corner, you can shower outside by moonlight surrounded by forest. This charming 'upside down' barn has elegant touches but is casual for family fun and entertaining.

There are walking paths along the old Indian trail, which starts right at the SandyToes' side garden. Swim, wade, or beachcomb for starfish, sand dollars, and hermit crabs on a white, smooth sandy beach. In the inter-tidal zone, you can sometimes find blue mussels and sea clams for dinner. The water gets warmer as summer progresses, so September and October are surprisingly good times to visit.

We've been told that from our deck you can see when the bluefish come to shore in case you would like to try surfcasting. (Yes, we did have a guest who actually brought in a bluefish up from our beach.) Across the water, you can see Provincetown & Truro, or watch ships on their way to the nearby Cape Cod Canal, along which there is a safe, fun, seven-mile, level bike path and easy parking for your car.

If you ever want to leave, Plymouth Rock, the Mayflower, and the fascinating Plimoth Plantation (which is like a trip in a time machine) are only eight miles north, and Cape Cod proper is a short two miles away. Charming Sandwich is also two miles away and has a Glass Museum and Heritage Plantation and a fine antiques auction on alternate Saturdays.

The area has many world-class golf courses, antique shops, and historic homes -- some of which date to the 1600s and can be toured. And there's nothing quite like being oceanfront when the July 4th fireworks can be viewed across the water--you can see fireworks all around you as Cape Cod towns have displays that are visible right from 'SandyToes' big oceanfront deck. Campfires (current rules permitting) and clambakes on the beach complete idyllic summertime memories.

If you've ever worried that your summer rental would be shabby or tacky, crowded with cast-off furniture and depressing decor, or stripped down to the meanest minimum (we've seen so many like that), put your mind at rest. This pleasant home has been designed to please discriminating visitors with thoughtful amenities in an inspiring private woodsy oceanside location.
