When I was a kid, we spent one week each summer in a small house just outside of town with three other families. It was a bit of a circus: sleeping on the floor, singing songs, wiffle ball in the yard, playing in the surf, eating fresh bluefish, chowder at The Tavern, and breakfasts at the Downyflake. For many, Nantucket represents tradition.
NANTUCKET
Just a sandy wind-swept island!
What more would you have it be,
With a turquoise sky above it,
Around it a sapphire sea?
When its dawns are pearl and opal,
Its noons are crystals clear,
And its sunsets shower down gold dust
Till the diamond stars appear,
When to those who are born on the island,
And to many from over the sea,
'Tis fairer than all its jewels,
What more does it need to be?

About Becky Fischer: I have worked for WeNeedaVacation.com since 2003. Currently my position entails providing photography, video, and consultation services to vacation rental homeowners, and I have photographed over 700 homes on the Cape and Islands. My husband and three children moved to Brewster in 2006. I grew up outside of Boston, spent summer vacations on Nantucket, and was married in Orleans. My favorite activities on the Cape are walking on the CCRT, deep breaths at the beach, visiting great coffee shops, and working with my community to support the schools and local events.
