Enjoy the peace and quiet of a private, secluded island to rest, relax and restore your spirits. From the large deck and many widows, you can enjoy stunning water views. Spend your time watching the numerous Osprey soar over the house, sailboats and windsurfers on the bay and ships transiting the Cape Cod Canal. The southwest breeze off the water rushes through the trees and house, offering a refreshing and invigorating salt air that means your vacation has begun.
Accessible by a small bridge, the house is on a point and the last on the road and a world away from the mainland. Island life has much to offer. You will be surrounded by nature and can explore the shoreline by foot or kayak/paddleboard and swim or fish the beaches and two docks. We routinely catch Striped Bass in the salt water pond along with flounder and scup from the docks. A private path in our yard leads to a spit of land that allows you to easily explore the adjacent Little Tobey Island at low tide. You are welcome to use our 2 kayaks and 2 paddle boards.
If you enjoy birdwatching, you are in for a treat as you'll see Osprey, egrets, herons (including Great Blue Herons), Cormorants, Kingfishers, terns, plovers, and many other shore birds all over the island. Great Horned Owls and Barn Owls are frequently heard and sometimes seen. On occasion, we have spied a small group of harbor seals sunning themselves on the rocks at low tide behind the house.
Bring your own motor or sail boat and store the trailer on the property. There is a nearby public boat ramp, fueling dock and our mooring buoy is available (for boats up to 28 feet) so you can sail, fish, waterski or motor throughout Buzzards Bay. Bring your boat to either private dock to embark people and supplies.
Unlike some areas of the Cape, the shallow waters of upper Buzzards Bay are warm throughout late spring/summer/fall and perfect for swimming. The beaches on-island and at Phinney's Harbor are protected from large waves and surf and are great for families with children. After rinsing off in the enclosed outdoor shower, you can relax and savor the views from the deck or enjoy a game of ladderball, whiffleball or tennis on the island’s clay court.
Filled with light, all of the rooms have large windows, most with shoreline views of Buzzards Bay. The four bedroom, two bath home is fully air conditioned and sleeps 10 comfortably. The two upstairs bedrooms have queen size beds and the downstairs bedrooms have two and three single beds respectively. A full size futon is available in the family room and the house is equipped with a portacrib, high chair, nice walking/jogging stroller and backpack for carrying your young one. With two large living areas, you and your family can enjoy time together or spread out. The downstairs family room offers great water views as well as a flat screen TV with X1 Xfinity cable, DVD player, sofas and chairs.
With generous seating, including an outdoor dining table, 6 chairs, 3 chaise lounges and a 24 foot bench, the elevated deck offers spectacular views and easily accommodates a gathering. Enjoy a grilled meal using either the gas or charcoal grill. The lawn offers a beautiful, shaded sitting area overlooking the water with 6 more chairs and 2 chaise lounges. Enjoy a shaded hammock or the sky chairs suspended from the deck. The yard offers plenty of room for whiffle ball, ladderball, badminton or croquet.
In addition to beaches on Tobey Island, it is an easy walk to a free, public beach nearby at Phinney’s Harbor. Offering a public boat ramp, Phinneys Harbor also provides a fueling dock, free showers and restrooms and is home to Bourne Community Boating which offers summer sailing school and other boating opportunities for children and adults. Summer Sailing School for children is extremely popular and an easy 5 minute walk from the house.
The village of Monument Beach, one mile away, has a post office, ice cream shop, bakery, pizza parlor and a paddlers shop with rentals. Within three miles you can find the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League, two small grocery stores, the Cape Cod Canal bike path and visitor center, the Bourne Public Library, the carousel at the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum, hardware, seafood and liquor stores, and numerous restaurants including favorites such as the Lobster Trap and Chart Room. Falmouth, Woods Hole, Hyannis and Mashpee are all within a half an hour. If you wish to go further afield, the Whaling Museum in New Bedford is excellent as are the Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth and Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.
Tobey Island is quiet and secluded. Easy to reach and only 70 miles from Boston and a quick 4 miles from the Bourne Bridge, it is a world away from mini golf, tee shirt shops, roadside stands and traffic.
