Description

Welcome to our home! Our house is on a large piece of property with ample outdoor space- a generous lawn, perfect for a croquet game or a frisbee throw. There is a brick patio off the kitchen with a table and seating, and a wooden deck off the sunroom and middle bedroom for lounging. Wifi is everywhere on the property. There is a vegetable garden, a prolific apple tree, blueberry bushes, fresh herbs growing outside, an outdoor grill, and a large outdoor shower around back. There is a plethora of activity from birds and bunnies and in the early part of the morning you may see deer.

We are a family of artists and writers, and our home reflects this. Our library is extensive, and if you like books, you will feel at home here. Repeated book topics include gardening, yoga, history, building and carpentry, dancing, science writings, classic novels, and cookbooks. The house exudes a creative and settling energy with a quintessential Nantucket cottage vibe. There is music and a television with cable in the living room and master bedroom.

The house is entered through the kitchen, which has everything you need to prepare your own food and picnic supplies for eating outside and at the beach. Off the kitchen is one bedroom and a full bathroom. The kitchen, living room and dining room are all open so that everyone feels together when in this part of the house.

The hallway off the dining room has the laundry and shelves of towels and linens. The first room on the left in the hallway is the bunkroom, with two XL twin beds. The middle bedroom is across from the bunkroom and has a door which leads to the wooden deck. The master bedroom has a writing area, a television and is connected to the sunroom. The sunroom is a bright room for lounging and has a kitchenette for extra kitchen needs or early risers who want to make coffee in solitude. The second full bathroom is at the end of the hallway on the left. The bathroom also has a door which leads to the outdoor shower area so that after the beach you can go from your car to the outdoor shower and into the house to the bathroom and laundry area, very practical! The house has games, puzzles and art supplies and the shed has everything you need for the beach and playing outside. While I indicated the property limit was 6, there is room for 7 for the right group.

You do not need your car on island to enjoy your visit with us. The island discourages and limits cars on the island by limiting the number of boats carrying cars. Reservations for cars get booked up early in the season and don't worry if you missed it. You may luck out and get a ticket, or can always go stand by, renting cars on island is expensive but doable. Consider bringing or renting bikes, and hiring a local taxi driver to take you around to explore!

The house is about a ten minute walk to the center of Siasconset. Siasconset has two of the finest restaurants on the island, The Summer House and The Chanticleer. At the rotary (center of Sconset) is a post office, a liquor store, a market for food, ice cream and toys, and Claudettes. Claudettes has breakfast in the morning and serves delicious sandwiches all day. The beach in Sconset (down the street from the rotary) is spectacular untouched beauty. There is a playground across from the beach if you're coming with little ones. Bartlett Farms has a truck that comes out to Sconset with fresh veggies, salad greens, flowers, their home grown strawberries, etc.

The bus stop is at the Sconset rotary too and can take you into Nantucket town, the airport, etc. While 'Sconset and the island offer many lovely shops and restaurant options, the beauty of the island is the island itself. I know you'll enjoy all that is offered; the brewery, the live shows, ghost tours, galleries, and amazing fresh food everywhere.

I hope you are also coming to Nantucket because you marvel at this beauty. I hope you want to walk through our conservation land and go see our cranberry bogs. I hope you collect wildflowers and use our flower presses to make things. I hope you take the time to meet the locals. I hope every brilliant creative idea you have ever had comes bubbling up and you start your writing in our home. Come to visit, come to recharge, come to create.

My family and I had the absolute pleasure of staying in this lovely 'Sconset home for a week in early June. The pictures of the property and home cannot possibly do justice to what is quite possibly the most charming and inviting home on Nantucket! The minute we drove up to the house we fell in love – the house itself is a Nantucket "style" gray shingled cottage that is partially hidden from the street by mature trees and bushes. The house seemed to grow in size as we got out of the car and saw how expansive it really was – it was much larger than we expected. The house was perfect for our family of four – everyone had their own room, in fact the kids had their own "wing" – and in the evening we were able to close the door to their part of the house and continue the evening without disturbing them (and vice verse!) The tv reception was great, not that we did much watching but it was nice to have the option. My husband and I each picked up several books during our stay that piqued our interest (let's just say that one of us is now thinking about becoming a hobbyist bee keeper!). It felt very comforting to be surrounded by such obviously well loved books, art pieces, hand made tiles and beautiful rugs everywhere (we may have brought sand in from the beach but we never felt it thanks to the plush rugs!)
The description of the house as being a home to artists and writers is very accurate – the thoughtfully decorated rooms feel as if you are visiting a (very creative) close friend. The wooden floors and timbered ceilings and bathroom all added to the feeling of being in a magical space. There were more windows and glass doors than I could count and the house was filled with light at all times of the day….and the early risers did spot bunnies frolicking in the yard every morning! One of my favorite parts of the day was enjoying a glass of wine on the patio outside the kitchen while the kids had fun giving croquet a try. I think the kids would say one of their favorite parts of the house was the outdoor shower – they needed no convincing to wash off! The bathrooms both had deep tubs which were great for the kids – and adults!

Most mornings we walked to town (a few minutes if you're walking with the intention of getting the first cup of coffee and hot muffin at the General Store, or longer if you are lollygagging and ogling all the incredible houses and cottages along the way). Since we were there before the official start of summer, we had the beach to ourselves, apart from some people walking dogs and a few other lucky folks taking strolls. The house was very well stocked with beach towels galore, as well as extra bed linens and pillows. Having the washer and dryer made life so easy, throwing in a load or two of laundry meant we didn't travel home with sandy or wet clothes – which was great!

The kitchen had everything we could have possibly needed – and the dishes and glassware were all so unique and lovely. I usually travel with my own dishtowels on vacation since I've found rental seldom seem to have enough – but the kitchen was abundantly stocked with all the essentials and more. We picked up groceries at the Stop N Shop in the main town on our first day and cooked dinner most nights – there was even a huge lobster pot available which we will plan on using on our next stay.

I know the sea air and many activities and beach walks contributed to our all sleeping very soundly, lulled by the sound of the waves in the distance, but I will say I never slept better except in my own home. The mattress in the master bedroom was so comfortable I admit I pulled back the sheets to find out what model it was!

My husband and I both agree that our first trip to Nantucket won't be our last – and staying again in this amazing house will feel just like "coming home"!

Thanks for taking the time to learn about us. Our family first came to Siasconset in 1978 and it has been the heart of our family ever since. I work with children and have two grown children myself. We are based in Hoboken New Jersey.

What is special about this property?
Bounty. If I had to use one word to describe the property it would be bounty. Trees, bushes, flowers, growing food and apples dropping from the tree.

What is special about your town?
Our house is on a lovely street and is a perfect location for walking access to the bus stop and town and long walks on conservation land. Siasconset is famous for its rose covered cottages, the lighthouse, the bluff walk along Front Street.
