I’ll just say it: September is my favorite month on Cape Cod. The humidity breaks, the parking lots empty out, and the restaurants suddenly have open tables again. The water is still warm, the days are still long, and the Cape settles into a quieter, more relaxed version of itself. What locals call “Second Summer” — and it feels like a reward for those of us lucky enough to be here.
If you’ve only ever visited the Cape in July or August, September is going to surprise you. In the best possible way.

Three Things I’d Actually Do This September

1. Go to a Cape Cod Fall Festival
September is festival season on the Cape. Eastham Windmill Weekend is a favorite — the parade is full of local color and community spirit, exactly the kind of thing that reminds you why you love small-town New England. The Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival is a tradition celebrating the Cape’s cranberry heritage with artisan makers and live music. And the Yarmouth Seaside Festival is the classic end-of-summer sendoff — kite flying, craft fair, fireworks, and a parade.
And just around the corner in October: the legendary Wellfleet OysterFest — my absolute favorite fall festival on the Cape. I’ve gone for years, it’s become quite a scene, but it still has that wonderful local feel. Slurping oysters with just a bit of cocktail sauce genuinely puts the salt back in my veins. Don’t miss it.

2. Visit a Cranberry Bog
I’m a cranberry fan in every sense — I love the visual spectacle of the bogs turning that brilliant, saturated red in the early fall, I love cranberry bread, and yes, I’m the person who strings cranberries with popcorn to decorate the Christmas tree. So this tip comes from the heart.
The Cape’s cranberry harvest is one of the most spectacular and unexpected things to witness — growers flood the fields for wet harvesting and the bogs turn extraordinary colors. Check out the bog tours at Halls Cape Cod Cranberries in Harwich.
3. Take a Day Trip to Plymouth — and Consider Staying “Before the Bridge” Next Year
I’ve been to Plimoth Patuxet more times than I can count and I’m guilty of taking it for granted simply because it’s so close. Don’t make that mistake. The actors, the homes, the way you can genuinely imagine the early days — it’s a place everyone should visit at least once. (And yes, Plymouth Rock is famously unimpressive in person — but seeing it is still oddly moving!)
And here’s a local's tip: staying in Plymouth before you cross the bridge next summer means you completely avoid Cape traffic on your way down. Worth filing away for 2027 planning!
