Description

Description

This centrally located glassed-in house in the woods is set in the middle of our 2 acres of woods on a paved road, right next to 4000 acres of state forest. Permits are available to two beautiful beaches: Lambert's Cove Beach on the north side of the Island and Long Beach on the south side. There are many public beaches all within 15 to 20 minutes drive as well, including Owen Park, Eastville Beach, and South Beach, which is a popular 'wave' beach. Or drive up-Island to the beautiful clay cliff beach of Aquinnah or the fishing village of Menemsha.

The NEWLY AIR-CONDITIONED house is designed so that the summer sun is kept out despite having a two story wall of glass in the main area of the house. The effect is that your eyes naturally drift off into the woods, where you come to recognize various birds and squirrels and where they live. It is very peaceful. The screened-in porch is a favorite for reading and bird watching. Two patios, a porch, a breakfast bar, and a regular sit-down table in the house provide many dining locations. There is a fully equipped, full-sized kitchen renovated by Brad, who is a professional boat builder. You will see nautical touches throughout, from hardwood countertops to handmade cabinetry. The house has a full bathroom on the first floor, a half bathroom upstairs, and an enclosed private ''outdoor'' shower (our favorite) off the patio (just steps from the house).

The house is less than five minute's walk to the 4000 acre State Forest with bike paths connecting to most other bike paths on the island. Nearby places to bike (mostly on paths) include the State Forest, Tiah's Cove, the YMCA, Vineyard Youth Tennis, West Tisbury school playground and town tennis courts, Alley's, and the Field Gallery. Just a bit further along are Long Beach, Lambert's Cove Beach and the town of Vineyard Haven. A 2 minute walk takes the kids to a terrific neighborhood baseball diamond, and a 10 minute bike ride gets you to a frisbie golf course in the State Forest.

We may allow a dog. The area is perfect for it, with the State Forest next door. Please inquire.

Most linens are 100% cotton.

We will be living aboard our sailboat in Vineyard Haven Harbor during the summer and will be usually available by cell phone should the renter require anything.

    Cozy, tucked away home

We had a wonderful stay at Alice's home. It fit our family just right and has a great kitchen layout for meal prep and eating. The side room was a favorite for the kids as they played games and did crafts on the rainy days. We stayed for two weeks and look forward to more visits on the island at Alice's place. The host was easy to get in touch with and helpful regarding local resources.

From another rental site: ***** "This was our 2nd year renting the home and we enjoyed it even more than the first. The property is private and very quiet. It's conveniently located mid-island which affords easy access to bike trails to Edgartown and Oaks Bluff. The home has all amenities and Alice provided fresh eggs from the chickens in the back of the property. Property provides a step towards nature while providing all moderns amenities. We hope to make renting this home an annual summer tradition visiting Martha's Vineyard." ***** show more show less

From another rental site: ***** "I had a last minute work trip to Martha's Vineyard and was looking for somewhere on VRBO. From the moment I saw this house on the website, I knew it was going to be amazing! From the first phone conversation with the owner, the whole experience was beyond perfect! We rented the house for two weeks for a work trip to the island. Not only did the owner allow us to check in at 8 am, but she was beyond accommodating throughout our entire trip! The house is located along a dirt driveway off a road that has very little activity. Looking at a map, I didn't realize how isolated the property would be and expected airport noise. The only noise I heard was the sound of roosters on a neighboring property! The location could not have been more perfect!...The screen porch with vaulted ceilings was perfect for morning coffee, evening wine and lounging! The living room has vaulted ceilings and a huge wall of windows. The knotty pine details throughout the house were great. Outside off of the open porch is a door to the shower room, which has a skylight and dramatically high ceilings as well. It was perfect!... show more show less

From another rental site: ***** "I hope to come back to this house hopefully next summer. The location was ideally located in middle island and also near the forest giving us easy access to the bike lanes and privacy. The house was neat and clean when we arrived and furnished nicely with all the amenities like a grill, cable, etc. Each room had a fan, but some of us didn't even use them since it was cool enough in the evening. Alice made herself accessible to us if we needed her while we were there, but all went well. I'd recommend this house for a stay on a wonderful island." show more show less

Brad is a partner and Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway, in Vineyard Haven. They specialize in building wooden sailboats. Alice is a recently retired philosophy professor who runs a summer tutoring and test prep business. We and our two children enjoy spending time our sailboat in the summer months and are happy to turn our home over to weekly renters.

What is special about this property?
What we love most about our house is the privacy and the wildlife. While the house rests on only two acres, we feel completely surrounded by nature. We don't see other people's houses out the windows, just trees and squirrels and birds.

It is also great to have the 4000 acre state forest at our doorstep. We access the bike path by foot or bike just minutes from the driveway. From there we can go in lots of directions and explore. We have developed our favorite loops for 20 and 40 minute walks.

Of course, there is Lambert's Cove Beach. It is among the nicest one or two beaches on the island. As a renter you also have access to it. (Note that all renters in the town of West Tisbury are required to purchase their own beach pass at the West Tisbury School, just down the road.)

What is special about your town?
First, there is Lamberts Cove beach, which is a town beach. It is not accessible if you stay outside of West Tisbury. Also, we are at the center of the island, equidistant from most of the towns. Most locations on the island are no more than 15 minutes away. We are also a part of the ''up-island'' area of the island, which is quiet and rural, but we are not too far ''up island''. We can get to a supermarket in 10 minutes, for instance.
