Description

Description

Rustic ''camp-style'' lodging with stunning views overlooking Deep Bottom Cove (which is a finger cove off Tisbury Great Pond.) This simply furnished home, near the Trustees of the Reservation sleeps 6-8 people and is ideal for those who come to the Vineyard seeking a quiet retreat in a beautiful setting. Kayak or sail to South beach or swim in the private cove. The house is what Martha’s Vineyard used to be: a place to get away from it all. It’s quiet, secluded, unpretentious, and beloved.

The Camp at Deep Bottom Cove is an iconic and rustic waterfront Martha’s Vineyard rental. The bench on the deck looking over the pond is a natural gathering place, with one stunning sunset after another. Two different paths in front of the house takes you down to a private cove, where you can swim, sail, canoe, and kayak. Nature is all around… ospreys, swans, herons, and hummingbirds. Only a few other houses in distant view. Gorgeous sunsets and breathtaking stars at night.

The house has four bedrooms, including a separate master bedroom with bathroom. It sleeps seven in beds, plus a single blow-up mattress for additional guests. Small bathtub and outdoor shower looks out over the pond. There's a well-stocked kitchen - however, no dishwasher, coffee pot or microwave. Remember, this is one of the last remaining camps on Martha's Vineyard and rustic simplicity is the vibe. Think low carbon footprint - many guests dine by candlelight. Getting to the house is a charming adventure, you drive two miles down a dirt road. If you love privacy and want to have time off the grid, this is your place. However, if you want all the amenities of a modern home (aka dishwasher, microwave, posh furnishings, you'll be sorely disappointed). However, if you're seeking out killer sunsets, old-style natural Martha's Vineyard settings, you've come to the right place. read more show less

Truly Special Gem of a Property

The camp at Deep Bottom Cove is a truly special gem of a property. The house is rustic in the most charming possible way, it is an unforgettable property. It sits high on a hill and looks out over Deep Bottom Cove. What this means is amazing sunsets night after night. To get there, you drive two miles down a dirt road, so to say you are tucked away in one of the most private areas of Martha's Vineyard is an understatement. There's minimal lighting (which we loved - dinner by candle light every night). Furnishings are charming in this old-style Vineyard camp. Kitchen is well-stocked (no dishwasher, but that's part of the low carbon footprint vibe). There's an outdoor shower which looks out over the pond. We kayaked to the beach most days and wandered the paths on and around the Trustees of the Reservation on other days. show more show less

    Magical

I felt like I was in another world at Deep Bottom, it's rustic but comfortable and homey. I felt so relaxed I started drawing again, watching the hummingbirds, beach combing for wampum shells, and a perfect sunset every night.
Days spent with a kayak ride up the pond to see swans and herons, and swim in the warm water of the pond. Visited local craft and antiques markets, and rode a bike across to the Japanese Gardens on Chappaquiddick. Lunch in town and a little shopping. Would love to stay here again. show more show less

Rustic natural beauty in an authentic Vineyard gem

Classic, original, and vintage: The lodge is a completely different VIneyard experience than most people are used to. It is the perfect Vineyard house for me and my family. The lodge has been our MV retreat for almost 20 years now and is our favorite place on the Vineyard - and maybe the world. It is pure magic.

The lodge is a rustic, original house full of character and warmth. It is secluded in natural beauty, accessed by a 1.5 mile one-lane dirt road through the forest with pullouts for opposing traffic. The buildings are wood cabins. In true Vineyard style, the house was originally piped for gas lamps and a propane fridge but these have been replaced by thoughtful, basic electric fixtures. There is a gas oven and an electric fridge and a washing machine and dryer, but no microwave or dishwasher or AC. There is a working fireplace and plenty of windows to catch the breezes.

The deck! Once you spend a few minutes on the deck you'll probably change all your Vineyard vacation plans and not want to leave the lodge. Ever. Besides having a beautiful view over Deep Bottom Cove with only two or three distant houses in sight (and a rooster across the way crowing from time to time), you have ocean breezes, the sound of the surf on the South Shore, up close views of osprey and kingfishers circling and diving, and gorgeous sunsets. I heard loons calling one September and there are deer and otter tracks in the morning on the property's pond beach. On clear nights we lie in the hammock to stare at the Milky Way.

The lodge's position on the Deep Bottom Cove section of Tisbury Great Pond makes it perfect for activities. You can swim in the cove right there - a good option for little kids. You can also borrow the kayaks, canoe, or sailfish provided to paddle or sail your way around the pond, either up the secluded coves or across to the South Shore Beach adjacent to Long Point. Because you have to walk, sail, or paddle to get there, even on sunny summer days there are probably only a dozen or so families there boogie boarding, body surfing, or splashing with kids on the pond side.

The nearest stores are less than three miles away near the small airport. There is a very good fish store, a gourmet deli, and a fitness center. You can also access the bike path through the forest and use that to get anywhere on the island.

I can't say that this is the perfect spot for everyone, but it is for us.

    Beautiful location

After a half mile down a dusty road we arrived at the rustic house at deep bottom cove. We proceeded to spend the week reading, relaxing in the sun, and watching the birds and planes fly by. We loved that the biggest problem we faced here each day was what we would have for dinner. we loved swimming in the pond, and paddling down to the beach in the kayaks. the owners are updating the lighting system from gas to electric and have a new larger fridge this year than last. its a quick jaunt to see the houses in Oak Bluffs, to see the painted cliffs at Aquinnah, or to grab fresh fish from Larsons. The house is private and secluded, but with access to all the amenities the island has to offer. Each (sunny) day ended with some of the most spectacular sunsets we've ever seen. 10/10 would rent again and again. show more show less
