Fantastic!

What a wonderful place to holiday. The cottage is great and very well appointed - we had everything we needed and more! The gardens are magical and the peace and quiet a joy. It's in a great location and the rest of the island is very easily accessible. Mary was a great landlady and did everything she could to make our holiday memorable. We will certainly return. Thank you.

Magical!

We love Mary's place and plan our Vineyard trip around its availability. The cottage is lovely, peaceful and wonderfully maintained. We have been vacationing on the island for many years and have, unfortunately, encountered some of the older, more "worn" variations. By contrast, Mary's place is spotless, beautifully appointed, and ideally located near fabulous Lucy Vincent Beach. From the moment we stepped through the door, we knew that we had found "our place." Mary is a great host and someone we now consider a friend. A truly magical spot! show more show less

Our Home Away From Home

Mary’s guest cottage is like coming to our island home. As guests of the cottage for nearly 17 years, we look forward to returning each year to our up-island retreat. The cottage is quintessential Vineyard. The property and the gardens provide privacy and serenity we seek out on island. The cottage is perfectly maintained and each visit we anticipate any new amenities that have been added for our enjoyment. We appreciate Mary’s attention to detail to provide everything you might need to make your stay comfortable. Her care and consideration of her guests is unparalleled.

Quaint guest house

This property is very well appointed. The grounds are meticulously maintained. There's incredible hiking nearby. However, I would hesitate to call the cottage private. The driveway is shared with the main house. The groundskeeping equipment is stored under the guest cottage and regularly used by the homeowner. The garden behind the cottage requires a fair share of maintenance throughout the week. There is rarely a day you don't hear a mower or see a sprinkler turned on in the backyard. Overall, this is a gorgeous, well maintained house. But if you're looking for a romantic, undisturbed week in the woods where you can take an outdoor shower without possibly running into the homeowner mowing or watering the lawn, you may want to stay elsewhere. show more show less

Owner Response:

I am sorry this young couple was ultimately unsatisfied. My goal is for guests to have a terrific, restorative week and as my reviews testify, people do fall in love with the cottage, the grounds and the location. In fact, most of my guests return year after year and I'm always happy to welcome them back. Keeping the grounds beautiful does take tending and I strive to do it all when guests are away unless they're one of my "regulars" and they want to share notes on restaurants or activities. This is a guest cottage for a main house yet the mature planting plus the careful siting of both houses afford ultimate privacy -- both for the cottage guests and for us. I have always welcomed well-behaved dogs because I love dogs and I've found that people who travel with their dogs do so because their dog is relaxed when they're off to the beach or dinner. In fact, many guests return each season with their pooch. Unfortunately, this couple's dog was not happy on his own and I did have to ask them to protect the window ledges from the dog's jumping. Otherwise, except to welcome them and thank them for coming, we had no interaction with them.show moreshow less

Cozy Chilmark Cottage

On a whim and needing a break from the rat race, my husband and I were searching for a getaway. We found this lovely Chilmark cottage and read the many extraordinary reviews. We were hopeful it would all be true, and were not disappointed! The cottage could not have been more inviting. Every detail of the home makes you feel as though you've landed in the perfect place to relax and "leave your troubles behind." The cottage was stocked with everything promised and it was spotless too. The outside shower was awesome allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the vivid night sky on the Vineyard. The location was perfect. We loved the feeling of being tucked inland while still close to many beaches. We feel grateful to have found this treasure and plan to return soon. More great memories to come. Thanks, Mary!

Perfect MV Getaway

I have had the pleasure of staying in Mary's perfect guest cottage each of the last three years. The property is exactly as described and makes for an exceptional getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. The house is a perfect accommodation for my partner and me - it provides plenty of space for us to spread out, cook, and enjoy sunsets from the private deck. It is also very close to favorite beaches of ours, such as Great Rock Bight. My partner and I truly look forward to our time in Chilmark at the cottage year-round! show more show less

An Incredible Week on the Vineyard!

We spent our last week of summer vacation staying in Mary's beautiful home. The setting is everything we imagined with an up-island retreat. A quiet dirt road leads you to a private location surrounded by nearby hiking, running, and dog-walking trails. In the evenings it was only a short drive to watch the sunset at Menemsha or Aquinnah. The beach at Lucy Vincent is stunning and never too overcrowded, and Chilmark Store is close enough for any items we needed.

The exterior and grounds of the cottage have everything you need to relax: flower gardens, hammock, Adirondack chairs, grill, maintained yard, clothes line for wet towels, outdoor shower, and storage for bikes, etc. The interior of the cottage is bright and spotless with every possible convenience available. The rooms are spacious and there is more than enough storage to keep your belongings organized. What stood out for us is even though this is a weekly rental property, Mary provides her guests with the quality of products that one may have at home, beautiful rugs, artwork and decor, comfortable furniture and bedding, and every possible kitchen appliance and dining necessity to relax at home with meals if desired.

Upon arriving, Mary checked to see if we needed anything and offered information on our surroundings to help us enjoy our time to the fullest. She is very caring and considerate or her guests and our family hopes to return many times!

Quiet bungalow for two

We were looking for a quiet place to enjoy a relaxing vacation with our pup. Imagine our surprise when we opened the door to find a wonderful, homey, all you would need bungalow for two. It was very spacious, and the kitchen had all the amenities you would need to cook or grill. My boyfriend loved the outdoor shower.

We both enjoyed running the trails and looking at all the wildlife that was around.
The property was tucked out of the way, quiet and peaceful but convenient to everything.

We left there appreciating everything Mary does to make your stay there wonderful, and we will be returning soon.

Private oasis

Stayed at this wonderful little cottage last month just as the weather warmed and the sun came out-- it was perfect. Privately located on a quiet dirt road, it reminded me of the Vineyard before it was "discovered." There are miles of walking trails nearby-- no need to get in the car. There is a small but well stocked grocery store 5 minutes away.

In one direction and in the other, the beautiful fishing village of Menemsha-- the freshest fish and the best sunsets. The cottage was outfitted with everything needed for a comfortable stay-- quality appliances, gas grill on the deck-- even a gas fireplace to cozy up a cool evening. The kitchen had all the utensils one could need without the clutter of home.

This is a gem of a find -- so nicely decorated, well designed and maintained. Mary, the owner, was so pleasant to deal with and was eager to respond if something was needed. I can't say enough about this charming little place-- I'd love to return when the trees and landscaping are in full bloom.

I am a long-time Chilmark homeowner and while I welcome new guests, most of my vacationers have been returning year after year. Client testimonials speak to my care and attention to the properties, both inside and out. I believe the furnishing should be welcoming and comfortable and the kitchens should be ready for a resident cook. You will find everything well stocked and if I'm missing a spatula or a wine glass, I encourage my guests to let me know immediately so I can return with a replacement. In short, I want my properties to be of the same high quality I'd want on my vacation.

What is special about this property?
Both properties -- the guest house -- and the new, larger, two-bedroom house on a separate lot next door -- offer comfort, convenience and a sense of serenity. Each offers their own charms: the cottage is a perfect getaway for a couple or single person; it immediately invites you in, with a hammock beckoning for an afternoon nap. The new house has a more updated style and the layout offers privacy for a family of four or two couples, with separate baths. Both enjoy sunny decks for morning coffee and the new house has a magnificent post-and-beam screen porch. Whatever your needs, there are now two lovely, very unique homes to return to after your Island bike ride, beach picnic or Main Street shopping. And the best part? The Island may be hopping, but once you return to these properties, you'll immediately chill and relax.

What is special about your town?
Chilmark has the best of both worlds: the most sought-after town beaches limited to residents and renters and easy access to the fish markets or super markets. Menemsha, one of the last working fishing ports on the East Coast, is just a short drive or bike ride away and sunsets there are a must-do, whatever time of year. Personally, I think folks should consider the off-season which is low key, quiet and a perfect time to refresh and recharge.
