Description

Description

Roomy, sunny Victorian home at desirable Pilot Hill Farm with a working farm and a calm, private association beach on the North Shore of the Vineyard.

Osprey House is a modern, three bedroom classic featuring all the comforts of home and perched on the sunny side of Pilot Hill. This secluded island home is surrounded by outdoor decks, screened porches, well tended lawns and mature gardens with only a short walk down its country roads to its sandy beach and working farm. Guests can walk down to the red barn to pick up the delicious fresh eggs, arranged flowers, meats, and vegetables naturally-raised on the farm. Pilot Hill recalls the uncrowded, agrarian days of the Vineyard where guests can escape the hustle and bustle of the downtown Island towns for a modern, airy home nestled on its own three acre woodland setting.

The private Pilot Hill Association Beach is less than a mile walk or ride from the house along its tended country roads that wind past the hay fields and grazing cattle. Although secluded, Pilot Hill is only a couple miles from the ferry dock, shopping and bakeries of Vineyard Haven. Pilot hill is centrally located with golf courses like Mink Meadows and Farm Neck only a couple miles away and close access to island beaches, boat launches, and conservation lands in West Tisbury and Oak Bluffs.

Osprey House, named for its frequent avian visitors, features high ten foot ceilings, vaulted gabled windows, and mahogany entries with stained glass windows. The open floor plan is ideal for family gatherings and the numerous decks, patios, and lawns offer great outdoor spaces for barbecues, sports, or leisurely relaxing after a day at the beach or a trail hike. The well-equipped gourmet kitchen has modern stainless-steel appliances, granite counters and a sunny breakfast nook to enjoy morning coffee while taking in forest views and borders of blue hydrangea and privet. The sunny kitchen opens up to a formal dining area and continues into the octagonal living room, enabling guests to prepare meals while enjoying the company of friends and family. The dining room has a double French doors that opens broadly onto the sprawling mahogany deck and patio area where hummingbirds visit to enjoy the honeysuckle bushes. Special family meals take full advantage of the dining room’s long rosewood table that seats 10 or more guests. The spacious living room has a wood burning fireplace and multiple sofas and arm chairs and a large screen media center to watch movies or relax with a puzzle or book from the Osprey House library.

The first floor has a full bath with shower and a deck connecting to a double sized mahogany outdoor shower for family returning from a day at the beach. The laundry and linen room features a new washing machine, two dryers, and a desk with Apple computer connected to a house wide high speed wireless Internet network. Following the wide staircase up to the second floor, guests are greeted by two bedrooms, each with a queen bed and one twin, which share a full bath. Entering the Master Suite through the Victorian 8 foot Walnut door, guests are greeted by an octagonal master bedroom with an oversized king bed and a twin day bed all under a soaring 20 foot vaulted ceiling with multiple skylights. A private screened porch with chairs and a sleeping futon adjoin the bedroom and the master bath has a double sized shower. All bedrooms and the first floor have local air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep days and evenings cool and comfortable.

The outdoor grounds feature ornamental grasses, flowering trees and rose bushes, and a broad driveway at the end of a cul-de-sac with ample parking for cars and trailered boats. The two outdoor decks have numerous tables with umbrellas, chaise lounges for sunning, a hammock for lounging, and cushioned chairs to enjoy the Osprey House, a special “peace” of the Vineyard.

A hidden gem on Martha's Vineyard

Osprey House was everything as described and much, much more. This home is beautiful and lacks nothing in your accommodations, linens, utensils, dishes and cooking necessities. It is a home made for family entertainment with room for indoor and outdoor events. The private beach was awesome! We had it to ourselves most of the time.

The privacy we had at the house was a real treat and yet we were very close to the active parts of the island whenever we wanted a change of place. Believe me, we couldn't wait to get back to Osprey House and its quite and solitude when we did venture out. Glenn was the perfect host. He greeted us when we arrived and was always available to reply if we had any questions. We highly recommend Osprey House for the best vacation you could have on Martha's Vineyard. show more show less

Karen and Glenn Herosian have summered on Martha's Vineyard since childhood, and have a deep respect for its social traditions and unique beauty. We chose Pilot Hill Farm as our family's Summer Home and in 2001 we built Osprey House, a spacious, year-round home in a modern Victorian style designed by a well-known New England Architect We spend family time at Osprey House throughout the year and decided to start sharing some Summer weeks with guests a few years ago. We are professionals who live in a close suburb of Boston. We maintain high standards of comfort and cleanliness when offering our home to guests for their Island vacation. We welcome you and your family to our home and hope to make you one of our regular annual guests.

What is special about this property?
Pilot Hill Farm was a working Dairy Farm run by the Iselin Family since the 1940's and in the late 1970's was chosen to be a non-profit home development by the Vineyard Open Lands Foundation. Pilot Hill's unique low home density was a model for creating a small community of residents who appreciate the uncrowded, natural beauty of Martha's Vineyard. The working farm with its barns, gardens and Farmer's cottage has all been maintained and in use by a resident farming couple, Beldan and David Radcliffe, who live permanently on the farm and organically raise crops and cattle, and produce the most delicious eggs on the Island. These caring residents help maintain the country roads and private North Shore Beach that makes Pilot Hill Farm a special place for residents and guests alike.

What is special about your town?
Vineyard Haven is only a couple miles from Pilot Hill Farm, and it is the principal port for Martha's Vineyard, and is home to the Black Dog Sailing fleet of ships that have taken Island and visiting youth for sunset and week long sails for decades. The islands main boatyard remains busy and building and maintaining traditional wooden boats, while its idyllic harbors are deep and safe for visiting boaters. In nearby Lake Tashmoo, families still go out clamming in its salt water harbor for a variety of shellfish or go fishing for striped bass on famed Middle Ground off of the Pilot Hill Farm Beach. Hikers can access a number of nature trails and Golfers have Mink Meadows and Farm Neck golf courses offering spectacular Coastal views and challenging golf landscapes.
