Beautiful, well kept and recently renovated in the heart of Vineyard Haven, this historic house was built in 1905 by Captain George Eldridge who in 1875 first published the famous tide schedules still used by sailors today. On Main St, a short walk from downtown, “Fairtide” sits on a double lot with an expansive lawn and well kept garden.
A beautiful original living room with douglas fir flooring, fireplace, and piano leads to the library/TV room (65” smart TV), through the “puzzle room” to the dining and recently remodeled kitchen with coat closet, washer/dryer, and a common half bathroom. There is one downstairs bedroom with a double and twin with half bath off of the front hall. Four bedrooms are upstairs with two full bathrooms, a master bedroom with a king, a queen bedroom and two rooms with two twins each. The master bathroom can be private or shared as it off of a hallway to the master bedroom. Two outdoor showers ensure no waiting when rinsing off returning from the beach which is within walking distance, and outdoor patio dining gives you time to take in and appreciate the expansive property. Enjoy harbor views from two of the upstairs bedrooms and the library and yard and a short two block walk to town for shopping and restaurants. The garage has bikes, beach equipment, and everything you need for your family vacation. You will find that our home has the character and charm of a grand Captain’s house with modern amenities and a delightful spacious yard and garden.     In town captain's house

    We loved our rental at Fairtide. We had a lot of guests all month and found that there is plenty of space for 10 people, both in the living room for family games, and in the various places to gather- the TV room, the puzzle room, the living room, the dining room, the kitchen, the terrace, and the swing which affords a partial water view. The house has a wonderful antique charm, and at the same time, it is well equipped in terms of kitchen appliances and linens and everything we needed. We loved the oversized garden and the proximity to stores, the library, and the ferry. show more show less

    We were delighted with our stay- the photos don't do this house justice! What a beautiful home! The house had everything we needed as well as historic charm. We were a bit worried about whether the A/C would be adequate and had no issues there. Central upstairs and window units downstairs were plenty to keep cool through a hot month. Clean and well kept and Adrian was very responsive to our questions. Fabulous big yard and garden and proximity to town. What a gem! We can't wait to come back!!

    Adrian's home offers all you could ask for when visiting the Vineyard: clean, comfortable, with charm and character and a location that is ideal. His family home is lovely, authentic, spacious and airy. Upscale shops, restaurants and the ferry are all within a few blocks but the house's gorgeous gardens are peaceful. Cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough. We are hoping to come back soon!

    Perfect vacation home

    We had a fabulous stay at "Fairtide"! The house is so charming and well looked after as is the huge backyard and garden.

    Adrian was very responsive, friendly, helpful and easy to communicate with. We loved the proximity to town and the beach while also enjoying the peace and privacy of the big yard. Our kids could walk freely to the public library just two buildings up the street and loved the space trolley, inflatable boat and croquet on the lawn. The bikes and beach chairs, umbrella, etc… were all appreciated.

    I grew up spending my summers on Martha's Vineyard and my family finally purchased our home here in 2011 after renting since the 1940s when my grandparents first came to the island. I now split my time between the Vineyard and Nepal with my wife Sweta. I'm an artist and my stone carvings are hung throughout the house. In Nepal we work with American students on semester study abroad programs as well as in humanitarian work. Although the house is relatively new to us, it carries a rich history as a Captain's house and I am happy to be a steward of this beautiful property.

    What is special about this property?
    Many people remark that our home has a warm and inviting feeling and I attribute it largely to its history and the quality of its construction. Built by Captain George Eldridge, well known to anyone who grew up sailing around the Cape, the house has the character and charm of a grand Captain's house- douglas fir flooring brought by train from the west coast, architectural arches with elaborate moldings, stained glass window, etc... It is one of very few houses in town with a double lot and the yard offers a spacious sense of quiet and privacy for being so close to town. We all love to garden and the yard is well looked after with ample lawn for croquet. I love that we have such serene privacy while within walking distance to everything you need. I love walking the town beach to go get groceries!

    What is special about your town?
    Kids can walk to the public library without crossing the street, or down to the town pier and beaches. Restaurants and shops are just 2 blocks away.
