General orientation:
Nauset Heights, like Orleans itself, is prime area for saltwater options on the Cape -- with or without surf.

The Orleans Coastal Access map (url address below) presents the town's uniquely converging waterways -- flowing up, down, around and through a somewhat circular perimeter -- all accessed without having to navigate Route 6.
https://www.town.orleans.ma.us/sites/orleansma/files/file/file/coastal access guide.pdf

A sampling:
The Atlantic Ocean (miles of Nauset Beach*), Cape Cod Bay (Skaket Beach and Rock Harbor), Pleasant Bay, Meetinghouse and Areys Ponds, not to mention the vast waterways of Nauset Harbor* (Town Cove at Orleans center; Mill Pond* and Robert's Cove;* and town landings at Snowshore, Priscilla,* Asa's Landing, to mention some).

*5-10 minutes from the house (on foot). The rest, 3-5 miles (car or bike).

Freshwater, too. 3 options: Crystal Lake, Pilgrim Lake, and Baker's Pond. Nickerson State Park just over the Brewster line.

You don't have to go far to find typical Cape Cod vacation needs or activities. Orleans center is 3 miles from Nauset Heights––6-8 minutes by car depending on traffic. From food shopping, to bike or boat rental, to casual or fine dining, etc., etc. Even closer (1.5 miles), in the tiny hamlet of East Orleans you'll find fresh provisions, prepared food and snacks, a deli, butcher, bakery, cafe and post office, restaurants, wine/beer, pizza, ice cream, a craft shop and a clothing store. A list of suggested options in and near Orleans are available at the house.

Charming Cape Cod Cottage

From the minute I started communicating with Wendy, the owner, and from the first glimpse outside and inside her property, I knew it was going to be the most relaxing, enjoyable and accommodating vacation ever. Since Wendy actually lives here, when not renting it, the home is so well-organized, well-stocked with beach chairs, umbrellas, kitchenware, books abounding, different lamps for different lighting levels or tasks, really comfortable beds and bedding, just lots and lots of historic charm and modern creature comforts. The garden was inviting, with many areas to loll about in, a table for outdoor eating, a new and shiny grill, a hammock, chaise lounges for reading, and best of all, an outdoor shower. The neighborhood and its location so close to Nauset Beach and the more peaceful beach accessible through a small path, was not only convenient to all we needed, but quite beautiful. I would highly recommend staying here and can’t wait to return again next summer with my family for another perfect and restful week. show more show less

Lovely tenants, always welcome. During the week Mona and her family spent here, she let me know how happy they were with the house and the setting -- which is always reassuring to hear since that's the intended goal -- and now, these detailed comments! My sincere thanks.

Fantastic Stay

As a family of four, we've stayed in a number of the Nauset Heights rentals over the past 15 years and this place was one of the best. Great location and amenities along with a surprising amount of usable space with an open, inviting feel. Owner was super-responsive to any needs or issues leading up to and through the rental, providing prompt responses and thoughtful communication. Everything in the house is laid out with the renter in mind, with the effort to make your experience great being evident at every turn. Would definitely stay there again. show more show less

My sense all week long was that Galen and his family felt very at home -- a nice feeling for me as much as them, for sure! I hope they do indeed "stay there again."

Wonderful stay

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely home on Nauset Heights. This house offers everything you could possibly want, from great space to lovely yard to outdoor shower under the stars.

Wendy makes everything perfect on arrival with lovely touches including delicious linens and a bottle of great wine. The kitchen is fully stocked with anything you might need to cook a big meal for friends and family. The house is a stone’s throw from a private beach and the neighborhood is wonderful to walk around. I’ve rented on the Cape for 30 summers and this is the nicest house I’ve been in by far. show more show less

Wow, thank you Jennifer. Such incredibly kind words. I'm always pleased to have contributed to a memorable vacation stay, but a best out of 30 summers rating is definitely a first. I'm glad you found and enjoyed our local stretch of Nauset Beach. While not literally "private," I agree that it feels that way thanks to the wide, largely empty expanse of sand and water awaiting Nauset Heights beach-goers on foot.

Of course we came back!

An even better week this year with the weather cooperating a bit more. We had an enjoyable week in this comfortable, well-equipped home. Clean and organized with plenty of seating and lots of room to play games, read or watch movies when not at the beach. We enjoyed the addition of the table with the umbrella and seating out back. The path to walk to and from the beach is a favorite. A beautiful and quiet area of the Cape, yet a quick jaunt to restaurants and stores.

It's lovely to have tenants like Joe and his family come back and enjoy the house and its surroundings once again. There's a sense of familiarity in both directions, which for me is heartening (and validating!).

A cottage with personality

If you're looking for a quintessential Cape Cod vacation then this is the place for you. The house has fabulous nooks and crannies for reading, game playing, TV watching or napping. This isn't a high end, granite counters don't touch anything kind of house. It feels like you're staying with your favorite Aunt who's thought of everything. We all fought over the outdoor shower and discovered the joy of late night showers under the stars. Easy walk to the beach (we're all adults though) and we caught some terrific sunsets on the bay side. Wendy, the owner, couldn't be more accessible or helpful. The entire experience was a pleasure! show more show less

"...the joy of late night showers under the stars..." What a brilliant idea - never thought of it, will definitely try it out, and perhaps I'll add it to the household guidelines, too! My thanks to Sophia and her family for enjoying the place so much and so well.

A great week at this home!

We had a great week at this roomy, comfortable and very clean home. All amenities were great. Cozy, yet room for everyone to spread out. Outside areas wonderful as well. As this has truly been someone's "home" for a generation or two, it had character and a homey feel. This house was so "easy" to stay in for a week (especially with not so perfect weather), laundry, outside shower, comfortable beds, fun and easy walk to beach, plenty of parking. We would come back in a heartbeat!

My new policy in 2017 is to reply to all reviews -- although it may get repetitive, because, so far in my rental history, I have rarely encountered tenants I wouldn't want back. And so I thank Joe and his family for their stay and their appreciation and wish them back anytime.

A Nauset Gem

For families traveling with young children, choosing a rental and going on vacation more broadly can be stress-inducing. However, staying in this home was anything but. The house has a great layout, with lot of space. It has a wonderful cottage-feel while not seeming overly cramped.

We spent just one week and left wishing we could have stayed the whole summer. The location is just wonderful. It is an easy walk to Nauset Beach or Priscilla's Landing and a short drive from Skaket Beach. The house is on a quiet, somewhat secluded road, which is lovely both in the mornings for our bike rides and in the evenings when we sat outside watching the sunset.

Inside, the kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed to make meals. There were plenty of beach towels, chairs, and beach umbrellas available for our use on our outing, and every night we made use of the grill and outdoor eating area. Laundry and wi-fi are included.

The owner is just delightful. She is responsive, easily accessible, and well-organized. Upon arrival, a binder with helpful information awaited us. This made getting acquainted with the house much easier. Overall, it was a wonderful trip and I hope to bring my family back next year!

Perfect vacation home

We have stayed in this lovely home for three summers in a row. The location is fantastic -- walkable to the ocean, to a boat dock, and to a beautiful cove. The owner lives in the house in the non-summer months, so the kitchen is stocked with everything needed for cooking. She also makes available beach chairs, beach towels, linens, and beach toys (as well as board games and puzzles). She has been wonderfully communicative and responsive. There is a lovely yard with a hammock. We have three young children, and this has been an ideal home away from home for our annual Cape week. show more show less

In 2013 I joined the WeNeedaVacation.com community of homeowners who like me prefer to deal person-to person with summer vacationers looking for their ideal spot on the Cape via the Internet.

We NeedaVacation.com offered vacationers Internet access without required booking fees and I liked that. Their website connects rental properties to vacationers and vacationers to rental properties. The booking process is handled by the homeowner or an agent/manager, and fee policies depend on who this is.

My policy calls for rent with no added fees. This feels fair and reasonable. A lot of families reach me via the WeNeedaVacation.com link. This typically is a very pleasant process and more often than not it leads to a signed lease with dates and terms assured.

What is special about this property?
It's hard to be objective about my childhood summer home, or annual go-to destination with my own growing family, or primary residence now. The best of the past, the best of the present, always subjective.

Perhaps the better gauge is the reaction of our summer tenants--in website reviews or spontaneously (texts and emails)--from the simple declarative, ''We've arrived and the house is great!'' to, ''We see it as our own summer home to come back to'' (and they do); or, ''Just the place I needed to be with my family this week--thank you.'' The very definition of special.

What is special about your town?
Orleans has the distinction of being a saltwater fulcrum -- a convergence flowing up, down, around and through -- all accessed within the town's somewhat circular perimeter without having to navigate Route 6.

The Orleans Coastal Access map (url below) presents a full picture of our waterways and access points:

Nauset Heights is surrounded by several of these saltwater options -- all within an easy walk of the house. Described under 'Description' along with a sampling of the town's other attributes.
