Description

Reopening 2021 with Covid–19 measures in mind: the pandemic kept us here in our home (and thus vacationers out) in summer 2020 and we are pleased to be back. For the benefit of our renters and our cleaning crew, a 24-hour buffer period between departures and arrivals allows for airing out and deep-cleaning protocols.
*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
WALK TO SALTWATER IN ANY DIRECTION
On Nauset Heights, you can walk to saltwater beaches via back roads and dune paths in a matter of minutes. This includes Nauset Beach itself and beaches to its north, including ocean, coves, inlets, all within about half a mile or even less.

MEMORIES PAST AND PRESENT
Still held and treasured by the same family who built it many summers ago, this classic Cape has kept up with changing times (expanded and updated) while staying true to its original character. Open, bright and airy, and with cozy spaces too, the property offers today’s key amenities in an attractive and comfortable setting.

1ST FLOOR––SHARED OPEN-PLAN SPACES
The original, multifunctional Living/Dining/Kitchen offers painted paneling, vintage wicker, antique brick against warm pine patina––and plenty of light and air thanks to six windows on three sides. The Kitchen has gas stove (new in 2021), storage and worktop island, quartz counters, deep sink, ample prep space, an array of appliances large and small; and adjacent Laundry/Pantry room. The space opens into a contemporary Family/Living room with 8 oversized windows on 3 sides, raised ceiling (ceiling fan and A/C unit), and side entry point.

1ST FLOOR PRIVATE QUARTERS (via enclosed hallway):
Wing BR (Queen) and Bunk BR (standard Twins), with A/C units. Bathroom (tub/shower combo). Wing BR has exterior door to the enclosed outdoor shower and rear yard area.

2ND FLOOR PRIVATE QUARTERS (via enclosed stairway):
King BR. Small annex room. Open common area with Double Divan. Bathroom (shower). Suitable for couples or individuals seeking a private ‘suite’ set-up or for family sharing.

OUTDOORS: A sunny patio behind a privacy hedge for lounging, grilling and eating. Generous yard space surrounding. Enclosed outdoor shower and secluded lounging area to rear. The house sits on half an acre, set back from a rural road. It faces westerly, across from 10 acres of natural habitat running to Mill Pond.

GENERAL ORIENTATION: Nauset Heights, like Orleans itself, is a prime area for saltwater options, miles of ocean beach and areas along the perimeter of Nauset Harbor. Orleans center is 2.8 miles from Nauset Heights (6–8 minutes by car, depending on traffic). Cyclists can access the Cape Cod Rail Trail and ride to Brewster or Wellfleet. Even closer (1.5 miles), the hamlet of East Orleans with deli, butcher, fish market, bakery, coffee, wine/beer; breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

Just what we needed

Our family have been spending our annual summer vacation on the Cape for years and have always chosen to stay some place different each year for diversity. After our stay at Wendy"s home, we may need to break that rule. It was so comfortable and well laid out. Traveling with teenagers, we definitely had different sleep patterns and the segregation of the two sleeping areas allowed us to be able to roam freely in the large common area without having to act like mice. This living space is also perfect for our daily game and jigsaw puzzle activities and the private back yard is ideal for morning coffee or relaxing after a day at the beach.

Further, we found the Nauset Heights neighborhood supremely located next to one of the most popular ocean beaches yet without all the traffic and congestion found just a couple miles away. Being able to walk to both the ocean and cove beaches was so convenient. If it wasn't for the variety of local restaurants beckoning us, we probably would not have gotten in the car at all.

What a tranquil vacation. Hopefully we will be able to stay there again.

Great Vacation Week!

Our family of six stayed for a week and couldn't have enjoyed our vacation more. The home was roomy, well equipped and most importantly very clean. It's about a seven minute walk to a beautiful ocean beach and a short ride to town where all of the restaurants and shops are located. Wendy was easy to work with, communicated often, was very attentive and truly seemed to care about us having a wonderful week....the bottle of wine and Cape Cod chips were a much appreciated welcome gift as well.

Perfection!

This house was everything we were looking for and more! It’s in the best location on the Cape, close to other towns if you do want to explore, but also right on Nauset Beach and close to Skaket if you don’t want to leave Orleans. The house itself had everything you could want or need and was immaculate. We wanted a house with character and this one had it, plus the outdoor shower and yard couldn’t be beat! We didn’t have the opportunity to meet Wendy, the owner, but felt like we knew her and even though it wasn’t her responsibility, she took great care of us. Can’t wait to go back!! show more show less

Samantha knows how to vacation! She booked a two-week stay for her family (two sons) and made some key plans well in advance of arrival. I’m delighted the place served them all so well. They in turn were ideal summer residents and the place was well cared for throughout. The intention for a return stay next summer is sincerely welcome and I hope it pans out.

Charming Cape Cod Cottage

From the minute I started communicating with Wendy, the owner, and from the first glimpse outside and inside her property, I knew it was going to be the most relaxing, enjoyable and accommodating vacation ever. Since Wendy actually lives here, when not renting it, the home is so well-organized, well-stocked with beach chairs, umbrellas, kitchenware, books abounding, different lamps for different lighting levels or tasks, really comfortable beds and bedding, just lots and lots of historic charm and modern creature comforts. The garden was inviting, with many areas to loll about in, a table for outdoor eating, a new and shiny grill, a hammock, chaise lounges for reading, and best of all, an outdoor shower. The neighborhood and its location so close to Nauset Beach and the more peaceful beach accessible through a small path, was not only convenient to all we needed, but quite beautiful. I would highly recommend staying here and can’t wait to return again next summer with my family for another perfect and restful week. show more show less

Lovely tenants, always welcome. During the week Mona and her family spent here, she let me know how happy they were with the house and the setting -- which is always reassuring to hear since that's the intended goal -- and now, these detailed comments! My sincere thanks.

Fantastic Stay

As a family of four, we've stayed in a number of the Nauset Heights rentals over the past 15 years and this place was one of the best. Great location and amenities along with a surprising amount of usable space with an open, inviting feel. Owner was super-responsive to any needs or issues leading up to and through the rental, providing prompt responses and thoughtful communication. Everything in the house is laid out with the renter in mind, with the effort to make your experience great being evident at every turn. Would definitely stay there again. show more show less

My sense all week long was that Galen and his family felt very at home -- a nice feeling for me as much as them, for sure! I hope they do indeed "stay there again."

Wonderful stay

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely home on Nauset Heights. This house offers everything you could possibly want, from great space to lovely yard to outdoor shower under the stars.

Wendy makes everything perfect on arrival with lovely touches including delicious linens and a bottle of great wine. The kitchen is fully stocked with anything you might need to cook a big meal for friends and family. The house is a stone’s throw from a private beach and the neighborhood is wonderful to walk around. I’ve rented on the Cape for 30 summers and this is the nicest house I’ve been in by far. show more show less

Wow, thank you Jennifer. Such incredibly kind words. I'm always pleased to have contributed to a memorable vacation stay, but a best out of 30 summers rating is definitely a first. I'm glad you found and enjoyed our local stretch of Nauset Beach. While not literally "private," I agree that it feels that way thanks to the wide, largely empty expanse of sand and water awaiting Nauset Heights beach-goers on foot.

Of course we came back!

An even better week this year with the weather cooperating a bit more. We had an enjoyable week in this comfortable, well-equipped home. Clean and organized with plenty of seating and lots of room to play games, read or watch movies when not at the beach. We enjoyed the addition of the table with the umbrella and seating out back. The path to walk to and from the beach is a favorite. A beautiful and quiet area of the Cape, yet a quick jaunt to restaurants and stores.

It's lovely to have tenants like Joe and his family come back and enjoy the house and its surroundings once again. There's a sense of familiarity in both directions, which for me is heartening (and validating!).

Family getaway

Highlights of our week:
A warm and well equipped kitchen and open floor plan for our family of 6 adults to relax together.
Comfy, welcoming and very clean.
Great communication with owners - we knew we would be happy before we even got there
Walking to the beach whenever and swimming in the waves.
The outdoor shower
So near to the beach but within an easy drive to downtown and all the necessities.
We would go back in a heartbeat!

A cottage with personality

If you're looking for a quintessential Cape Cod vacation then this is the place for you. The house has fabulous nooks and crannies for reading, game playing, TV watching or napping. This isn't a high end, granite counters don't touch anything kind of house. It feels like you're staying with your favorite Aunt who's thought of everything. We all fought over the outdoor shower and discovered the joy of late night showers under the stars. Easy walk to the beach (we're all adults though) and we caught some terrific sunsets on the bay side. Wendy, the owner, couldn't be more accessible or helpful. The entire experience was a pleasure! show more show less

"...the joy of late night showers under the stars..." What a brilliant idea - never thought of it, will definitely try it out, and perhaps I'll add it to the household guidelines, too! My thanks to Sophia and her family for enjoying the place so much and so well.

A great week at this home!

We had a great week at this roomy, comfortable and very clean home. All amenities were great. Cozy, yet room for everyone to spread out. Outside areas wonderful as well. As this has truly been someone's "home" for a generation or two, it had character and a homey feel. This house was so "easy" to stay in for a week (especially with not so perfect weather), laundry, outside shower, comfortable beds, fun and easy walk to beach, plenty of parking. We would come back in a heartbeat!

My new policy in 2017 is to reply to all reviews -- although it may get repetitive, because, so far in my rental history, I have rarely encountered tenants I wouldn't want back. And so I thank Joe and his family for their stay and their appreciation and wish them back anytime.

The house has been available for summer vacationers for about 12 seasons, the past 8 through weneedavacation.com, whose model I like because vacationers can inquire and book directly with me without being charged third-party fees for doing so. Direct interaction like this also proves an effective way to communicate needs and expectations and ensure they are met.

What is special about this property?
I am definitely biased about this place as my childhood summer home (now year-round) –– but I have 'objective' proof, too, from vacationers who have stayed here. Two of my favorite messages: in a text on arrival, ''We've arrived and the house is great!'' and in a note on departure, ''We see it as our own summer home to come back to...'' Special indeed!

What is special about your town?
Orleans has the distinction of being a saltwater fulcrum––a convergence flowing up, down, around and through––all accessed within the town's somewhat circular perimeter without having to navigate Route 6.
The Coastal Guide to the Town of Orleans presents a full picture of our waterways and access points and can be found online.
