Description

Description

The space:
There are two houses on the property - both of mid-century modern design. The main house (house for rent) was designed and built in the early 1970s by my parents. It is located in a secluded and wooded area of Orleans on a point of land with water access (both fresh and salt) within a 1/4 mile from the house. It is an ideal area for canoeing, paddle boarding, or kayaking. Kayaks and paddle boards can be rented locally at Goose Hummuck (in Orleans - across from Stop and Shop) or you are welcome to bring your own. The second unit on the property is a smaller unit (occupied by me the owner). The house is nestled among several acres of wooded land for optimal privacy.

The main house has a large living room with a high pitched ceiling and a loft space (the loft will not be accessible to guests due to danger/liability issues), 2 full baths and an outdoor shower, a fully equipped kitchen, a TV room, and a dining room. The house is surrounded on all sides with outdoor walkways and large spacious decks with tables and deck furniture to enjoy a meal outside. There is a hammock in the front yard shaded at different times of the day. The TV room, kitchen, and living rooms have high cathedral ceilings with clearstory windows optimizing the cross-ventilation air flow throughout the house. Each room in the house has a sliding glass door with access to an exterior deck.

The main house has 3 bedrooms: the master bedroom has a king bed, the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms have a queen and 2 twin beds respectively. There is a sitting room/TV room adjacent to the master bedroom and can double as a bedroom for a 7th occupant with more limited privacy than the other formal bedrooms. The couch can be used as a bed for a small child (it is not a sofabed).

Please Note:
This is an ideal listing for those who want to unplug in a peaceful and private wooded setting with a unique design equipped with easy water access. It is not a good fit for those wanting state-of-the-art, high-tech amenities and new pristine furnishings.

Sadly, no pets (other than those authorized by the host). An additional $100 pet cleaning fee will be charged for any authorized pets to ensure the house is cleared of all pet fur and dander so that anyone checking post your stay with an allergy can have a happy and heathly vacation experience.

Please note: The house does not have AC. I provide standing rotating fans for all of the bedrooms and additional fans for all other rooms in the house. Additionally, the house design lends itself to ample cross ventilation.

Linens and towels are not provided as a part of the rental. You are welcome to bring your own or I can connect you with a linen rental service I recommend.

Guest access to nearby beaches and landings:
Pilgrim lake - freshwater lake (5 min walk): guests have access to a small private beach only for neighborhood residents on Pilgrim Lake, a glorious place to swim and where kids and and parents alike can enjoy some solitude away from the crowded beaches.

There are two salt water creeks and a bay surrounding the neighborhood area. Guests can access 2 bay landings within 5 min walk from the property for beautiful vistas and/or an ideal place to launch a canoe, kayak, or paddle board. It is possible to swim in these areas as well (I typically do lap swims throughout the summer months) but please note the area is marshy and the bottom is a bit mucky at low tide.

The house is located on a network of private dirt roads with close proximity to the center of town (2 miles). It is located 3.5 miles from both Nauset Beach (ocean) and Skaket Beach (Cape Cod Bay).

I provide beach chairs, an umbrella, and a boogie board for guests to use. The kitchen is fully equipped for making meals. Additionally, there is a Weber gas grill.

We arrived at Elizabeth's place just in time to experience the heavy winds and rain of hurricane Irma. Elizabeth checked in with us, often, to make sure that we were ok and that the house was secure during this extreme weather. We enjoyed chatting with her and she is a exceptional host, the best we have experienced. A great communicator Elizabeth was readily available to answer any questions we had. This house is set up for family living with comfortable spaces, good storage, filled with natural light from large sliding doors and sky lights. We cooked most of our meals at home, found the kitchen very user friendly and often used the outdoor grill. Dinner on one of the many deck spaces was appreciated. It is surprising how isolated the property feels, and then to realize that you are so close to town, beach, restaurants. From the house it is a easy walk to the lake for our 5 year old who had a fantastic time swimming and playing in the sand. This house is filled with vintage books, games and well loved comfortable furniture. If you are looking for a sleek, modern home, this place is not for you. We enjoyed staying at Elizabeth's place and will be looking for this listing the next time we plan a Cape vacation! show more show less

We had a wonderful experience at Elizabeth's place. We were a total of 5 adults and the layout of the house provided both common spaces for us to eat and relax together as well as room for us to be separate. We loved having two decks with plenty of seating. There is a nice gas grill and the outdoor shower is perfect after the beach. The house is tucked away in the woods and quiet. The location was great for us and we rode bikes to the beach and the nearby lakes. Having Elizabeth staying on the property worked out well for us—we had enough privacy and it was nice to have her close by if we had any questions. The description is very accurate. The design and decor of the home make it the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of the area. show more show less

Description in the listing is accurate, but it is hard for words or pictures to capture how delightful the space and surroundings are.

Quiet house in a wooded area away from the beaten path. The layout is something to be experienced. Elizabeth was a great hostess and quick and precise with her communications. Can't wait to return!

A serene, scenic, peaceful setting nestled in nature, you can walk/ run/ bike to the water or nearby lakes. For two of us the space felt like a retreat in unique Orleans. The house has beautiful natural light, spacious and we chose it for the mid- century modern architecture. Very private, clean with practical amenities all on one floor, surrounded by a deck where you can step out and enjoy the fresh air, morning coffee , what you would expect of the Cape. Our host left great instructions for the area and personally helped us choose some of our outings. Elizabeth is kind and knowledgeable of the area, communications were very clear. We plan to return! show more show less

Elizabeth's house is a really special piece of architecture, and we had a wonderful week there. the neighborhood is lovely, with short walks to the lake and bay, and the house itself is very connected to the cape cod landscape. Everything was there that we needed and it was a truly relaxing week.

The house is very special (a true architectural gem) and in a perfect location - just a few min to all beaches and lakes. Elizabeth is an incredible host. We loved our stay and we can't wait to return soon.

I am based in Oakland, CA and Orleans MA. I am a an Educational Therapist. I work with students in Language Arts and Executive Function supporting them to leverage their own strengths in their learning process. I enjoy surfing, dancing, swimming, biking, and I am generally a warm and joyful person. I grew up in Orleans and know the local community and area well. I appreciate welcoming and sharing all the area has to offer with guests. My entire family resides in coastal MA.

During your stay:
I live in the guest house on the property. I minimize my interaction with guests beyond getting you settled and oriented. I have my own private entrance and make myself scarce during your stay. I have a well trained large dog.

What is special about this property?
My house is nestled in one of the last wooded areas of Orleans. The point is a network of dirt roads surrounded by water on all sides. There are several coastal access points within a few min walking distance from the property - both fresh water lake and salt water rivers and bays. The house is private and has ample indoor and outdoor space for families to enjoy time to come together and to spread out and enjoy alone time.
