Description

Description

This classic Nantucket-style colonial home on a wooded bluff overlooks the Old Silver Beach estuary. The gracious foyer leads to an elegantly furnished living room with its wide-planked floors and black granite gas fireplace, reminiscent of a sea captain's home, with art and furniture from travels afar. Large windows look over a treed front patio and a brick back yard patio with water views.

The dining room seats eight with French doors leading to the back yard patio and outside dining area. The fully equipped kitchen opens to the dining room. The first floor has a large bedroom with queen size bed adjacent to a fully renovated bathroom. A carpeted staircase leads to a bright, second floor family/TV room with beautiful water and garden views. Decorated as an African safari lodge, the family room offers the guest a unique experience. The second floor has three bedrooms (master with king; third bedroom with queen and twin; fourth bedroom/office with twin); and a recently renovated bathroom. Laundry facilities are in the basement. There is an outdoor shower for use when returning from the beach. The wooded property provides maximum privacy.

The home is located a 5 minute stroll to one of Cape Cod's premiere beaches, Old Silver, with its white sand, shallow, calm and warm waters on Buzzard's Bay. Adjacent to the house is conservation land with horse trails, cranberry bogs, a bird sanctuary, two ponds, and the Shining Sea bike path to Woods Hole. Shopping, dining and entertainment are close by, and Falmouth Village is 15 minutes by car. Easy access from Bourne Bridge makes exploring the area convenient.

We came across the McWilliam's home after we got in contact using the Home Exchange network. They came to our house in London and we to theirs on Cape Cod. I think it would safe to say, we got the better end of the deal.
Cape Cod is an affluent, upmarket part of the world with many nice house to choose from. So what make their home so special?
    A number of things.
Firstly, the location. The house is on a quiet street just north of Falmouth. It is a short walk to Silver Beach. Particularly important if you've got kids. There is a hotel and restaurant there, so you can get refreshments. Falmouth itself is a small charming town and just a short drive away.
Secondly, the position of the house itself. Although it is on a street with other houses, it is somehow tucked away behind trees. This gives you a wonderful feeling of seclusion. At the back is a creek and no other buildings, so it feels like you could be in the middle of nowhere, even though you are quite obviously not.
The McWilliams spent a lot of their working life in Africa and the house is done out in Colonial style with genuine African artefacts. This, together with the feeling of seclusion, makes you feel like you could be in the wilds of Africa, even though you are actually quite firmly in Massachusetts! I suspect that was what attracted them to the property in the first place.
We were lucky enough to meet up with John and Joanna and found them to be kind, interesting people. Given half a chance, we would willingly swap with them again.

John and Joanna McWilliam have lived in various countries in Africa for almost 20 years and in India for four years. Their house reflects their travels with African furniture and art as well as Indian. The house is akin to a ship captain's home with treasures from around the world.
The McWilliams have rented their home in the summer for many years and there have been repeat visitors, as the home provides a warm, hospitable place for a family to relax and enjoy the Cape. Just being in their home, you are transported to far off places; this is besides the treasures found on the beach and marsh that are next door.
Seclusion is another feature of this home. While in a neighborhood of other beautiful homes, the property is fully-treed and secluded from neighbors. It is a quiet retreat, with wonderful views of the estuary and bird life, including a resident osprey. The property abuts a conservation area with trails to cranberry bogs, the historic Bourne Farm, and a close by horse stable where horses can be rented.. A herring ladder ''run'' is nearby and flows into the estuary. You can walk to the bike path for those who wish to enjoy cycling along the marshes and sea to Falmouth and Woods Hole.
