Description

Description

This is a quirky farmhouse, circa ~1865. It has not been kept in the original style but does retain much of the charm of an old home. If you are seeking a shiny, modern place, this is not for you! On the other hand, if you like colors and art and vintage things, and don't need everything to be perfectly matched, you will likely be very happy here.

This is a vacation place for up to four adults, with two bedrooms. The house is not suitable for children. We will consider requests for well-behaved dogs.

We are a Sunday changeover property. We have found traffic overly challenging on Saturdays and so have decided that the alternative day works better for our visitors. Check in is 3 pm on Sunday afternoon, and check out is 9 am on Sunday. If we are ready for you earlier than 3, we will text you.

Our home includes two bedrooms and a full bath upstairs. One bedroom has a queen bed, close to the floor (below the windows- see photo) and one has a full sized bed. There are mini split air conditioning units in both rooms (and we also have a number of portable fans if you prefer the Cape's fresh air). There is a large bookcase in the upstairs hallway filled with books- please help yourself.

Downstairs you will find a living room area as well as a smaller den with a television. There is a wireless printer on our wifi network that you are free to use. You will also find cloth placemats and napkins, and a lovely old oak dining table with four oak grange hall chairs.

You will also find a small but very well-equipped kitchen containing a refrigerator/freezer, natural gas range/oven, dishwasher, large toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, Vitamix and Nutribullet blenders, juicer and food processor. There are also many high quality pots and pans to choose from as well as a wide variety of gadgets such as wine vacuum, plane grater, Mouli grater, cherry pitter, baking dishes, etc. Good, sharp knives and an interesting and eclectic collection of dishes, glasses and flatware. A separate spigot on the sink provides purified water, for drinking or cooking. There is even a vintage ice cream maker - buy some fresh peaches or berries - it's always a fun group event! You're also welcome to help yourself to an extensive selection of spices and any dry goods you find.

Also on the first floor is a colorful half bath with a bookcase and a peek at the garden. Just outside of the big room, there is a simple but lovely patio area filled with plants where you can watch birds, chipmunks and dragonflies all day long, if that suits you. You might like to take the yoga mats (there are four) outside and do some stretching. It is very green and overgrown - we try to maintain areas of natural habitat for our local fauna. You may also view the patio area from the larger living area, if you prefer to be inside.

In the patio area, you will also find a spacious outdoor shower where you might see tiny frogs if you are lucky (tree frog or wood frog). Adjacent to that area, we've provided a (propane) barbecue grill. Inside, in the laundry closet, you'll find a vintage croquet set and some badminton gear. There are also playing cards and some board games, including Cranium and dominoes.

The house is full of art and books. We have wifi but no cable. There is, however, a smart television in the den as well as an older television with VHS and DVD players in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Plus some great movies for you to watch, if you wish. There is also a bluetooth Bose speaker on the first floor.

We provide all towels and bed linens- 100% cotton, of course. There is a pile of beach gear, including a vintage beach blanket, four beach towels, a beach tent, sunscreen, bug spray and a small cooler. There are two bicycles which you are free to use. There is a clothesline for beach towels and bathing suits, as well as anything else you wish to dry. There is also a new washer and dryer on the first floor.

We run HEPA filters in the house and use a HEPA vacuum cleaner. I am chemically sensitive so we are very cautious in our use of cleaning products. Still, with COVID, we are taking extra care. Please let us know if you have any specific sensitivities or needs.

You may have noticed that we participate in weneedavacation.com’s Green Initiative. In addition to purified water, eco-friendly cleaning products, LED lighting, bamboo t.p., recycling, etc…. both of our toilets have dual flush options to conserve water usage.

There are two parking spaces available for your use.

The property is very close to Harwich Center, including the Harwich Cultural Center, Brooks Library and Brooks Park - where you'll find Cape League baseball, concerts, \tennis, pickle ball, bocce ball, craft fairs and flea markets throughout the summer months. Our weekly (Thursday) little Farmers' Market is a short (2/10 miles) walk as is the beautiful bike path (.39 miles). You are also about one mile from beautiful Harwich Port with shops, galleries, beaches (of course!), restaurants and weekly ''musical strolls'' on Wednesday nights.

We require references. Thanks for looking!

    Couldn't Have Been Better!

When we first stumbled upon this property on We Need a Vacation, it seemed almost too good to be true, but everything was as perfect as it seemed online. Kathy was the most thoughtful, gracious host. She went above and beyond to make our vacation comfortable and memorable.

The communication was easy and quick, and the place looks exactly like it does in the pictures. Kathy gave us clear instructions for getting to the house, and left a helpful collection of notes for us to use. The property is conveniently located to all of the beaches that make the Cape so special. We met friends with children at the bay side beaches in Brewster where we took in some scenic walks, frequented the Nantucket Sound beaches that were a quick bike ride away, and of course we explored the impressive Atlantic National Seashore beaches. We walked to the farmers market, and being just a minute's ride from the Cape Cod Rail Trail, it was nice to have the convenience of bikes at our disposal. The place was absolutely what was promised. The beds were super comfy. The place was very clean and had all of the necessities for our stay.I would absolutely recommend to staying here!

Kathy provided us with all the information we needed and gave us some superb recommendations on where to eat, places to shop and sights to see. The house is perfect! It feels like you're in a real home and not some investment property thanks to all the unique art, interesting books, lush landscaping which makes it all so private. The outdoor shower was so refreshing and nice to quickly rinse off in when we came back from the beach. Be assured that the kitchen that has everything you need. If you like to cook (which I do) this place is for you. Breakfast on the patio was an adventure in birdwatching as I could use my binoculars to study all the beautiful birds.

Kathy's place is a quiet, clean, and calming place. The location is very convenient, near shops, beaches, the library, a market, restaurant, the bike trail, tennis courts, and conservation trails to hike on. We've stayed on Cape Cod for years, and this was a very special place. It was clean, homey, had everything we needed, and was an easy walk/bike ride to most of the things we wanted to do. It is also close to a big supermarket which was handy, and few steps to a restaurant and cafe. There's a lot of interesting history a few hundred feet away, which lent a decidedly un-touristy feeling to everything. Communication with Kathy was great too. We will definitely be looking to stay here again the next time we come to Cape Cod. If you're looking for a quiet place away from all the hubbub and tourists to relax, then this is your place! We would highly recommend this wonderful home.

    Homey Comfort

Kathy's home is charming and comfortable. And full of great books and magazines. You will never be looking for something to read. And of all of the rentals I have ever stayed in, I have never found a better stocked kitchen! So great to be able to make meals without even having to think twice about finding a good or even the right pot or pan or kitchen tool! On top of that, could walk to some nice breakfast spots and the best off leash dog park on the Cape - Thompson's Field - is only a short drive away/ My dog loved all the friends he made there. show more show less

I have lived on the Cape for almost 40 years and this is my first time renting. It is our home, not a rental property and so I am slightly nervous but also excited to share our place. I very much enjoy dogs and birds and spending time with friends and family. I am fascinated by the natural world and have deep respect for this beautiful spit of land that we are so lucky to call home.

What is special about this property?
This house has a warm and welcoming vibe. We've lived here for many decades and have slowly changed the house to bring in some modern conveniences while retaining the quirky, old farmhouse feeling. The original house was ''L'' shaped and over time, a kitchen was added on the back, an enclosed porch was tacked on, and one of the rooms upstairs was given dormers. We gave the bedrooms cathedral ceilings. We spattered paint on some of the floors and refinished others. We pulled out a treacherously steep old staircase and put in an easy, wide one. Some of the windows are very old, some are brand new. I love that the house has never been given a wholesale gutting or makeover. In the spirit of the old timers, who changed what they could when they could afford it, we've slowly and gently transformed the house into something unique and lovely.

What is special about your town?
Harwich was at one time a hidden gem of Cape Cod. It's been discovered now, but despite the increases in tourism and big houses, it still is very much a small town at heart. Harwich Center has many points of interest, and it's just a stone's throw from the house. We especially love the bicycle path and the library, but we also have a great time at concerts in Brooks Park and the Farmer's Market just up the street. Our Historical Society has a charming museum and a barn from the property of world famous bird carver and native son, Elmer Crowell.
