Falmouth is a large town covering 54.4 square miles [Boston is 48 square miles] consisting of 8 villages: Woods Hole, Falmouth Village (including Falmouth Heights), Teaticket, East Falmouth, Waquoit, West Falmouth, North Falmouth and Hatchville. The ocean surrounding Falmouth is generally calmer, warmer and shallower than is the ocean of the lower Cape (Orleans to Provincetown), one side of which faces the open Atlantic. To the south Falmouth is on Vineyard Sound which is protected from the open ocean by Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Monomoy islands. To the west is Buzzards Bay which is surrounded by land on three sides and is even calmer and warmer than Vineyard Sound. Distinctive Falmouth communities along Buzzards Bay (in West and North Falmouth) include Megansett, New Silver Beach, Chappaquoit, Saconesset Hills, Sippewisset and Quissett. Along Vineyard Sound (in Falmouth Village, Teaticket, and East Falmouth) communities include Falmouth Heights, Maravista, Great Harbor, Acapesket, Davisville, Menauhant, and Seacoast Shores. Smalltown is north in the interior of East Falmouth.
The approximately 25 miles of sea shore is interrupted by natural harbors, coves, estuaries, ponds, rivers, creeks and bays. Among the harbors are Megansett harbor, Wild harbor, Silver Beach harbor, West Falmouth harbor, Snug harbor, and Quissett harbor on Buzzards Bay; Great Harbor, Little Harbor and Eel Pond in Woods Hole; and Falmouth Inner Harbor, Great Pond, Green Pond, Eel Pond [another one], Childs River and Waquoit Bay on Vineyard Sound. The 10 beaches staffed and maintained by the town are Megansett Beach, Old Silver Beach, Chapaquoit Beach, Wood Neck Beach and Woods Hole’s Stony Beache on Buzzards Bay; Surf Drive Beach, Falmouth Heights Beach, Bristol Beach and Menauhant Beache on Vineyard Sound. A freshwater beach is at Grews Pond in Goodwill Park. Among the most interesting is Wood Neck Beach in Sippewissett behind which is a spawning ground for many species of fish, crabs, mollusks and other sea creatures including the limulus or horseshoe crab.
Falmouth’s Woods Hole village is a summer retreat for scientists working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) among others. In addition it has a Coast Guard station, Nobska Light House and is the departure point for The Steamship Authority ferries to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. These ferries transport vehicles to the Vineyard. There are also ferries from Falmouth Inner Harbor which accommodate only passengers to Oak Bluffs and Edgartown on the Vineyard (ferries to Nantucket depart both from Hyannis and Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard). Wood’s Hole also has an Aquarium, the Historical Museum, the Children’s School of Science, restaurants, shopping and cultural events.
There’s lots to do in Falmouth from boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking and golfing to theater, museums, fine dining and festivals. Boating ranges from island ferries, to charter fishing boats and sailing school. Fishing, which requires a license, can be in salt or fresh water, deep sea from a boat or off of a bridge or jetty. For biking there is the 10.7 mile Shining Sea Bikeway on an old railroad bed which runs from Woods Hole to North Falmouth. There are many golf courses in the region, some public, including the Falmouth Country Club, Woods Hole Country Club, Balymeade Golf Course, Paul Harney Golf Club and Cape Cod Country Club. Theater includes the Falmouth Theatre Guild and the College Light Opera Company at the Highfield Theater and the Woods Hole Theater Company and the Woods Hole Film festival in Woods Hole. Falmouth also hosts the Cape Symphony, Falmouth Chamber Players and the Falmouth Chorale. Find ice skating at the Falmouth Ice Arena, history at the Falmouth Museums on the Green, gardens at Spohr Gardens, nature at the Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary and Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Special events include road races, 4th of July fireworks and the Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow at Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth. show more show less
