Charming Cottage in the Pines

Wonderful place to stay on the Cape! The location is dandy. We were close to everything we wanted to do on the Cape! From Woods Hole it is only an hour & 20 minutes away. All other Cape destinations were a lot less. The cottage is amazing with its 1950’s appearance both inside & out. Barb & Ed, the owners, keep the cottage immaculate & well stocked with every day items. Picnic on the beach your thing? There are beach chairs & cooler available to use. There are several nice beaches close by. One evening we used the beach chairs in the lower level of the cottage to watch the sunset on First Encounter Beach. On the days the weather was nice, we spent time on the back deck relaxing. A flock of wild turkeys were in our backyard one morning. Lovely to watch! The WiFi worked great in the cottage. There were four of us in our party & we used the upper & lower parts of the house. Both were very comfortable. Leaving the cottage was hard to do! We look forward to coming again to the Cottage in the Pines! show more show less

Charming Cape Cod Cottage!

Our family has had the privilege of renting this charming Cape Cottage for several years for a week in June. The location is in perfect proximity to beaches, bike trails, food, ponds and just about anything that you could need or want, while situated off the main road in a quiet, quintessentially Cape Cod neighborhood. The hosts are wonderful, welcoming and accommodating. The cottage is absolutely spotless when we arrive each year, and is so comfortable and welcoming. An added bonus is that there are two levels, with a private entrance to the lower level, making it perfect for extended family or friends. We thoroughly enjoy our week each year and highly recommend this cottage for your next get away! show more show less

Our Home-Away-From-Home

We have been fortunate enough to spend our last six summer vacations nestled in the walls of the Cottage in the Pines. This rustic vacation rental offered us all the comforts of home; a fully equipped kitchen, a large living room/dining space, two bedrooms on the main floor and an apartment-styled bedroom in the basement with a full bath and living room, which was perfect for our teen companions. The open back porch is perfect for grilling out and enjoying the stars with friends. There is even a comfy hammock tucked between two trees on the back lawn for that late afternoon nap, following a hot day in the Coast Guard Beach sun!

The location of the Cottage is perfect! Being that it is moments away from Rte. 6, it is very peaceful and just a few peddles from the bicycle path. In any direction, one can find a beach to enjoy, or a piece of history in a local windmill or lighthouse. The restaurants offer a variety of menus, from South African to Thai delectables, and, of course, the best seafood around!

For the physically active crowd, there are biking and hiking trails, swimming in the ocean and local freshwater ponds, sailing, kayaking, golfing...the list is endless! And for you fellow shoppers, the Cottage lies in the center of some of the best shopping around, from Chatham to Provincetown! Even the flea market at the Wellfleet Drive-In is an experience not to be missed! For wine lovers, there are the beautiful Truro Vineyards, where you can meander about the grape vines after partaking in an afternoon wine tasting.

To say we are enamored by Cape Cod, starting at the Cottage in the Pines, would be an understatement. Our hosts, Barb and Ed, always made sure that the Cottage was everything we wanted for the week, and more! Don't pass up a chance to experience the Cape from this peaceful corner of heaven!

The Cape as it used to be

Thank you, Barbara and Ed. Sorry it took a few weeks to write this but once back in Manhattan, I had fires to put out at work.

The week in September at the cottage was what the doctor ordered. It was perfect as was the weather. As I stated in your guest book: September in the cottage, with most of the tourists gone, reminded me of the Cape that I knew in the 70's minus the target ship booming of course. This is the second time that we have tried September to avoid the madding crowd and we will probably do so again next year. Thank you both for everything and for allowing me to clear my head for a week in a most pleasant way along with Julia.

I'll keep Ed in mind during this upcoming Army-Navy Game but Army needs a break so I will roar for my Army friends a bit more.

All the best,
John and Julia

Cottage in the Pines

I just returned home from my 8th summer vacation at this lovely cottage. It is in a quiet neighborhood but still close to everything! It has everything that we need for comfort and relaxation. The owners have been very accommodating, always asking for suggestions and inquiring about our needs! It is like returning home each summer!

Cabin in the pines ?? ????

We rented the cabin for the week of the Fourth of July . The home was clean and provided the things we needed for the week. I was very disappointed that the home was advertised as having AC units, and it did not have AC. I contacted the owner and told her we would not have rented had I known there was no air conditioning and questioned why it was advertised as having AC. Barbara told me they had three Dyson fans and that they would cool the home so we would be comfortable. It was unbearable for three of the seven days. We could not use the stove because it would make it even hotter. The home owner called to check if it was cooler in the home and I again told her it was very hot. I suffer from migraines and when it is extremely hot it triggers the headaches and that is why I would have never rented if I would have known it had fans and not AC. If you do not require AC to be comfortable the cabin is nice and it would be great, if you require AC I would not recommend the home. I was very disappointed ?? and I feel like we should have been informed that the home didn't have AC and when we contacted the owner we should have had the opportunity to get a refund to a hotel . I hope the owner will list the home as having fans because if someone has health issues it isn't fair to be miserable on vacation. show more show less

Owner Response:

I am very sorry to learn from this review that our recent guest at Cottage in the Pines did not enjoy their stay 100% because of an unfortunate misunderstanding that the cottage provided air conditioning. We do provide plenty of both fans and heaters for all rooms to accommodate any weather conditions from May-October. In addition, we provide several Dyson air cooling and heating units that are thermostatically controlled to go from 32-99 degrees F. Many of our customers have been so impressed with their performance that they have gone home and purchased them for their own homes. In 20 years of renting, no customer has ever complained of being either too hot or too cold. I have deleted the amenity “air conditioning units” from my listing because I know now that the Dyson fans are air cooling units, not air conditioners.

Due to a cancellation, this recent rental occurred at the last minute and was offered at a special price reduction of 40%. The customer asked if we would install window air conditioners for them. We explained that we had learned from previous investigations it was not possible due to the age and size of the windows. The customer did not make any other requests from us during their stay regarding what she states in her review that she wished we had done; i.e. refund her money, pay for a hotel, etc; nor did she take us up on our offer to buy additional fans.

Customarily, summer cottages on the Cape are not air conditioned due to the period and type of construction when built. Our usual guests come to enjoy the quintessential Cape cottage experience. We strive to provide everything possible that a guest might need or want to have a wonderful, relaxing and memorable vacation. Unfortunately, in this case, the customer was not satisfied and for that I am truly sorry.

I do hope this one experience does not dissuade others from being guests at Cottage in the Pines. We do everything within our abilities to make it a vacation that will bring you back again and again. Come! Get sand in your shoes and enjoy! We look forward to welcoming you.

We had a fabulous time at Cottage in the Pines this year. We played and flew kites at First Encounter Beach, went to P-town, ate lobsters and steamers EVERY DAY! What could be better?! We saw family at our annual cookout at my sisters house next door, and can’t wait until next year!
Thank you, Barbara and Ed for sharing your cottage with our family!
Until next year,

Cottage Guest Book Review...which we treasure. Guests have great fun reading the entries and adding their own . Thus, becoming a part of the cottage’s rich history. The Hager family have been returning guests since 2014

Hiking, biking, kayaking and sailing-one cannot have too much fun on the Cape!
Dear Barbara & Ed,
Another wonderful week at Cottahe in the Pines! It is our “ home away from home.” The minute I walk in th door, an automatic “calm” comes over us. Though it was cool and very damp this week, we are never at a loss for finding fun. We took the sun when it peeked through the clouds, testing the frigid waters at Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Light and Head of the Meadow (a new beach for us.) We enjoyed a game of mini- golf in Orleans, as well as browsing in the numerous, local thrift stores for treasures.
And then there were the culinary treasures that are an absolute MUST on the Cape - Karoo Cafe, Thai food and Arnold’s. Oh! and the BEST breakfast buffet ever - Tony & Laura’s Breakfast Buffet in Wellfleet, just a skip up the road. Wonderful!, Best bagels ever!
Us girls did take advantage of the Wellfleet Cinema during a couple damp evenings; watching two” chick flicks” as Mark would say.
Thank you both for a wonderful week. That was just what the doctor Love, Mark,Karen,Erin’s, Emma & Krystal ( Emma,s Friend.”

Dear Barb & Ed,
Thank you for a lovely time at the cottage! It's so cozy and relaxing - even though it rained all weekend, we were happy to chill out in this quiet place in the trees. The heaters and blankets kept us plenty warm, and the kitchen was perfect for making a lazy Saturday breakfast! What a great way to unwind away from the city. We look forward to coming back! L&A

Dear M&D,
What concierge service! Thank you so much for a wonderful long weekend @ #2 (a.k.a. Cottage in the Pines)! Even though it rained all weekend, we had everything we needed to have a fab weekend - good friends, good food, good drink and a quiet, peaceful scenic location. The rain forced us to be lazy & relaxed and not run around. Just what we all needed
We will definitely be back!!! ( Can you handle it? lol! )
Much love, D, A, &L

I grew up in a family who developed a cottage colony in 1948 called Cedarcrest ,located on the Town Cove in Eastham. My parents standards were extremely high as they felt passionately about how important vacation time was for hard working folks, especially following WWII.
Cleanliness and comfort were of utmost importance. My dad was a taskmaster and we were held to the highest standards to make sure every guest at Cedarcrest had the best possible experience. Cottage in the Pines is revised and updated cottage from the original. It is truly a cottage with a rich history and loved.
One of the important aspects about sharing our cottage is cleanliness. We have been renting for 17 years and have received many compliments about how clean people find the house when they arrive. In fact, we've been called, ''the cleanest cottage in Eastham!''

What is special about this property?
We are so proud of the fascinating and unique history of our charming, authentic Cape Cod family cottage, which was originally part of a popular cottage colony on the Town Cove in Eastham, known as Cedarcrest. Its rich and unusual history was featured in Cape Cod Life Magazine in 2002.

Please come and experience it for yourself, and be sure to leave your own message in the guest book so you, too, will become part of the unique fabric of its story. There is an old Cape Cod saying that says 'if you go home with sand in your shoes, you will surely return.' We hope so!

What is special about your town?
The town of Eastham is quintessential ole' Cape Cod....charming, historic and unspoiled by development. It is the headquarters for the Cape Cod National Seashore which extends from Eastham to Provincetown. In addition to seven pristine Cape Cod Bay beaches and two Ocean Beaches, it houses a Coast Guard Station, Nauset Light, the National Seashore Museum and Headquarters, the School House Museum, Fort Hill Hiking trail overlooking the Town Cove and Nauset Inlet, the Captain Penniman House, Antique Tool Museum and the Oldest Windmill on Cape Cod and the Old Cove Burial Ground where passengers on the Mayflower are buried. It is a small town with a very large and fascinating history. It's convenient location is equidistant to both Hyannis and the whaling and art community of Provincetown. Fishing, sailing, motor boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and sculling abound. Many guided water activities and boating activities can be arranged at Hemmingway Landing near Fort Hill.

In addition to the ''old'' it also houses a brand new, state of the art library, many gift shops and delicious seafood restaurants and the famous Arnold's Clam Shack...not to be missed! Best onion rings, fried clams on Cape Cod! Just ask the Phantom Gourmet who made a recent visit.
